In Memory of Michael Joseph ~ (Debra Estep)

June 26, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto Michael, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I had the privilage of serving with Mike in our first Iraq deployment, and then in Germany. He was the epitome of what a SOLDIER is. I got to watch him "grow up" in his career from the day he met up with us in Iraq until the day I left the unit. I am honored to say that I served with Mike and can truly say that he will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

Miss you everyday buddy, I will never forget the times in Germany with Robo, Jones, Goodman and the rest of the guys. You will forever remain a hero and a friend.

my hearts and prayers are wtih this family from canton where rather you leave you still belong to the canton family

August 15, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I am honored to have known Michael. He was my best and brightest soldier. There was never a time when I couldn't count on him getting the job done. He was one of those guys that rarely comes along. Selfless to his core all the way to the very last day. I was with him that tragic day and will live with those thoughts the rest of my life but, I wouldn't change a second of the time I got to spend with him. He made us all better people and better leaders. I know that even in the afterlife he is still touching our hearts and making us better. To Ms. Potocki I can only thank you for raising such a wonderful son and am so proud to have had the pleasure to serve with him by my side and honored to have known such a special guy. Mike you will forever be in our hearts and minds and will always be a Raider!!

I met michael potocki in patterson. I joined the army just a few months before he did. he was a really nice person. After I left baltimore I never heard from him again until now. It is really sad that this had to happen. I was looking forward to going back to baltimore and talking to guys like potocki, that had graduated with me and that had been in danger zones and away from their family. A lot of people asked me how I dealt with those situations and I always responded, I dont feel liek talking about it. One of the few people that I would have felt confortable talking about it with was mike.to his family I wish them the best of luck, be strong, always remember mike, he was a great person and he died doing what he liked.

Dear Potocki Family, I must begin by expressing my sorrow for the loss of Mike. Though the validity of our sending our young men and women in harm's way will always remain questionable in my mind, they should all holds their heads high and be proud that they are doing their very best. My family has been watching the war carefully as my brother Brian is a MSG. in the Air Force and serves as crew chief on C5s. The Potocki name caught our eyes as we are related. Mike's great grandfather, Leo, was my mother's mother's brother. I don't know if the name Janowiak means anything to you, but that is where the Potocki name was married. Please be assured that I, and my family will keep you all in our prayers.

July 10, 2006

Wow...I don't know what to say...But I want to say something...so here goes...I didn't know Mike very well. He was my boyfriend's little brother's best friend. I had not seen or heard about him in about 6 or 7 years...until last week. When I heard about this tragedy...it only took me a minute or two to know exactly who they were talking about. Mike was an awesome kid. When I first heard about someone I actually knew being killed in Iraq, I didn't know what to say. It wasn't like it was my brother or even someone that I was really close to. But the more I thought about it, the more I remembered about him. Some of my favorite inside jokes involved him...jokes that lasted years after I had last seen him. He was a cool kid...someone I would want (and can see) my kid being like. I don't know if the pain I feel is because my imagination keeps putting my 7 year old son in his position...or that he was just an awesome person that made an impression on me... but of the thousands of people I have met and interacted with...at any level - big or small - he will be one of those few people that will make a HUGE impact on my life. As I raise my son, I will talk about Mike to teach Alex what a truly good person does in spite of themself...how some of the most honorable people, like Mike, will sacrifice themself for others. I just hope he can be half as good of a person as Mike was. I know his spirit will live eternally in his family's lives...but I promise to you, his family and friends, that he will not be forgotten by many, many others. My tears and prayers are with you...

Dear Potocki Family,

I regret that I had only met Michael once, but feel as though I knew him through his mother Debbie, when I worked at Rapscallions. Michael’s picture, in full uniform, was placed proudly on the wall for everyone in the small Canton neighborhood to see. I recall about once a week we would get updates on Michael from Debbie on how he was doing and how often he would call or mail letters. Debbie was comforted by co-workers who collected provisions to send over to Iraq for Michael and his fellow soldiers.

We were all so proud of his service. I have to say that when I finally did meet Michael he was everything she described as well as everyone else's description of him. I’m so sorry for your loss. We are all blessed to have been in his presence, however briefly.

Dear Debbie,Kevin,& the whole clan,

Things happen for a reason we may never understand,

Like the passing of a soldier in a hot foreign land.

A soldier knows his time may be short and sweet,

He has a hard job to do and he can't be weak.

He trusts his family to be as strong as he must be,

To take care of each other while he keeps our land free.

He knows he may die even so far away from home,

And prays his family will know he does not pass alone.

For all his other sisters and brothers in uniform everywhere,

Will understand his life, his sacrifice, will mourn, will care.

God gave us this child Mikey's life to help teach us to love,

And God took him back as a soldier to His kingdom above.

May the peace which passeth all understanding abide with you forever,

Love and faith is what holds a soldier's family together.

Ms. Debbie (and Kevin), I wanted to offer my deepest sympathies for your loss. I cannot imagine what you are going through. I first learned of Michael in the newspaper and realized we are neighbors. (I live at 8037 E. Baltimore Street.) Then I heard his name again at my job. I work with the MD National Guard Honor Guard and I helped coordinate the bugler for Michael's service. I just want to let you know that if you need anything, anything at all, I'm just up the street and would be glad to help you in anyway possible. Please do not hesitate to ask for a shoulder to lean on. I would be honored to help. God Bless you and your family.

Debbie and Kevin, Sometimes it is the innocence of little children that puts things in perspective...last night as Brandon and I were doing our prayers and our "gratitude for the day", his gratitude was "I'm grateful Miss Debbie's son is now at peace". May God hold you in your time of grief, and know that Michael is with you always.

I never met Michael but am friends with his aunt and uncle (Sue and Dave Harris); Debbie, Kevin and the entire family please accept my sincere sympathy in your great loss. Know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers. He is a true example of what is good and brave in our land. And it is because of him (and those like him) that we are free. I thank you all for raising such an incredible man.

I am so sorry to hear about Mikey. I knew him from Mervo and we used to hang out in the halls together. Mr. Woe one of the staff at Mervo let us help him with work here and there and me and mike used to have so much fun. He was so funny and personable. He had the best smile. We used to always have the same lunch schedule and hung out outside. I will miss him dearly and always keep him in my prayers as well. From what Mike used to tell me he always looked out for his mom and brother and even today he is sitting on your shoulders doing what he always promised he would do... Take care of the both of you.

To the family of PFC. Michael J. Potocki,

Our family would like to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of your son. We didn't know Mike, but our son Spc. Shaun Hill served with Mike in Germany and then in Iraq. Then became very good friends and did everything together in Germany and Iraq. Shaun was working with Mike when he got injured. I promised Shaun to try and get ahold of Mike's family.

When ever Shaun got a package, here came Mike to see what they could share, Shaun thought that was so funny!

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Potocki Family,

I had the privilege of teaching Michael in middle school and remember him as a funny, spirited, and determined young man who made friends wherever he lighted. When I read about his sacrifice, I poured over pictures from class activities and field trips and found Mike sporting that bowl haircut! The pictures reminded me how much he enjoyed life and contributed to my small world. It doesn't surprise me one bit that he decided to dedicate his life to the protect the lives of others. Please know that your loss is felt by so many people -- those who knew him as well as though understand how right it is to honor his memory. He made an impression on me that has lasted over the course of many years and among hundreds of children. He will be missed. God bless you all.

My son was stationed with Michael. When he called me and told me they had lost one of their own it seemed to make the War that much closer. I can only imagine what the family is going through. I hope they know that our prayers are with them. I did not realize how difficult it would be to here of other soldiers but every time I hear of another soldier dying my heart just brakes. Even though it is not my son I know that some where a mother is getting the news. I pray that through this the family will know that we are people of faith and hope and may God give them the strength and courage to get through this.

"I NEVER KNEW WHAT WAR WAS"

I never knew what war was. Oh, I knew the concept of it and all that it entailed, but I never really understood it or felt it's impact.

When I was twelve years old everyone in the neighborhood was talking about a kid on the next street that got blown up in Viet Nam. I remember how sad everyone was when they talked of it, but it didn't mean much to me. The kid was seven or eight years older than me, so I barely knew him, and I didn't know where or what Viet Nam was. My world was limited to places like Green Bay and New York. Places where the Colts and Orioles played games. As I got older my only experience with war was at the movies, where no matter who got killed, they would show up again in another film next month. Then came 9/11 and the action in the Middle East. Scarcely a day went by without hearing of soldiers being killed in this latest war, but no matter how close to home it hit, it was still just something I saw on tv, or read in the paper. It was easy to just turn the page or change the channel.

For me, June 26th changed all that forever. At last I got to see what war really was. I got to see the pain, sorrow, and sadness in people's faces. And I saw it in my own face. Now I know what war is. I know how it affects people. I know how it feels to lose someone you care for, be it a relative or just a friend. I understand it now, and I abhor it. My only wish is that I could go back to being twelve years old again. Back to when I was innocent and naive, and didn't know what war was.

God bless little Mikey.

God help us all.

To the family friends and loved ones of PFC Michael J. Potocki,

I am truly sorry for your loss. I have never met your son but I have taken the time to read the entries in this website. It is obvious from the impact he has had on others during his life that you raised a fine Man. Someone who thinks of others first. Someone I would have been honored to serve beside. The kind of Soldier that makes me proud to have served in the Military for 15 years. The kind of Soldier I hope others see in me. If I had a son, the kind of Soldier and the kind of Man I hope he would be.
