Hello Just another Memorial Day where my Wife and I cried thinking of SGT Derrick. I was his troop in Iraq when he passed, I remember that day like it was yesterday. Just wanted you to know we never forget him, and I still have my bracelet with his name on it and haven't taken it off in 20 years. I also have a tattoo of his dog tags that will be with me forever. He was the best SGT I ever had and I'm still in after 23 years. So that has to say allot.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Andrew J. Derrick US Army Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

After four combat tours, being blown up in Nov 2007, and numerous other dangerous operations, not a day goes by where I don't feel Joseph has been my guardian angel. I love you and miss you buddy, but will never forget you were truly one of my brothers and a great man. I love you and thanks for continuing to serve through me.

THE FIRST DAY I MET SGT DERRICK WAS ON ARRIVAL TO THE 411TH AND HE KEPT A SGT FROM THE INFANTRY NEXT DOOR FROM CHEWING ON ME FOR WALKING ON THE GRASS! HE WAS ALWAYS THERE FOR ME AND A LOT OF US AND EVEN THOUGH WE WERE NOT BEST FRIENDS, HE SHOWED ME THAT IN ORDER TO BE AN NCO YOU HAD TO CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD , CARE FOR YOUR TROOPS AND BE FIRM WITH THEM.I CONTINUE HIS TRAINING STILL AS I AM STILL IN THE RESERVES AND TREATING MY TROOPS LIKE HE TREATED ME FAIRLY AND WITH CARING. I WILL ALWAYS CARRY HIM IN MY HEART AND KNOW THAQT I WILL SEE HIM AGAIN WHEN MY GOD CALLS ME HOME. MANY BLESSINGS AND LOVE TO THE DERRICK FAMILY

Joseph,
It's been 3 years now since you were so suddenly taken away from us. I have missed you every single day since then. You have so many friends who can't wait to gaze upon your face and give you that brotherly embrace that used to put a grin on your face so often. You and I had been tossing around the idea of opening a bar together after we left the Army. Well brother I am proud to tell you that I am still persuing that dream. The only thing that I am missing are the funds. But I am still fighting. The name of the bar will no longer be KRAIZEY JAY'S. In your honor Joseph I will be naming it STUTTERIN' JOE'S!!! Anyone who knows you can easily find the humor in that. I will write you back and let you know how I am coming with the bar. It's a very hard struggle but this is one dream of mine and yours that WILL NOT be wasted!!! I Love and Miss You My Brother!!!!!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joe, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I knew Joseph for about a year and a half before his passing, we were team leaders together in our squad. In that short time though, he truly became one of my best friends. He and I always had a way of getting each other in "trouble" or some other unwanted attention. It was all in good fun of course. I still remember all the good times and always will. Having been right there by his side through alot of good and bad times, I can honestly say that Joseph was a good man and good NCO. I am also glad that I have been able to visit him many times at his final resting place. I am glad to have known him and I will always miss him. Thanks for always being there my friend.

To the family of an American Hero. I am truly greatful. I lost my nephew Spc T Caughman 6/9/04 and know the price that is being paid for our freedom by our loved ones. I along with my sister and her Family attend ed the service of Sgt Derrick and was greatly moved by his faith and his willingness to defend our freedom. Our faith is what gets us through each day, knowing that we will see them again in Heaven. Greater love hath no man than he lay down his life for his friend

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I was SGT Derricks roomate for about a year in Korea at the 2nd MP Company. When I first met him he was (CPL Derrick). CPL Derrick was a person who I looked up to not only as a man, but a leader, a Noncommisioned officer. I was very glad when I got the chance to be his roomate because, I really enjoyed being in his presence. CPL Derrick was such a warm hearted, humorous, loving and care free person. I am so thankful for the blessing I had to be his friend. I really miss him and I wish I could have only had a second chance to say goodbye. I found out of the news today (Oct 28, 2005) from another one of CPL Derricks friends from Korea SGT QUICK. I offer my condulances to the family and his fiance. I will never forget CPL Derrick or the sacrific he made for his country. I miss ya big guy. I hope we can meet again. Love ya.

I'm honored to be among the comrades that Joseph called his close friends. I served with Joseph during OIF1 and OIE 3. Derrick was one of my closest and truest friends. He was the greatest of leaders and someone you could go to when you had a problem and just needed to talk. I know Joseph will be missed by everyone who has ever met him. He had that effect on everybody. You just couldn't say Hello to Joseph and keep walking, something about him just compelled you to talk to him. He was the most selfless and caring person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and my heart goes out to his entire family and friends. God Bless all of you. And Joseph We Will Never Forget You!!!!

Carey, Suzy, William & Elizabeth,

You are in our prayers during this time of loss. I love you all and am always thinking of you.

Joseph was a true hero. I certainly admire the man he was. It takes a special person to accomplish so much at such a young age. May you hold the memories close to your heart, and may they bring you comfort.

God Bless You-

I was extremely honored to have been SGT Derrick's Commander in the 411th MP Company during his first tour in Iraq. He was truly a dedicated Noncomissioned Officer who served with distinction and courage under my command. As a close comrade and friend, I will truly miss him. May God Bless his family and friends and may God Bless the United States of America.

May God bless you in a very special way, as He took a very special person from this world to be with Him. I thank God every day for men like your son who are willing to fight for our freedom and the freedom of oppressed nations. I know Andrew has made a difference in every life he has touched. God bless everyone in his family

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they

protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they

perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus,

our Lord and Savior. Amen.

“I’ll lend you for a little while

A child of mine,” He said.

“For you to love the while he lives

And mourn when he is dead.

It may be six or seven years, or

Twenty two or three,

But will you ’til I call him back,

Take care of him for Me?

He’ll bring his charms to gladden you,

And should his days be brief,

You’ll have his lovely memories

As solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,

Since all from earth return,

But there are lessons taught down there

I want this child to learn.

I’ve looked this wide world over

In my search for teachers true,

And from the throngs that crowd life’s lane

I have selected you.

Now will you give all your love,

Nor think the labor vain,

Nor hate me when I come to call

To take him back again?”

I fancy that I heard them say,

“Dear Lord, Thy will be done.

For all the joy this child shall bring,

The risk of grief we’ll run;

We’ll shelter him with tenderness,

We’ll love him while we may,

And for the happiness we’ve known

Forever grateful stay.

But should the angels call for him,

Much sooner then we’ve planned,

We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes.

And try to understand.” -Edgar Albert Guest
