Corporal Bixler enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in July of 2003. The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Stephen, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

MAY YOU HAVE A GREAT BIRTHDAY UP IN HEAVEN.
August 17, 2007
There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

"Steve,
We want you to know that we are extremely proud of you, not only as a young man but as a MARINE as well. It takes a special person to fill these shoes and we admire that in you. From the day I brought you to MEPS before going to boot camp, I knew you were the special type of individual. I will never forget the answer to my question I asked you at the hotel... "Are you ready to make this happen?" and you replied with "I am coming back a MARINE!" Steve, we want you to know that you are in our hearts and prayers everyday. Being a military member is not easy but you made it seem that way, just doing what you wanted to be doing and that is highly respectable. You gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country and that says ALOT about you. Just remember this, You are not forgotten and we know you are safe now. Thank you for what you have done and until you stand relieved, You keep those pearly gates safe! SEMPER FIDELIS brother!

Mr. and Mrs. Bixler, On behalf of me and my wife, I want you to know that we are extremely proud of your son. His everyday contributions to the Global War on Terrorism will not be forgotten. “Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

Not a day goes by that I do not think about Steve. I see his face in so many places. He was a great friend and loyal to his work. I will never forget the memories we shared w/ him. He was like a brother. Always joking and laughing when we were together. He did what he wanted to do and always was proud of his accomplishments. He was a real warrior and a true brother to the corps and a real friend to kraig and I. We make many visits to Arlington, just paying our respects and saying hello. What we would do to have him back. We think of your family every day and just know that we are still grieving along w/ many from the loss of Steve. Know he will always be remembered and always loved..

Dearest Stephen, What a month of tears have been shed for Alpha Company. While we were frantically following the outcome of Cory's humvee bombing, which ended hideously with 4 dead and one wounded, we were told at our respective services that yet another young Marine has lost his life to the cause. And that, Stephen, was you, on May 4. We cried once more for another valiant young man who so proudly completed his task even at the broken heart of his own Mother. But we knew the calibre of these young men. We knew the odds goign in that we may not see our sons come out whole in stature, but mighty in spirit, and true to the mission set before them. Honorable, Loyal, Courageous, and Committed Men we have sent to do this Horrendous job. And on queue, each of our Marines completes his role in the roll call. Only this call will be more peaceful, more restful, as our Marine, Stephen hears those words from his Heavenly Father, who has loved him right up unto the Pearly Gates. St. Peter is humbled as Cpl. Bixler enters those gates, and hears with such clarity and splendor, the sounds of the Marine Corps Hymn all 5 verses being sung by choirs of angels for him. So Stephen is being exalted amongt the angels on the most high - singing Glory, glory , glory, glory glory glory, to the hightest. The Lord He called to ask who he cold send, and Bixler answered badk, Lord, Send me. Oh yes, Lord, yes, send me.

Dear Sandra:
When I read the caption under the picture of your family receiving Stephen's flag and saw that he had a twin sister, I wanted to reach out and hug you. My twin brother, Larry, died while serving his country in Viet Nam on January 15, 1966. I have his flag in a case on display in my home. I miss him to this day! You want to share those special events in life with the person whom you have known since the beginning. Please be kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve his loss. It was a great help to me that my family talked about Larry all the time, and we still tell stories about him. I am also painfully aware of your parents' grief, as I watched my parents try to honor Larry's decision to join the army while wishing it had not happened and wondering if it should have happened at all. Life cannot be the same again.

Dear Richard and family,
I was shocked and saddened to read of your son Stephen's death in Iraq. I knew the Bixlers as a kid in Warehouse Point. I was a friend of Richard's sister, Ginny.
How proud you must be of your beloved son and all he accomplished in school and in the military. Our son serves in the Air Force but is not in harm's way yet. Steven will live on in your hearts forever. Please remember me to your mother and sister.

My mother (Susan Reid) was one of Stephen's 7th grade teachers and my father (Gil "Si" Reid) hosted your son at his yearly Marine Recon reunion and remains a great admirer of Stephen and the Bixler family. Your son and I crossed paths a few years ago while I was on the staff at the School of Infantry and he was a student at the Infantry Training Battalion (my mother asked that I look him up); unfortunately, the next time we met again was last Thursday at Arlington.
From all accounts he was exactly what we hope for in our young men: bright, caring, patriotic, and full of promise. I have been most impressed by the demonstrations of respect from the State of Connecticut, the NYPD, the New Jersey State Police, and the many DC-area civilians and service members who joined you on that hallowed ground in Arlington; I hope their actions serve as some indication of how much Stephen meant to the community. To render final honors to your son last Thursday has left a lasting impression on me and I am certain his influence will reverberate among the people of Suffield and beyond for many years to come.
People often say that it is the deceased that "paid the ultimate sacrifice", but I would submit that the family members actually bear this burden. I encourage you to stay close with your Marine family - there's good reason our motto is "Semper fidelis" (always faithful).
Please accept our deepest gratitude for your sacrifice and sincerest condolences for your loss.

To the family of Lance Corporal Stephen Bixler: My husband and I want to offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences in the loss of your son, a young man of exceptional qualities and commitment to his country for one so young. We are the parents of a 21-year-old soldier who is presently serving as an MP on a one-year tour of duty in Iraq, located halfway between Fallujah and Baghdad. When I told him last week about Stephen, we wondered if they had ever met. Our niece and son's girlfriend were classmates of Stephen's at Suffield High and Michael went to their senior prom as well as graduation. He didn’t remember having met him, but he told me that the Marines who have passed through his location in the six months he has been in Iraq, and Stephen very well might have been one of them, are the bravest people he has ever met and that he admires them immensely for their courage. He told me that day that if something happens to him, he hoped to have the honor of being buried in Arlington, too. While there are no words or actions that can adequately express our sympathy or recompense you for the loss of your son, we hope that knowing that there is an extended military family praying for you, and sharing your loss, helps in some way to comfort you in the days ahead. And I would ask anyone reading this to please join us in encouraging everyone to pray for our armed forces and a peaceful resolution to this conflict so that other promising young men and women---who show us what it is to be honorable and courageous---don't have to sacrifice their lives. God Be With You.

Dear Richard, Linda, and Sandra,
Our hearts, prayers, and thoughts go out to you at this moment of great loss to your family. We will always remember your dear son, Stephen, who bravely made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. May his death and the death of all the other soldiers in the Iraq War be not in vain.
When my dear wife, Elizabeth, went on to be with the Lord on April 25, 2000, the only thing I had to hold on to was a verse of Scripture from the New Testament. In Matthew (5:4) Jesus says,
"Blessed are they who Mourn, for they shall be Comforted." Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ has Blessed and Comforted me and my family these past 6 years, and I am confident with Blessed Assurance that He will Bless and Comfort the Bixler Family also.
May Almighty God Bless you, and may His Amazing Grace always shine down on you,

Dear Linda, Richard, Sandra, and Aunt Glor, I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am for the loss of your beloved son, brother, and grandson. It is impossible for me to know the true pain that you are all feeling, although having children Stephen's age I can only imagine. This is a very special family and we will all be here for whatever support you need. I know how proud you were of Stephen, as you should. He is truly a hero, not only to you but to all of us. He accomplished more and touched more lives in his short time here on earth than most people do in a lifetime. His work here may be done, but the Lord above has taken him to do more work in heaven, and I am sure that the Lord has given Stephen his wings to be your angel. He will be looking down at all you and will give you the strength that you need. This tragedy can never take away the wonderful memories and he will live forever in our hearts. All of you will be in our thoughts and prayers. We all owe Stephen a great deal of gratitude for his belief and fight for our freedom. We love you all and will continue to pray for your broken hearts to begin to heal.

Speaking as one of many in Stephen’s Marine Corps family I extend to you my deepest sympathy in the loss of your Son.

Please take comfort in knowing that Stephen’s Marine Corps family will forever hold you and your Son in our thoughts and prayers.

Bixler, Stephen - Corporal/USMC -Recon! Thank you.
When you stopped by our mini-Recon-reunion in 2004, you affirmed our greatest hopes for the future of our "country, our Corps," and our Marine Recon community. We saw in you, a kid more mature than his age, with endless possibilities who could have easily slipped into the relative calm and routine of civilian life after attending your chosen college. You shattered the myth that our youth didn’t care beyond themselves and that the service was only populated by those who weren’t good enough to escape it. Those who do not understand the character-type that embraces selfless values such as honor, courage, and commitment to God, country, Corps, and family will view your choice as misguided but we, the few, know that is not case.
Your wonderful family and some in our great Suffield community helped instill in you a sense of duty and the courage to find out whether your actions were up to the highest expectations you held for yourself. There is no question that you are and lived the moral, high road, life you knew to be the more difficult but the right one . . . you lived "integrity".
At our reunion, Bill Doran, our Iwo Jima survivor, passed the cake and its symbolic meaning of passing on the Corps highest traditions on to younger Marines. You accepted that cake and completed the contract by offering him yours symbolic of your commitment to hold on to those traditons and to be worthy of the title, United States Marine.
MARINE, you have more fulfilled your promise. We commit to keep you in our hearts and your family in our arms and prayers.
Steve you are relieved of your earthly post. As you guard heaven's shores, be assured we remaining Marines will love, honor, respect, and do whatever it takes to watch out for your family a friends until we receive the duty assignment to take the next watch with you.
Semper Fi and Recon!
Si (Gil) Reid, Sgt. USMC/Recon -NOLOAD (West Suffield)
Please note the following Recon Marines asked me to express their condolences and to present a final salute to you and your family:
Johnson, Lloyd (NH) 3rdFR Co; Carney, James (CT), 1stFR Co; McKee, James (MA) 1st and 5th FR Co; Dunn, John (CT) Bravo Co/3rd RCN Bn; Crawford, Jack (PA) Bravo Co/3rd RCN Bn; Dion, Al and 50 others 2nd RCN Bn Marines who will be toasting you at the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion reunion this weekend at Camp Lejuene; and Col. Lane, Skip (RVN chopper pilot for recon inserts and extracts).
Salute: “Here’s to you and to our Corps.”

To The Bixler Family:
There is not a greater heartbreak other than losing a family member. We both grew up in Suffield and can appreciate the closeness of the Marine Family; it is forever. Walter enlisted right after high school, his father served several years as a drill instructor at the "Island" during the same time frame and finally later retired after 20 something years! Last but not least, Walter's nephew just last week was put on a bus for you guessed it, basic/bootcamp, "Island" side. Three generations of Marine guys convince me to believe that there is a strong belief in God, integrity, and our great country. Our deepest sympathies and prayers of strength are with you...

We will remember Steve and all of the men and women who sacrifice to keep us free.
You have a beautiful family. We are proud to be your friends.
