October 19, 2016

Hi Ryan, this is Carla Peltier, Dustin's mom. Although I never met you I feel connected to you through Dustin. I remember when you and Dustin were both still at Camp Horno I was talking to Dustin on the phone when you walked in to the room. Dustin told you he was talking to me then I heard you in the background saying, "Hi mom!" Dustin never got over losing you. I have come to learn that he thought he could have saved you had he been with you that day. And now my Dustin has joined you in Heaven. We miss him so much. One day when I was missing Dustin I thought of you and I told my husband I hoped that you and Dustin were hanging out together in Heaven. Probably still protecting us. Later that day while sitting in our vehicle two little birds flew over. One little bird perched itself on the side mirror while the other little bird hovered and pecked at the window where I was sitting. This little bird kept looking at me eye to eye. Finally the little bird perched on the mirror began to fly away and the other little bird looking at me pecked the window again and followed shortly after. My husband, our grand daughter and myself were all pretty amazed at what we just saw. We were all convinced that you and Dustin had just paid us a little visit. Thanks for letting us know you are both ok. Thanks for your ultimate sacrifice for us and this great country. Thanks for being such a good friend to my son. Sending you lots of love and prayers from your Peltier family. I know this might be a bit much to ask but could you give Dustin a hug and kiss from me? And tell him I love him so very very much. Thanks Ryan.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Cummings Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Ryan,

Just wanted to drop by and talk. Me and casey are always talking about you. And how our higher-ups always got us confused. Those were great times along with many others which will never be forgot. I still remember talking to you for like two hours before you went back out to the field after Posivio and Freunds memorial. It was the next day when you got hit. I'm glad I got to spend all that time with you the day before. Seems like 5 minutes ago bro. Not a day goes by.

Dear family of Cpl. Ryan J. Cummings,

We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.

Very Sincerely

Frank G. Noyes

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ryan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

And I remember how none of our higher-ups could tell the difference between me and you, and we'd switch our cammy tops and no one noticed. I still think about you and everyone else all of the time. I've been doing good. Workin' as a 911 dispatcher here in Kansas for about a year now. And Cara is gettin big. Turns 5 in September and starts kindergarten this Fall. Time just keeps flying by.

I first met Ryan before we enlisted for about a year. In July 2002 we went to boot camp together, and followed to Bravo 1/1. He went to second plt, I went to first. Through 3 tours we were together. I was on your last convoy. Coming back from Posivios memorial, I got dropped off at my patrol base. 15 minutes later, I heard the explosion. Listening on the radio, completey helpless feeling. I started school a little bit ago. I visit you and Phil often, but you know that. We'll all remember you, always.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I served with Cummings for the last two years of my enlistment. We were quick to become friends. We partied in singapore, hung around Camp "Lemonade" in Djibouti Africa, and lifted weights together on ship to pass the time. I have so many memories of him and and I that it crushed me to hear of his death this summer. He is with God now and we will all see him again when our time comes. God Bless you Ryan.

I was in B 1/1 1st PLT. Sadly, I just heard about this like not even two weeks ago. I just found this guestbook online. I knew Cpl Cummings and his fireteam leader Lcpl Jason Bryant. Jason and I stay in contact all the time and Jason is the one who told me what had happened. He found out from another guy that was in his fireteam at the time. I also found out my guy, Lcpl Robert Posivio was also killed around the time Cpl Cummings was killed. I wish I didn't get out now. I'm sorry for your loss and just know Cpl Cummings he was brave for what he did and was extremely dedicated to his duty. I'll let Jason know about this guestbook so he too can sign it. I will be going back into the military in about two months, this time with the army. I'm looking forward to seeing Iraq again.

Cpl. Cummings was an outstanding Marine and a great human being. He needs to be recognized for the fact that he volunteered for a 3rd deployment to Iraq. His heroic actions and performance under fire prove that he was as great of Warrior as any Marine to ever live.

My dad was in the US Navy and battled against Japan. He never liked talking about it,but I remember calling him a hero, and he would reply quickly,"heros don't come home".Ryan is a hero and My family thanks God for people like him who were not trying to be heros, but serving the country that they knew was a blessig from God and was well worth protecting. The heros do go home,to God's home. Thanks Ryan ! Thanks to his family, and to his Mom,I couldn't fathom loosing my son,but what an honerable way to go,to know that your Mom stands for the love that you gave all for.

Heroes like Cpl. Ryan Cummings built and protect the freedoms of this country. I know simple words cannot make up for the loss of your son. But know that my family sincerely appriciates the sacrifices Ryan made. My own son, my first child, is only 4 months old. But he is allowed to grow up in a land of safty and freedom which your son has provided. Know that I will raise my son, and tell him of Ryan's sacrifice. The battles he fought overseas keep the fight away from our own shores. And his courageous acts promote freedom and give hope to those who are in desparate need. May God bless you and your family.

Robert Wright

God bless you and all people like you. To your legacy and progeny we all owe our freedom. Most of us cannot pay the price which is asked. Those who can pay and always do are the most beautiful examples of true persons. How terrible life would be for many millions if it were not for their selflessness. He looked from his picture to be a fine young man. I hope all of my three sons grow up to have some measure of his courage and sense of duty. I have shed tears for you.

I happened to see your gravesite at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery upon recently visiting my father's grave, a World War II veteran who served in the Navy. Your grave was just a few feet from my dad's and when I saw how young you were (22) and how you were killed in action in Iraq, I was immediately astonished and moved. I don't even know you or your family but seeing your tombstone set off something in me that compelled me to pay my respects to you. Thank you, young man, for your courage and bravery and for making the supreme sacrifice. I hope that you are at peace now and looking down upon this entry from heaven. May God be with your family.

I just heard about all of this, I was in the DEP with Ryan we left for bootcamp just a couple months apart he was always so motivated. But we all enlist willing to give our lives for our country. And I am so proud of him, he died doing what he believed in. There are no better people in this world than those who are willing to give their lives for everyone else. We have our memories and they will always live on. Semper Fi Ryan.

Dear Cummings Family,

Even though we have never met I feel as if we are part of a "family". My daughter's fiancee was killed by an IED in Iraq on Oct. 3, 2005. It is my prayer that you will feel God holding you as close to His heart as he has held my family these past months. May you know His comfort and peace as you face the difficult days ahead.

In God's Grace,

God bless Ryan and his family and friends. I met some of Ryan's fellow Marines recently and from them I learned what an outstanding human being he was. Sometimes your learn the most about someone from those who love him. I truly believe that. This 4th of July I will be sure to raise a toast to Ryan and the others who have served and are currently serving our country. God bless all of them. You are all in our hearts and our prayers. I thank you.

Ryan this is still so unreal to me. I always heard of so many people dying over in Iraq, but never thought that someone I knew (especially my cousin) would be killed there. I just want you to know that I AM SO PROUD OF YOU and how you gave the ultimate sacrifice not only for your country, but people you didn't even know because it is what you believed was the right thing to do. There will not be a day that goes by without me thinking of you and the good times we shared together.

You are my true hero Ryan..I LOVE YOU!

Love your cousin,

Thank you, Ryan, for serving your country so proudly, for giving of yourself so that the rest of us can live freely. I am so grateful to be an American citizen.

Ryan's family: I am sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how hard this is for you but I can wonder the sense of pride you must feel having a son/brother/nephew/friend to give his life for others.

Please know a nation grieves with you. A tear is shed, a head bowed, a sense of humbleness overcomes me with I think of the sacrifice you all have made, especially Ryan.

Thank you and God bless you all. May Ryan rest in eternal peace.

To the Cummings family:

I just learned of your Marine's passing via the message board outside HEHS. My deepest, sincerest sympathies. Having a son who served in the Marines (FAST and then the 3/8) with a tour in Iraq, I not only share your grief but also your pride. As the boys learned in boot camp, once a Marine, always a Marine. Ryan is truly one of the Few, the Proud, and always a Marine. Prayers for His peace and comfort in the days and months coming.

I was an embedded journalist with B 1/1 and left the unit just days before this happened. I can reassure Ryan's family and friends that he was among friends at the IP station. The squad bay was always someplace where funny things were going to be done and said.

But when Ryan and his fellow Marines went out into Karmah, they were consumate professionals and fearless warriors. Being the gunner on the Gunny's vehicle was an important job, and Ryan took it seriously.

I have talked to a couple of Ryan's friends when I saw them in Fallujah and I know they are saddened by his passing, as I am. I pray for the family and hope they can find peace.

I have some photos of the squad as they prepared to go out on patrol from around the end of May and can forward them to Ryan's family to see if they can see him in the photos.

Dear Cummings family,

I talked with Ryans mom shortly at the dinner. I remember Ryan as a out going, generous guy. We use to hangout before school in Jr High and High school, your son road me on the pegs of his bike more than once. Brandon Smith, I (Rob Giner) all use to hangout, those were great times and as upset and tearful as I was at the funeral, I choose to remember the good times and smiles Ryan use to beam at us. I hate to loose a friend, but I can only imagine and pretend to feel what it feels like to loose a son, I wish the family the best of luck and I hope your ok. As for Ryans fiance, her final statement at the funeral really tore me up because she was right, Ryan does deserve a round of a applause... *clap for Ryan* He was a great guy, I will always Remember him. Thank you for serving and protecting me, not only that.. also having a heart to help other peoples lives which whom didn't even live in your own country.. You rock Ryan!

It was a great pleasure to get to know your son the way I did. He was one of the most understanding and forgiving men I've ever met. He wanted to serve his country more than anyone. Tonight I went to the wake for Cpl Ryan Cummings. After meeting his Mom, Dad, Stepmom and Grandparents, I am not surprised at what a wonderful young man and Marine; Ryan was. To his family I want you to know the grace you demonstrated will stay with me always. As I watched the slide show of Ryan, I just wanted to know more about him. What a beautiful young man. What a loving family, especially his siblings. My son Jeremy (Cpl USMC) is currently in Iraq with 1 MEF. We will not forget Ryan, we will keep his picture and remember his family. I am a grateful citizen who knows that you will miss Ryan so much and will have many sad days to come. I will pray for your family and the families of the fallen who have gone before. I again say that I am a grateful citizen.
