SFC Scott Nisely, 48, Marshalltown, Iowa, was killed in action near Al Asad, Iraq, on Saturday, September 30, 2006. Served: United States Army, United States Marines.

Born July 5, 1958, in Nebraska City, he was one of four children born to J.C. and Norma Jean (Gore) Nisely. He was raised in Syracuse and graduated from high school there in 1976. He attended Doane College in Crete on a track and cross country scholarship and received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology. While at Doane College, he met his future wife, Geri Cecetka. The two were united in marriage on April 17, 1982, in Omaha. Since Scott was enlisted in the United States Marines Reserves while in college and entered the Officers Commission in May of 1981, the couple resided in many communities including Kaneohe Bay MCAS, Hawaii, Quantico, Va., Camp Lejuene, N.C., and Des Moines, where he was last stationed as active duty Marines Major and then reservist. Scott was a member of the First Baptist Church, played drums in the music ministry, Shaw Tae Kwan Do in Marshalltown, collected GI Joes and trained at the YMCA. He will be fondly remembered for his patriotism, love of family, living and breathing the military, his sense of humor and jokes, positive attitude and compassion. He will be greatly missed by many and his memory treasured by those he protected.

Left to honor his memory are: his loving wife Geri; daughter, son-in-law, Sarah and Nate Swinton, Ames, Iowa; son, daughter-in-law, Justin and Andrea Nisely, Greeley, Colo., parents, J.C. and Norma Jean Nisely, Syracuse; brothers, sisters-in-law, Jay "Skeet" and Vicki Nisely, Lincoln, Pat and Ellen Nisely, Lincoln, Bob and Marlene Nisely, Denver; nephews, spouses, Jason and Audra, Brandon and Mandy; his wife's relation, cousins and a host of friends and comrades. In death he has rejoined his grandparents.

Funeral services and a celebration of Scott's life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Marshalltown, with Pastor Dick Sipe officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow in the church hall. Friends may call at the church from 5:30-8 p.m. on Sunday, where he will lie in state with military escort.

I can't say what made me think of Scott today. It just hit me out of the blue. A true testament to a man who touched many lives and will not be forgotten. I was saddened by his death when it happened. I am smiling remembering him today for the person he was.

To the family of Staff Sgt. Scott E. Nisely:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Scott, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the family, friends and admirers of Scott Nisely,
It is Memorial Day 2008, a year and a half since we lost Scott, and I find myself reading all of the entries once again in Scott's Guest Book. Yes, Scott has not been forgotten and if you are reading this, you are like me, still looking for those things that remind us of Scott. I'd like to thank everyone for the kindness and thoughtfulness that they have expressed. Your words were comforting then, and they still are! I'm sure that Scott is one of my Guardian Angels! And I'm trying to do right for him as he continues to watch over us.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Scott and I served together on the staff at The Basic School under Maj Rick Zilmer during Basic Officer Classes 5-86 and 2-87. There was no finer Officer, Leader, Mentor and Friend than Scott. I always liked him for his sense of humor, professionalism and "Gung Ho" spirit. Scott was a PT studd as an SPC and use to take his platoon out and humble them on the "washboard" hill trail at TBS. He also liked to exercise his Lieutenants using a deck of cards to determine the type of exercises and repetitions! He have em crying for mercy after going through the deck. It all seems like yesterday. I have a favorite picture of Scott and myself at a Company social occasion in "Whites". We are both laughing probably because he was cracking a joke. That is just the way he was. The world and our courtry are a better place because of him and are diminished with his passing. My wife Kathy and I want to express our deepest sympathy to Geri and Scott's Family. Our prayers and thoughts are with them during this extremely hard time.

We attended the Basic School [Golf Company 7-81](1981) as well as Amphibious Warfare School (1989) in Quantico, Virginia. He and Geri were married shortly after Sheila and I were in 1982. If I remember correctly, our platoon was his first at the Basic School. Though he was the youngest of the platoon leaders, we considered him the best one to have. His sense of humor, level-headedness, and genuine concern for us made our time at Quantico memorable. Because I held him in such high esteem, I had always wondered what had happened to him. Now I know, and my heart breaks for his wife and children. To Scott's parents, wife, and children, thank you for sharing him with us. He touched and encouraged many lives and will be missed by all. May the grace and comfort of God strengthen you in the years to come.

I do not know this hero, I just saw 60 minutes and wanted to send my respects to his family.
Although I am Canadian-Israeli, I spent 4 years in the israeli army and can appreciate both the heroism and patriotism he showed for his country. His family has made a huge sacrafice and hopefully one day soon we will see something positive come of their terrible loss.

I am watching 60 Minutes, and saw the part about Staff Sgt. Nisely. I am so sorry for your loss, even through the short wedding clips they showed, you could see how genuine and loving he was. I wish I could say more...but thank you for sharing his life with us.

I was Scott's chiropractor. He crosses my mind every single day. He was one of the easiest going people that I have had the pleasure of meeting. I miss him and can't wait to see him (hopefully) honored on 60 Minutes this Memorial weekend.

Tom Brokaw once said, "Heroes are people who rise to the occasion and slip quietly away." SFC Nisely rose to the occasion, but will never slip away quietly. He is still remembered to this day and forever will be by all the soldiers of the 133rd Infantry.

It has been a long time now since Scott has passed. I have not forgotten him, I miss seeing him. While delivering the mail he would have treats for the dogs, and something positive to say. Scott was well spirited, I am greatful to have known such a wonderful man.. My thoughts are still with the family of scott and I will remember Scott always, Rest In Peace my friend!

I don't know Scott E. Nisely nor his family, but in school I was assigned to pick a solider from the pictures of fallen heroes of the war from the Washington Post and write a memoir. I don't know what it is, but there is something about Nisely's picture that made me pick it. Best of luck for all of Scott E. Nisely's family and friends.

I met Scott and his family when they moved into the house behind our back yard. His daughter, Sarah, and I became instant best friends. Actually, the whole family became best friends with my family. He used to pick on us kids. I remember there were times that Sarah and I would be playing with our dolls and he'd come pick on us; so Sarah and I would just say, "oh just go play with your dolls" (since he has an extensive GI Joe collection). His reply..."they're not dolls, they're action figures!!" I also remember when my great grandparents were killed in a car accident; my brother and I went to their house and Scott just held us in his arms to comfort us. I will never forget him. He was like a dad to me and I love this family so much!! He was such a terrific man!!! I am so honored and blessed to have known him so well. Being a soldier was his life and he loved it; he couldn't wait to get back into his uniform to help. I love this man and will NEVER forget him. Geri, Sarah, Justin, JC, and Norma Jean, you all will always be in my prayers, and you know that I will always be there. Love you!

I knew Scott & Geri from Doane College and attended their wedding. Through Geri I met Scott and realized quickly he was something special. I was happy that my good friend Geri got to marry her best friend.
Through our college grapevine the word of Scott's death spread quickly and left our hearts blackened. Our thoughts are with you, not just now but in the healing days to come.

I do not know this Gentle Soul, but I have cried when reading about him and his death. I hear him saying not to hate nor want vengence, only he wants not to be forgotten and loved... He is sorry for not being physically with his loved ones, but is there, at every moment when they feel alone and sad, he is there and wants to comfort and wipe away the tears... May this gentle spirit rest in peace once he has waited for all his loved ones to reunite with him in heaven. The Peace and Joy of Jesus Christ be with you, Amen.

Dear Geri & the Nisely Family,
I am so sorry to learn of Scott's death. As long as I've known him he has been a warrier and devoted to his family. I didn't know he was in Iraq, but I was not surprised to learn of it since all Marines and Soldiers instinctively march to the sound of the guns. I have many fond memories from our time together in 2/3, TBS, AWS & I-I Duty. Mary Kathryn and I will pray that God eases the pain for you and your family. Scot made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and make the world a better place for all to live. In the words of an unknown WW I British Soldier, "We sacrificed our today so that others have a tomorrow." You have my sincere condolences. Semper Fidelis!

All I can say is thank you for your sacrifice. Our hearts break now, but I've never been prouder of my country. Because of our heros, our flag can fly with honor and brillance that will never fade. Thank you.

The Nisely boys were a "fixture" in Syracuse, having many friends. Scott was a great guy, and I have many fond memories of him hanging out with Rex Pearson. Scott was with Rex when Rex shot himself in the leg while hunting, and Scott probably saved his life.

His passing will affect many, I'm sure. My prayers and thoughts are with you and both your families.

Nisely Family, Loved Ones & Friends: I am so very sorry about the loss of your precious loved one. As I read the things folks had to say about Scott, it appears he left a huge impact on many, many lives for good. What an honorable legacy to have touched so many lives. To Scotts Family,

I am retired from the Marine Corps reserve. I was fortunate enough to have served with Scott when he was the Inspector/Instructor for Echo Co, Des Moines, Ia. I was the Company Gunny.

Scott was an outstanding Marine Officer who's greatest concern always was the training and education of young Marines to insure they were proficient in their skills. Scott was passionate about this and that passion extended beyond the Marine Corps, the Army Nat Guard was fortunate to have him as a member.

I remember Scott as a loving and devoted family man, we spent many hours talking about our kids.

God Bless Scott and his family.

To Scott's family
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I was shocked and deeply grieved to hear of his death. Scott was a huge inspiration to me in Taekwondo. He was always full of energy and helped keep everyone pumped up. I learned much from him as he was always willing to help others perfect their techniques. I saw Scott at the weight room at the YMCA last time he was home on leave. He was anxious to get back into tournament sparring with sights on going to the Nationals. His death has caused many to feel a huge loss. He was doing what he felt he was called to do. I'll miss his energy and dedication. Good bye Scott my friend. You'll always have a place in my heart.

My deepest sympathy goes to Scott's family and friends. As soon as I heard what had happened to Scott I prayed to God for his family, especially his wife and children and his closest family. Words are inadequate at this time to express the overwhelming loss or to know what to say to ease the pain. I pray that God will draw each of us closer to Jesus not only to help us through this rough time, but also so that we can have eternal life. Our lives are short compared to the eternity we face and I pray that the family will find comfort knowing that Scott fulfilled God's purpose for him on this earth. We will miss Scott. I pray that God will give us each a deeper faith to live each day as if it were our last because we do not know when our life will be over. It is hard for us to understand God's ways. God however does give us what we need by turning to Him. I have lost many people I loved and each loss is tragic, but God can give us comfort and the people we lean of for support can help to get through this. We will never forget Scott. He touched our lives each in different ways. I thank God for the time Scott was here. He was in my Taekwondo class when I took lessons from my husband. It was a shock to hear of his death. I pray for all the soldiers in Iraq and their families who have to live with the worry of losing their loved one and I pray to God for all the people who have lost the people through this war. Here is a Bible verse that I hope will give some comfort during your time of loss.
I will turn their mourning into gladness. I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow. Jeremiah 31:13

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was truly shocked to receive the news about Scott. He is one of my Black Belt and will missed. His attitude & enthusiasm in class provided everyone with extra energy. I want them to know that they and Scott will always have a place in my heart. Scott Nisely, as a Marine Captain in Kilo 3/6, was my company commander in the first Gulf War. Though I have not spoken to him or seen him since 1991, I will always remember him as a fine leader of Marines, a dedicated family man, and just a really nice human being. He cared about his Marines and it showed. I know that I echo the sentiments of the Marines who served with him. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Your family is in our prayers. Semper Fidelis.

MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO THE FAMILY OF STAFF SGT. NISELY. I, ALSO, HAVE LOST A SOLDIER TO THIS WAR. MY SON, CPL KENNETH CROSS, WAS THE COMMANDER OF A STRYKER VEHICLE THAT WAS HIT BY AN IED IN BAGHDAD ON 8-27-06. WE ATTENDED HIS WEDDING IN APRIL. THERE ARE NO WORDS TO EASE THE PAIN AT THIS TIME, BUT I HOPE GOD GRANTS YOU THE STRENGTH TO ENDURE THE DAYS AHEAD, AND MAY YOU FIND PEACE AND HEALING. HOLD ALL YOUR MEMORIES OF SCOTT CLOSE AND CHERISH THEM BETWEEN THE TEARS, AS I DO.

October 4, 2006

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Scott E. Nisely:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is those wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
