Bobby Mendez Obituary

MENDEZ, 1st Sgt. Bobby, 38, was killed in Baghdad Thursday, April 27, 2006,while serving with the 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas. Bobby was born September 18, 1967, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Gladys Arce and Amado Mendez. He served in the U.S. Army for 19 years. Bobby married Jennifer October 16, 1989, in Brooklyn, N.Y. After traveling extensively with the Army, including a tour in Desert Storm and Korea, the Mendez family transferred to Fort Huachuca, Ariz., in June 1997 and have established a home in Arizona ever since. While stationed at Fort Huachuca, Bobby was an instructor at the Noncommissioned Officer Academy and was active in the community by coaching Little League baseball and soccer. And, staying true to his roots, he was an avid Yankees and Giants fan. Bobby was assigned to 4th Infantry Division in Fort Hood, Texas, in January 2002 and deployed to Iraq in April 2003. After safely returning to Fort Hood in March 2004, Bobby was again deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in November 2005, and was killed when his convoy intercepted an improvised explosive device (IED). Bobby is survived by his wife of 16 years, Jennifer; three children, Thyiena, 13, Quentin, 12, and Chyanne, 7; parents, Gladys Arce and Amado Mendez; sisters, Ivette and Joan; brothers, Richard (Miriam) and Steven (Theresa); nieces, Melissa, Victoria and Daphne; and nephews, Casey and James. Bobby died doing what he loved. He was a soldier to his core. He served his country with pride and honor and was the personification of the Army core values. Bobby was funny, loyal and extremely intelligent. His family and friends are very proud of him and his service to his country. No one was more professional than 1st Sgt. Mendez. He was and will always be a non-commissioned officer, a leader of soldiers. He had so much life left to live. This is a monumental loss to the family and the U.S. Army, and he will be greatly missed. The viewing will take place 4-7 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2006, at Hatfield Funeral Home, 830 S. Highway 92, Sierra Vista, Ariz. Funeral services will take place at 9 a.m. May 8, 2006, at Main Post Chapel at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. Military honors will follow at Post Cemetery at Fort Huachuca.

Bobby and I served together. I met him in ANCOC in 2000 and again in Tikrit Iraq 2003. We were in the last chalk to come home from Kuwait in 2004. Good NCO, great person, always with a smile and took great care of troops. RIP. CW3 Phelps- NKA Donna Dixon

I will never forget Bobby Mendez. He was a friend and mentor to both my husband and I. I had the pleasure and honor of serving with him in Iraq in 2003-2004. After we redeployed, he kept in contact with me and was always willing to give sound and thoughtful advice. He told me that I was a good NCO and that he believed I could be better and run my own unit one day. He wanted the best for all his Soldiers and any one he met. He always made time to listen and help if needed. He was funny as all get out too...lol. I remember we were playing spades in Iraq one night and a mouse ran past our make-shift table. I jumped up onto a chair because I hate mice and I had never seen Bobby run so fast before. He was out of the room in no time. When he peaked his head back into the room, I asked him if he was afraid of mice and he said that he didn't even see it. He just saw me jump and the other players ran, so he ran. He always made me laugh. I smile just at the memory of what a great man, NCO, and friend he was. To his family and friends, I hope you take extra time to remember Bobby this Memorial Day. Bobby, you could never be forgotten. I cherish the memories of a HERO that paid the ultimate sacrifice. You are missed.

Some of my favorite memories of Iraq- if there were any- were of 1SG Mendez hanging out with us. Our platoon did SIGINT collection missions 24/7 and he always found time to come in and spend time with his soldiers. It was often just small talk but he made us laugh and relax a bit in a place where it was hard to do. I still think about him often. He was truly the best 1SG I had the priveledge of serving with.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Bobby, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

"Rob" was a true hero! He was a leader among men. I served with him in Iraq. I saw his strength, will, and character that led his solders to be the best. He was the glue of his unit, and an example for all to respect and emulate. In combat you see the real character of a person. While I spoke to him nearly daily during the six months we worked together at FOB Kalsu, he left a lasting impression on me that I will never forget. I am proud to have known him even for such a brief time. I wish his family, especially his children all the best in this world. Losing a father, husband, or son is tramatic. I shall miss him. If I can ever help please let me know.

To the family and friends,
I am so so very sorry for you loss. There are no words to express how hard this must be. I wanted to let you know about a memorial I am working on to honor the soldiers from the New York City Area. I am creating a quilt with a panel for each fallen soldier. I am trying to contact the families to invite them to create their loved one's panel. I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To 1SGT Bobby Mendez:
I will never have the honor of meeting you, but I feel as if I know you. You were killed the day before my husband and his gunner, SFC Bryant A. Herlem and SGT Jose Gomez. When I was told of their deaths, I knew in my heart that they would always be linked together, but I did not know that you would be a part of that link. At memorials and on lists, your name stands beside my husband's. On the Central Texas Fallen Soldiers Memorial, the soldiers names are listed alphabetically, rather than chronologically. I found my husband's name but yours was not there as it always was before. I had to search and find yours too. It just did not seem right for you not to be there.

No, I do not know you personally and I never will, but I will always look for you. And I will always remember.

I remember I was new to Fort Hood getting switched to yet another company. Then I found out 1st Sgt Mendez would be my 1st Sgt. I had met him previously from ACE 104 MI BN. I needed to go to court in San Antonio on the first day I was supposed to in-process into Bravo 104 MI BN. He said take care of what you have to and don't even worry about it Shepherd. He then again helped me out in Iraq when I felt no one would. Again he said to me, don't worry I got everything handled. That was the last thing he said to me. He has always been there for his soldiers, worked with us, guided us, and became our friend and role model. Thank you 1sg Mendez.

Michael "Tha Golden Child" Castro

December 1, 2006

I remember the first day I met Bobby, he was an E-7 and new to the 104th MI BN. I was the MITT NCOIC at the time, and he was coming in to replace the ACE NCOIC. He was a genuine NCO and friend, never letting you settle for less than your worth. I was deployed with him into Iraq, and man did we have some fun times in midst of all the bad. I remember getting thrown from a moving Humvee in Tikrit, I was hurt, and confused, and he was there when I regained conscienceness. I'll never forget how much he made fun of me for that. We used to sit in front of Saddam's blown up palaces, puffin on a newport talkin about anything that could take our mind off of being there. Mostly we talked about his children, his wife, and music. He loved his children very much, and you could hear it in his voice. I will remember Bobby Mendez, not because he is no longer with us, but because he is a Hero and a great friend. The world truly suffer a great loss.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Mendez Family.

They will carry on you're legacy in everything they chose to do. Uncle Bobby, you are lost, but most definately never forgotten. We LOVE you so much and will MISS you FOREVER. May you rest in peace.

My name is Christopher Bray I did not know your son,but I'm serving currently in Iraq w/ 4th ID 2bct and still have four months left. I'm with 1-10 cav. and serve as a cavalry scout. It takes a while for me to get newspapers out here and my mother sent me the paper (Bellville Times) and he really seemed like not only a great leader, but a great rounded person and I send my condolences. I stand behind all my fellow NCO's and even though I did not know him personally, there is no doubt I would have had great pleasure in working w/ him. I myself have lost people over here as well it hurts, but knowing your over here protecting and defending freedom for loved ones is a gift in itself. Im form Ft.Hood ,Tx as well and reside out of N.J with both of my parents from Belleville. Again I send my condolences god bless you all.

To the family of 1SG Mendez, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I served with Bobby in Iraq during OIF1 (April 2003-March 2004), and I feel honored to have had such a leader in my chain of command. He was fun to be around, and he would always make us laugh, even in the worst of times. Many of my memories of Bobby are of him and SFC Ed Tower, and they never failed to make all of us laugh. The funniest memory I have of Bobby is when we were all sitting around at work, and SPC Aguilera didn't understand a certain slang word, and nobody had the guts to tell him what it meant. We told Bobby to explain it to him, and when he did, he said it so matter-of-factly that I started choking on my drink and it came shooting out my nose. He was one of the funniest people I ever knew, but he was also one of the greatest leaders I ever had in the Army. He never made us feel like we weren't important if we weren't high up in the ranks, and he was always willing to help us if we had problems. Bobby Mendez will never be forgotten, and will forever be a personal hero to me. To his family, God Bless you and take comfort in knowing that you will all be reunited again one day.

June 16, 2006

I knew Bobby. When he first arrived at 104th MI at FT. Hood TX we clicked right away. I always thought that the two coolest Guys I knew were Bobby Mendez and Ed Tower. Even Though I was a Spc and Later a SGT they never made me feel like I was a lower enlisted Joe. I depoloyed with both Bobby and Ed to Iraq in 2003 and given enough space here I would like to relate one of the many stories Ed, Bobby and I shared. I had just thrown Ed Tower into the lake next to the Place where we were all living at that time, and as I was walking back, I saw Bobby laughing so I went and picked him up to throw him in the lake as well. I knew that I would pay later but it would be worth it. Bobby told me that if I threw him into the lake when he got out he would be forced to beat me half to death. I asked him why and he said that he could not swim. I grew up in Florida so almost everyone I know can swim. Bobby could not. He then went on to tell me that he had tried out for special forces and that as part of that he would have to swim a pool to the end and back with his boots and uniform on. As Bobby could not swim he walked there and back and completed the exercise in the required time. He said as he pulled himself from the pool that there were two guys from special forces laughing at him. He said that believe it or not they had seen that before but that it was the fastest they had ever seen it done. Then they went on to tell him that he would need to learn how to swim if he was going to become part of S.F. He said that he would. Well needless to say as he still could not swim when we were in Iraq, he never went S.F. I believe if memory serves that he and his wife discussed it and they decided not to. Thats How Bobby was, Unwilling to quit even when the task seemed impossible, and loving enough to let his wife take part in important decisions that some would have done without ever giving their loved ones a choice. He is one of the Models I use of how a man should be, And I will miss him.

You kids are your father's legacy. He lives on each and every day inside you. He is a part of every smile, laugh and tear you shed. He will always be with you and will always be a part of you. I know you all will make him very proud.

I would like to first start outt by saying thanks to all the people that have taken the time to come and visit our son-in-law's Guest Book. His loss has affected us all and he will never be forgotten. Rob was more then a son-in-law to us, he more like a son. He was always ther for us when he was needed. He was a good father and a husband. As parents we could not have asked for a better husband for their daughter.

He died doing what he was good at and that was being a 150% Solider. He was always ther for those under him watching and caring for them. He would not have them do anything that he wouldn't do first. I remember his mother telling me, when we were there for the Memorial Service, that he was going to join the Army and make her proud to have a son like him and he kept his promise to the very end.

I met Rob in 1988. I went to high school with his wife, Jennifer. And when I got married, I was glad that my husband and Rob got along so well. Rob was a very unique person. So funny, crazy smart and a lot of fun to be around. He told a story like no one I know. I just can't beleive hs's gone. The one thing that keeps going through my mind is how much more life he had to live. Rob was capable of a great many things. There is no telling what he could have become after his military career. It breaks my heart to think of all the memories he will not make with his children; all their accomplishments that he will not witness firsthand. It is a great loss and I will miss him terribly.

I would like to thank everyone for the stories and comments left. We just got back from Fort Hood where they had a memorial service for 17 soldiers that died within 3 weeks. It was our final good bye.

I have 3 wonderful children that Bobby lives on in. Quentin looks exactly like his daddy. Quentin has a tough road ahead of him, Bobby died on his birthday April 27th.

We would love to hear more stories about Bobby.

To the family of 1SG Bobby Mendez, my prayers and condolences for your loss. 1SG Mendez was my 1SG for 6 short months prior to me changing stations. He was the greatest Noncommissioned Officer and First Sergeant I have ever met. His dedication to the soldiers that served under his leadership is truly a great loss and will be missed. As a man he was exemplary, an excellent role model. He is definitely one of three men I look up to in my life. I did not have the honor to serve on deployment with him, however, when I return, I will carry all I lerned from him with me. I will pass it on to all those who serve under my leadership, and I pray that his hard work and dedication live on in myself and all those he has touched with his life.

So many mixed emotions during a time like this- our loved ones who have passed are truly heroes in every sense of the word, yet it certainly may not ease the pain. I don't know you Bobby, but thank you for the sacrifice that you have made and may God bless your family in their time of grief. You and so many others have made alot of people very proud!

We did not have the privilege of knowing Bobby Mendez. But we are familiar with the great pain and sacrifice that put his name in this book. For each of us, memory reaches unfailingly to bring our loved one back to us, as if it were only a moment ago. Some day it will be, but meanwhile we struggle along, sometimes bravely, sometimes lost. We lost our son and brother Benjamin Schuster, in Ar Ramadi Iraq, on February 25, 2006. We are on your journey. We care how you feel, and we honor your Bobby and his life, as we do our own fallen warrior. Many, many people care, both those who know where to tell you, and those who don't. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you live these unliveable days with us.

To the Mendez Family:

My prayers are with you during this difficult time and will be with you in the days to come. Bobby is a national treasure, as are his fellow warriors; and he decorates our history with his personal sacrifices. While I am saddened by his death, I am honored to be a recipient of the safety and promise he helped to provide our country. Knowing that he gave his time, energy, and talent for our country even before his death, I will remember him and value his good name.

I also extend my sympathy to his fellows-in-arms back in Iraq. I am sure that they miss his smile and his antics, and that they feel his absence sharply .

To the Family of 1st Sgt. Bobby Mendez:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
