To the parents and family of Captain Robert Secher:
I was set to replace him in November of 2006 but heard of his passing just one month before I could relieve him. There is not a Memorial Day that passes that I don't reflect on his service and how empty the world is without him. I knew him during a deployment to Okinawa and so I can say the world is a lessor place in his absence. Please know I pray for you and esteem your son as often as I think about him. Please call on me if I can ever serve you.

Beastmasters checking in. I was comm on his Fist Team. He would take us coyote running around Las Pulgas. Ship life was a great experience 2001. We answered for America. 2003 we made dust of the enemy. I was in English class at Ohio State and unfortunately he was on Time magazine. I blacked out and took it out on an empty bathroom. I got back in 6 months later. I got to see His chow hall on Hanson in Okinawa. I enjoyed eating there. It was like going to your Buddy´s Bar. I just finished 20 years and 8 months and while my time in. I never had better Officers or senior enlisted then when I was a Beastmaster. Thank You

I knew Captain Secher As a First Lieutenant we were in bravo Battery first battalion 11 marines. We were known as the beast masters. I was a very junior marine and I was enlisted. The gentleman at the time Lieutenant Secher Was was an extremely good man. One of the things that he used to do is during our formation runs. We would come out and call cadence and he was very loud and proud. I´ll never forget how loud he was. and how good he was. He will live forever in my mind in my heart I Will Carry his memory and his spirit with me for the rest of my life, he will live forever. I would have died for that man always and forever loud and proud.

I am in San Diego this weekend with my youngest daughter (ten years old) and we drove by the Navy base where we left for our work-ups and deployment with the 15th MEU in 2001. I shared your story with her and showed her the pictures of you from this site. I made sure to highlight the picture of you doing the robot as it still cracks me up. Hello,
We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Robert Michael Secher US Marine Captain.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Rob, as always, keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers this Memorial Day. My oldest daughter keeps you in mind as well and kept you in her prayers at Mass today. I recently saw this quote from Ronald Reagan.
It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us, in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives -- the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. And all we can do is remember. Ronald Reagan

I served as a Capt in the Marines in Hit, Iraq where met Robert. We ate dinner together the night before he was injured. We were brothers in arms. Its been several years since his passing. I suffer from PTSD and his passing weighs heavily on me every year on the same day. Oct 8th, 2006... Two days prior, I had survived an IED that struck my vehicle. Robert was there for me and helped me make sense of it all.
I don't know why after all these years I am finally reaching out, perhaps to help bring some peace and healing. He will forever be remembered

Another year down Captain and still awfully missed. All of my leaders in all I've been involved in. You were (are) one with most influence on me. The Marine was awesome, the Man was great, but the Heart of yours was the most powerful in your leadership style. I miss you and know that'll you'll never be forgotten as long as I'm living and my daughter Kenzie. I speak of you often Sir and strive still to live up to your expectations. Rob--Once again I think of you on Memorial Day. I found a story from NPR shortly after we lost you where your father and sister appear. I've put the link below as well as a quote from your father...whom I'm sure you're with today. Thank you. Patrick
Mr. P. SECHER: I will tell what my thoughts are now; my thoughts are this: The people in this country, and especially the young people in this country, have got learn that there's a price to pay for having a country. Now that price does not necessarily have to be death, but it has to be a price that involves a recognition that we are a community.

At Rob's funeral, someone spoke about how great of a Marine he was and I couldn't agree more. But, what I've always told people when I tell stories about our time on the staff at Officer Candidates School is that he was a great man. Being a Marine was just part of him; albeit a very big part. It is why my wife and I chose to name our son after Rob in 2009. My son will grow up understanding what integrity, sacrifice, and honor look like and there was never any other consideration for my son's name when we learned he was a boy. For all of those family and friends out there, I hope it helps to know that Rob's story and as much of his life I know will live on through my son. He's only six now but already understands that a good friend of daddy was killed while defending our country and protecting our way of life.

Ooh-Rah & Happy Birthday, Sir!! On this 238th birthday of our beloved Corps, you are still and forever will be a presence we remember as we celebrate. It is because of YOU, Sir, & our other brothers and sisters who have given their lives, ensuring that we will always be able to celebrate the Honor, Courage, and Commitment instilled into the heart of all of us. You will always be the epitome of what the Marine Corps stands for; a constant reminder that our signature on that dotted line-although written in ink-is sealed with our own blood. Today, Sir, I thank you for your guidance; your leadership; your sense of humor; your service; and most of all-your ultimate sacrifice. You will always be present in each and every aspect of the Marine Corps and those who have had the pleasure of serving with you or beside you, to include me-will NEVER forget that. You have impacted the lives of so many of our brothers and sisters. Your sacrifice was not in vain, Sir; and it will NEVER be taken for granted. I know you're guarding the Gates of Heaven with the same pride and confidence which you portrayed in life, as well. Thank you, Sir; For your service and your willingness to give your all. Happy Birthday, Sir, and Semper Fidelis!!!!

Sir, its the day before OUR beloved Marine Corps 238th Birthday and of course you come to mind. My thoughts on here always relate to the fact that I miss you. You were the ultimate Marine, but even more so....you were the Ultimate Man and Friend. I just wonder on some days on how and why you can be gone, when you had such a bright life ahead. But it comes clear that GOD needed the Ultimate Angel to look over us as we defend others. Ill keep it short this time. Basically I miss you, and can only wish you were here to share my family life with you. Invite you over to for the Holidays, and Kenzie's birthday's! Happy early Bday, Sir. Semper Fidelis to my HERO!

Well Sir, Its been awhile since I've dropped in. Nothing has changed too much. Family is good, Kenzie is growing, and I'm still a Deputy but I'm a K9 officer now. Something I probably wouldn't have attained without having you lead me. You taught me loyalty and determination which in the end gives you a "never quit" attitude. Captain Secher I do accredit you with most of what I do and fortunately succeed in today. I miss alot Sir and would do anything to be able to call you and joke about old times and talk about the new. To invite you to my home with my family for a Holiday feast or two. But I can't...But what I can do is continue to tell me about what type a person you were and the one I admire. Yes the Marine was great, but the Man, Robert Secher was even better. Thank you sir for you sacrifice and I cherish the time we were working alongside one another at OCS. Semper FI Sir...And may God Speed!!!
Oh yea...Im gonna be in Tennessee next month and I plan on trying to catch up with your family...Cant Wait! But at very least I will visit you!!!

To the family and friends of Capt. Robert M. Secher:
Always remembering Robert. "Some gave all."
My name then was Lt. Kealy
October 4, 2012
It has been a while since I searched the names of some friends in the USMC, and here I've found this place to remember my old roommate. Secher and I were new lieutenants together at the 6-month basic officer course. I was married and living in town and assigned to his room for the many hours we spent waiting between activities in the early hours or late at night.
Unlike many officers that become officers right out of college, Secher had enlisted in the USMC at 17, served four years, and then went to college before coming back as an officer. While enlisted, he had served at the prestigious "8th and I" barracks in Washington D.C.. In addition to the normal enlisted service ribbons, he had a presidential medal on his uniform for serving with the president's security team. It was obvious: He was the best of the best. His room was always clean. His uniform was always perfect. His gear was always organized. He was fit. He listened to others. We looked up to him. He was mostly soft-spoken unless he was leading us on a run and let his command voice ring out to keep us in step.
On his shelf were photos of two great or great-great grandparents in military dress uniforms. One fought in WWI—for Germany. The other fought in the Civil War—for the South. With his wry smile he noted that he came from a long history of military service that just happened to be on the wrong side. Next to the photos were additional books on tactics that he studied. His first choice for a job in the USMC was to be a tank commander and a book on the tactics of the WWII German tank commander Rommel had a prominent place on the shelf. As is usually the case in the USMC, Secher wasn't given his first choice. Sure, he was disappointed, but he handled it with the same confident, professional grace that he handled any obstacle.
I feel foolish saying I miss him and think of him often now when, the truth is, I was busy and hadn't looked up his name for years before I looked up his name and learned of his death. Maybe I'm just frustrated that the world didn't stop on that day almost six years ago and somehow announce our shared loss. I'm sure it did seem to stop for some of you. For those of you who were maybe too young to remember him well, he was the perfect hero, ready to serve valiantly on whatever stage history would give him. He would be that hero that you see in the movies. We just lost him too soon.
To mom and dad, thank you for the amazing man that you brought into this world and shared with us. My son will know that I am a better man because of your son.
He was always faithful.

I served with Rob during 2001-2002 while on deployment with the 15th MEU. I was a Platoon Commander with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines. Both Rob and I sailed on the USS Dubuque. I am out of the Marines now and I have two kids, the oldest of which is six and I am trying to explain what Memorial Day is to her which is why I have been thinking of Rob as of late. I wish I had something more profound to say, but I would like to say that I remember Rob and was glad to have known him. We did not spend a lot of time together but the two of us had a chance to do an advance party trip for some some training in Darwin, Australia (right before Sept 11) and we spent some time together talking on the observation deck above the bridge on the USS Peleliu. I had many conversations with Rob, but I remember this conversation well because it was just a beautiful day looking out over the Pacific and Rob and I were relaxed and enjoying each other's company. Rob was always thoughtful and such a genuine person. I will keep him in my prayers this weekend and I'll make sure that my children know that it is for Rob (and so many others) that we observe Memorial Day. Thank you. Patrick

Hey there, just saw the facebook stocks going public, and I couldn't stop thinking about how you would probably be trying to find a way to get in on that action so that you could have even MORE money than you already needed. I still remember how you would give me that smirk when I used to tease you as we made our 14 hour visits to the defensive fighting positions in Jacobabad, Pakistan to check on our Marines about how you would be a 80 yr old Man sitting on a porch in TN with millions of dollars in the bank, but STILL have no sexy mamicita sitting next you. Oh well brother, Claudia still talks about you all the time, and she still tells me how you were the perfect gentleman, and how you would be great for some of her single friends. And I always tell her she is absolutley right, you are a perfect gentleman, a phenomenal Marine Corps Officer, and even more importantly, a fantastic beastmaster brother for ever. I miss you man, and I always will. I just wanted to share that thought with you today. I know I was all over the place in this entry, but my mind runs wild when I think about you man. I served with this Marine in Bravo 1/11. He was a great leader to his Marines and a Fine Marine Officer. Never did he ask his Marines to do things he would not, in fact I recall he was always the first to do them. Never one to make hasty decisions when not called for, always asking his enlisted leadership of what they thought and including them in planning. A TRUE MARINES MARINE. S/F Sir.....Gy Hessler

This year will mark the 5 year anniversary of Capt Secher's death. Every year at this time, I have an internal drive to honor his death. I still remember where I was; I was the first Marine in the shop to learn of his passing. As I sat at the computer and stared blankly at the words 'Captain Secher was KIA this past Sunday' will forever be embedded into my brain. He was a wonderful mentor, an outstanding Marine, and was one of the few Officers who found this LCpl's (at the time) jokes funny. I loved being on duty with him because he always let me go to the gym and 'get some.' Capt Secher's memory will continue to live on.

Big Man, I am in Okinawa now, and I made my way to the building named in your honor at Camp Hansen. I work in the 12th Marines CP, and everyday I walk down the hall, I always think how many times your boots hit the deck up here. Man, you are always on my mind buddy. I often think about our long conversations we would have walking the perimiter in Pakistan in that 115 degree weather for 15 hours, as much as it sucked then, I would give anything to have those moments back. I constantly wonder why God chose to take you when he did. I know he has a plan for all of us, I just wish he would of left you here for awhile longer. I miss you man. I know one day you and I will meet again, I just wish we had a day to tap beers in Kin or Naha and talk about the good times. I love you Man! Rest in Peace, and Semper Fidelis!

I will always remember you as Lt. Robert "The Machine" Secher. I count myself lucky to have served with a Marine as honorable as you.

Cubby,
Yes, if you can believe it, we're promoting Stefan to MGuns! Nearly 9 years ago that you and SSgt Stefan were working our position in Pakistan. In some ways, a long time ago. In others, yesterday! You'll be there with us on Wednesday!

Rob, Man there is not a day goes by that I do not think about my old FDO/Platoon Commander. I watched your sister Paula's tribute to you on you tube, and every time I see it, I get misty eyed. You were the best. I am getting promoted to Master Guns on Wed, and you would never believe who is going to step up on a ladder and pin me. The smallest Human being on the face of the earth; Fightin Joe Russo. We love you man, and although I am writing theses words today, I say them in my head 364 other days of the year. From a former Navy Vietnam veteran. As I read the many, many condolences for Captain Secher, I realized how special this young man was. I was attached to the Marine Corps for a year as a dental technician and I am always proud that I got to serve with the best this country has to offer. As I look at the photo of this young Marine officer, I am brought to tears for the ultimate sacrifice that he and so many others like him have paid for our country. Thank you, Sir. I salute you and your comrades who defend my freedom and the freedom of every American. I am praying daily for the end of these wars. Semper Fi

I served with then Sgt. Secher in 29Palms, CA from 92-96. The first time I saw him, I told him he looked like Bill Clinton. "Bill" became his platoon nickname. He was one of the finest most squared away Marines I ever worked with. He was such a close friend. I remember we drove from California all the way to Memphis on leave one summer and laughed the whole way. When my enlistment was up I decided to get married and Capt. Secher was one of my groomsmen. He will be forever missed. I've attached a photo of us together at 29Palms. It was taken somewhere around 94-95.

Well Captain Secher, its been 3 years since your passing. But I know your with us all, including my Wife and daughter. I spent 8 honorable years in the great ole USMC. But nothing was more HONORABLE than to know I served with one the best leaders the Corps ever had. Anyone that served with you can vouch for that. You took "taking care of your own" to a new level with me and Sgt Procopio. Your passion and love for God, Family, Corps was 2nd to none as you treated my family like your very own. Just dont think I haven't forgot about the $100 dollars you gave to me and Brandy to have a great time when we eloped in Vegas in 2004. I have lost many friends and loved ones in my lifetime, but yours was one of the most impacting. You were without a doubt THE ONE I looked up too. I respect all Marines and love my Corps, but no one will ever be able to replace you as a person, friend, and Marine. God Bless Sir. I miss you! To your family Sir: Please rest in comfort knowing that you raised and grew up with one heck of a son (man). He was without a doubt, A Marine's Marine!

I worked with Capt Secher at OCS for the first 3 years of my enlistment. He was an awesome and dedicated leader. I remember one time when he was the OOD and I was the duty driver and he and I were joking about the OOD office and how it was a closet. He was so professional and when I saw he passed, I was the first in our section to be notified through MCNOSC. I passed the word to my CWO who, in turn, retired to her office immediately. We could all hear her crying. We were all devistated. He was such a wonderful role model to the officer candidates that went through OCS as well as to the enlisted Marines. His dedication and professionalism never faultered and his humor and encouragement helped me get through what seemed like a long tour. Here it is 3 years later. I can guarentee that no one in our command will ever forget his leadership or him as a person. Always Faithful.

I just want your family to know the impact you have made on the life of someone I love. Thank you for your friendship and for being a man among men.
To your family, I do not know you, but you have all been in my prayers this week. I pray that the Lord will carry you through the valley until you see him again in heaven.
