September 2, 2021
Today is 15 years since we last served together and this morning I was blessed to do PT with the men of 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Red Falcons.
We spoke about Bravery, Courage, Leadership, Teamwork, Love, Resilience, Service and the actions that took place 15 years ago. We spoke of the men who gave their lives for our freedom. In doing so we had to look no further than Sergeant Ralph Porras.
Your history will live on forever and you will not be forgotten.

Ralph,
Today marks 15 years since we last shared a smile. There is not a day, week or month which goes by that I don´t think about you and the events of September 2, 2006. I have spent numerous hours thinking of what I could have, should have and would have done differently. I have lived with the pain of survivors´ guilt ....and many times the thought of trading places with you has come through my mind. It was a pleasure and an honor to have been your platoon leader, team mate and friend. We had some great times at Bragg and while deployed to Afghanistan. I rarely use the word "Warrior" or "Hero", yet you are the epitome of both.
When I think of you so many images go through my mind. The image that keeps repeating is of your smile. It seems to defy physics how a heart as big as yours could fit inside your body.
There is so much more I would love to say but the tears and the words are not passing through my lips and fingers ...because the pain in my throat and chest are too immense.
You will never be forgotten. Your spirit and your action in battle will be talked about as long as I live. I will ensure that my children and grandchildren know what a great father, husband, team mate and soldier you were.
I love you My Brother.
I love you.

When the guys you grew up with get together from time to time and talk about the old days, you're still included (how could you not be). So proud to read how you've had such a positive impact on others in your soldier life like you did us in your civilian life growing up.
Never forgotten Ralphy.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Porras Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Ralph N. Porras US Army Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

I clearly remember meeting Ralph in Baghdad 2003 during the first deployment for both of us. Ralph made a strong impression on me though we only spoke briefly. We bonded because we both had quit our civilian careers at an older age to join up after 9/11. What really impressed me was that after 9/11, Ralph had originally planned to go to Afghanistan on his own dime as a civilian to join up with Afghans opposing those who attacked America. I was told his battle buddies were very upset at the loss of him and his fellow Soldier when they passed away. Ralph was a selfless, dedicated man and his actions, not words, demonstrated he was the finest example of an American Patriot.

Ralph,
I didn't realize you were fallen until our high school twenty year reunion. I think of you often and remember what an inspiration you were to so many. Everyone was drawn to your energy. Even though we were serving in the same Army, we never talked about our service. I wish I had known you were in. It was chaos those early GWOT years. I am still serving 19 years later. God bless you my friend. You will never be forgotten. I have told many a Soldier and my sons about you and will continue throughout the days of my life on earth. Godspeed...LTC D.GREEN

All I have are memories and a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keep sake, from which I will never part. God has you in his arms, I have you in my heart.

Unfortunately I only knew Ralph for roughly three months. I was newly attached to support D CO. I didn't know anybody and Ralph took it upon himself to integrate me into things and make me feel comfortable. We talked a lot during the long missions in Yusufiyah and elsewhere during those months. I thank him for that and wish I could do more to honor him. I think about him quite a bit and wish he knew how much I appreciate what he did for me.

Ralph,
I remember the first day I showed up to D Co. and had no idea what I was doing as a brand new Soldier. You were the first to friend me and the first to help me. There's not a week that goes by that I don't think of you and who you were to me and our brothers. I remember watching you jump out of a truck in Afghanistan and racing into the woods after the man you thought tried blowing our truck up. I remember the long conversations we had in the guard towers at night and the dreams and goals we talked about accomplishing. Ralph, I'm now an Infantry Captain about to take command in the 173rd and to some degree you helped set an example and influence me to follow my dreams. I miss you and honor you and your family for your sacrifices. With love. Josh

To the family of Sgt. Porras,
Your sacrifice, and that of your son, can never be repaid. I, too have a son and a daughter-in-law serving in the military. It is an exceptional individual who can step forward and put their country and all that it stands for ahead of their own lives. I thank God for each and every one of them. They are the reason we have this way of life.
Thank you

Ralphy-I can't believe it's been 3 yrs already. I remember the call from my sister telling me what happened. I cried almost all day as I packed to goto Ft. Sill to see my son, John, graduate from Basic Training. I remember the 1st time Aunt Bev & Uncle Dave seen him- they held on so tight to him and cried more than I had ever seen them cry, ever. I remember Uncle Dave sitting in the chair crying when John was getting ready to goto S. Korea. Now, I get ready to deploy that same son to Iraq. I will live day to day knowing that, even though you didn't know my John, you will be watching over him.

Hello,
First, I want to thank Ralph for making the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I didn't know him, but I do know one of his close friends from Iraq, Capt. Ivan Castro. Ivan was severely injured and rendered blind in the tragic event that took Ralph's life. Ivan wears a bracelet with Ralph's name on it to honor his friend. I am trying to contact Ralph's wife Christine, I believe, to ask her some questions and get permission to honor Ralph in a special way. If anyone can please forward her contact information it would be greatly appreciated. Send any info to [email protected]

In Memory of Ralph ~ (Debra Estep)
September 2, 2008
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Ralph, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To a great friend and a very wonderful person. We had alot of good times together and did some pretty wild things but Ralph was a very nice individual who always made a bad day a wonderful one with his presence and up beat personality. He will be missed by many. Ralph gave his life for a good cause because this war is making this world a much safer place. He gave his life and that takes alot of courage to fight for the freedom we often take for granted. My prayers go out to his family and the ones that were closest to him. God Bless him and one day we will meet again. Love ya buddy and you will be missed by myself and many others.

To the Family of Sgt. Porras,
Condolences on your tremendous loss.
Like Ralph, I joined the Army after September 11 as an "older" soldier. We met during his first deployment to Iraq with D Co. but really got to know each other back at Ft. Bragg. No situation could bring him down. There were many times when hours were long and morale waned but Ralph always helped everyone around him get through it. "Cannot" is a word that Sgt. Porras did not know the meaning of. He was a genuinely nice guy with integrity and compassion for his fellow soldiers. Our prayers are with you and I am sure that Ralph is smiling down on all of us right now.

It struck me very hard when I found out about Ralph’s death. I had to take couple of days to put my self back together to be able to write this.
I had the honor to know Ralph back in the 90’s and I can describe him as a person who stood for honesty, integrity and perseverance. I always enjoy his cheerful company it was fun to have him around. I’m glad I have met him in this lifetime. His indomitable worrier spirit will live among us forever.

You died defending your country and doing what you always wanted to do.You were a brave man and a cherished friend.

To the Family of Sgt. Ralph N. Porras:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.

Christine Porras and family:
Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time. Our 21 year old son, Justin W. Dreese, died along with your beloved husband, Ralph, during that fateful mission in Yusifyah. The grief is overbearing and they tell us time will heal. We have lost two tremendous men who were the bravest. May God be with you.

Dear Tom,
I just learned of your brother's passing late last night and am deeply saddened and shocked by the news. My heart goes out to you and your family during this very difficult time. I can remember back to when we were teen-agers what charisma he had, and how his smile lit up an entire room. I am sure he will be greatly missed by so many people. What a true hero! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I remember Ralphy as a kid. We played together at Aunt Bev & Uncle Dave's house, and at his Grandma & Grandpa Kowalski's- for some reason I keep remembering Ralphy & Davey chasing me and the other kids- really for no reason- just to play. I also remember how cute we look in the picture from Aunt Bev & Uncle Dave's wedding! As we grew, we really didn't see each other- but I remember seeing him again, at Aunt Bev & Uncle Dave's house, probably in the mid 90's. I met his wife and son and thought how "like father like son" held true. We were out back sitting, watching all the kids chase each other-for no reason- and laughed when his son and my son started chasing each other around. We just kinda looked at each other and remembered when it was us. My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone that fortunate to know Ralph. I know he turned out to be a great husband, father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, soldier, man; but to me he'll always be the little Ralphy that chased me around the yard.

Chrissy - I learned of the loss of your husband from my mom, Beth Bell and was immediately saddened by the news. Your husband is a true hero in every sense of the word. I thank God regularly for the men and women in our military and pray for their safety as they work to defend the freedoms we Americans enjoy on a daily basis and sometimes take for granted. I am hopeful that your memories of happier times and knowing that you have the love and support of many others will sustain and comfort you during this time. You will be in my thoughts and prayers and I wish God's peace to you and your son.

Christine,
Words can not express the sorrow and shock I felt when I heard of Ralph's untimely passing. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
I know that Ralph always wanted to be in the service and when I was home on leave he would always talk about it- always after talking about his family. He is a great man and I will always remember him with as a caring man with a smile and spoke well of everybody he knew. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

To Christine, Storm, Marilyn, Tom and Annie: Words could never express the loss we all feel. Ralph was one of the most amazing men GOD placed on earth. He was a leader as we all grew up together and demonstrated that up until the end. The special bond that Ralph had with us will be kept close to my heart always. All the hugs and prayers to your family from ours. With love, Derek, Amy, Storm, Chase and Arabela Gale

I went to Swan Valley with Ralph and he was the best guy there. Even after he left Swan Valley when I would run into him at the store he would always stop and say hi and chat for a minute. May god bless you and your family. He was brought up to be a wonderful man, his parents did a wondrful job rasing him.. He is very special.
