10 years have gone by. Yet it feels like I was told of your passing 10 minutes ago. Mike, I swore to you that I would take care of your girls many years ago in Germany. I will not give up that charge until I am no longer on this Earth to carry it out. You are loved, and very dearly missed. Watch our 6. Until I see you again.

To SSG Michael Shank's family. I met Michael in Logar Province, Afghanistan in Septemeber 2006. We did a number of joint patrols, his MP Squad and my Embeded Trainers along with 1/1/1/201st Corp Afghan National Army soldiers. Michael was well respected by his soldiers and a big brother to his young soldiers. I'll always remeber him smiling and laughing. He was really fun to be around. My most memorable story about Mike is when we were given a powerful green laser light to use to warn approaching vehicles during traffic check points in Logar. Mike was using the laser at night to warn cars to slow or stop, but most Afghans had no clue what was going on and so the night was spent listening to cars slamming on their brakes and nearly crashing every time Mike used the light. One guy even rolled his scooter. Mike was just doing his job, but we had a good laugh.
Never forgotten. God Bless Mike's family. A Hero's Family!

I met Michael at Logar Province in April of '06. I returned stateside in June, and did not know of his sacrifice until November. At that time I promised michael's mother that my family and I would never forget.
I assure you ma'am, that we haven't, nor shall we ever. The troops of OEF and OIF are the BEST that America has to offer....we all enjoy our little lives because of them. Sincerely, Scott Bibler

Michael was my first friend while he was living in MN. I still remember the day that his mother and him moved from the small town of Waterville to even a smaller town in TX. He was a great guy and a hero.
It is because of him that I recgonize what Memorial Day really is. I wish that it would not have taken his funeral and life to teach me this but I am thankful that I see this day as what it is meant to be seen as. Thank you Hero! I remember you often but will be praying for you and your family tomorrow.

Michael, words can not express the pain i have in my heart right now. I sit here one year from the worst rocket attack i can remember living through. I am going through this log and writing to all the friends I miss and here you are. I can remeber you as spc. shank at fort sill. Then i can remeber sitting at your memorial service, thinking this cant be real not you so full of life but that had to be why god chose you, to be a sign of fun for the rest of his angles.

January 13, 2009

On November 28, 2008, Michael's grandfather in-law, Carl McGehee, took Michael's two daughters to his grave to honor him on the second anniversary of his death. They said a prayer for him and released red, white, and blue balloons. That night Carl, who was ill with cancer, had a stoke and passed away on November 30, 2008. Carl loved Michael just as though he was one of his own. He took Michael deer hunting for the first time in his life, and taught him how to make hunting knives. They loved and respected each other and Carl was very proud of Michael, knowing he was glad to give his life for his country. Carl, too, served in the service during the Korean conflict and was honored with a military funeral. So on this day, I am paying homage to both of my military guys...I will love and honor both of you forever....Joyce"Denny."

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

As an army contractor it was my great privilege to spend a few days in Puli alam with SSGT Shank and his unit. That would have been in April, 06. I have never worked with finer people than the troops of OEF. Your loss is truly a loss for all of us, and you have my deepest sympathy and gratitude.
I spent 27 months in Afghanistan, most of it down range. There was never a day passed that I didn't wonder where we as a nation get such incredible people as those in our military. My wife and I have 3 children in the marine corps. We will never forget...never.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

SSgt.Shank--family,
I don't have to know him personally, but he was a child of GOD and I know WHERE he is now and WHO he is with. I am from Honey Grove Texas and read about it here in ft.worth where I live. I grieved with the family for weeks and I was MAD honestly. I still can't get in the spirit of Christmas when young men are dying over there. I want the family to know that I appreciate his service to our country and the ultimately sacrifice he gave so, that we can be free. I won't EVER forget his Christmas gift that he gave to me, to family, wife, kids and country. I hope the kids will know what a Brave DAD they had. I certainly hope we all will REMEMBER to pray this holiday for ALL the families who has LOST love ones. REMEMBER that because of their UlTIMATE Safrifices, we are living AND ENJOYING our families. I lived because you died and I thank you, thank you. If I had 10,000 tongues, I couldn't say thank you enough to ALL the servicemen who serves our country. I get so teary eyed, so I will close. I asked my brother(U.S Marines-Vietnam VETERAN (DAVID JOHNSON-BONHAM, TX to stand for me on Sunday as I wept here in ft.worth.

To the family of SSG Shank. My thoughts are with you as I share in your time of loss and grief. I lost my husband SFC Scott Smith on July 17th 2006 in Iraq. I can't tell you things will ever get easier because its just not true. The pain you have will be something that is with you for the rest of your life. I can however tell you that the pain will become more tolerable. You will be able to manage it with time. There still isn't a day that goes by where I don't have at least one break down. Holidays of course are especially difficult. Use your family and friends and don't ever feel like you have to put on a happy face for anyone. Take the time you need and grieve the way you need to. Everyone is different. You have to do what works and feels good to you. If you need to cry in the middle of the mall by god cry. Don't ever feel like you have to make excuses for any of your actions or grief. I know how difficult things are now and if you ever need someone who understands the time and pain you all are going through you may contact me. I still ask myself each day how am I going to get myself through this day? I know my husband would've wanted me to carry on and to be happy again so that is what I use to get me through each day. There are still many days where I think this is a dream and I wait for his call or his im or for him to walk through my door. I know things are hard and no matter what you will probably feel alone as I did and as I mostly do. Just take your time to have your moments between Shank and yourself. Say your good byes and know that this man is a hero and he will no matter what always be with you no matter where you go or what you do.

I will think of your loss often

My heart is heavy with grief for this heroic young man, who we as Americans owe so much to. I did not know Michael personally, but he was a friend and classmate of my son, Jeff Blain. There are no words to tell you how sorry I am for your loss, nor are there words to voice my gratitude to this wonderful young man for his sacrifice. May God bless you and strengthen you in the days to come.

Father we entrust our brother Michael to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

Mike was a great friend and brother during my time in the military he was a fair and firm NCO and one of the best men I ever had the pleasure of calling a friend. He will be greatly missed.

My husband and I knew Mike as a young boy visiting his grandparents, Joe and Kaleta Shank, in Johnstown, PA. We had the pleasure of taking him to movies and ball games, and we thoroughly enjoyed his delightful boyish enthusiasm. You have our sincere sympathy at your loss. God bless you all -- Morgan and Karen Stickler

Lynn and the rest of Michael's family:

I am so sorry that this has happened to you. I just wanted to share the one poem/prayer that has brought me some comfort with all the funerals I have attended in the past 3 years...

Do not stand by my grave and weep,
I am not there...
I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints upon the snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am the soft uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the stars that shine at night,
Do not stand by my grave and cry...
I am not there,
I did not die.

To Brandy -
In God's heavenly home, he sits upon his throne, watching the world and everyone who enters through his gates. If you wander just a few feet away from that throne, you will come across a great oak tree, casting shade for miles around. Under that tree sits a young man wearing green army fatigues, smiling
happily at everyone who passes through. Occasionally, someone will stop and ask this young man if he would like company. The soldier will look up, give a smile, and reply.
"No, I do appreciate the offer, but this spot is saved for a beautiful young woman and her two young daughters."
