Jason,

I will never forget you. Not a day passes that I don't think about meeting you and chatting about the changes in the Uconn campus and ROTC program. I will never forget what you did for the country, the dramatic impact you and your unit had on the battlefield over the course of your time there, and the selflessness you displayed in setting us up for success as the incoming unit. You were an amazing individual and Soldier, and you deserved the chance share your positive influence on this world for much longer than it allowed you. You're the motivation behind everything I strive for…

Sir,

It was an honor and privilege to serve with you in 3-67 AR. I am very proud of my time spent in 3-67. Mainly, it's because of serving with people like you and the other soldier's of 3-67 that paid the ultimate sacrifice. You are gone but never forgotten.

Death, be not proud

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

Jay,
For whatever reason, I have been thinking a lot about you this week. Maybe I was having ROTC flashbacks because I was trying to teach Navy, Air Force and Army Medical Students basic tactical skills. Every time they would screw something up, I remembered the funny things you used to say to me and my peers when we messed things up. You are the best motivator I ever met.
Thanks for the mentorhip, leadership, and most of all, friendship. Any time I have a rough day at school I think of you and drive on. You remind me of why I chose to go back to school: to provide good medicine in bad places for heros like you.

My heart felt sympathy goeas out to your family.

Thinking of you.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

On Memorial Day weekend, I was thinking about Jason. I knew Jason at the advanced course in Fort Leonard Wood, he was one of my fellow students. He had a great sense of humor, and impressed me with his confidence and poise. I can see why his Soldiers thought so much of him. He must have been a fine commander. He is not forgotten.
To a true hero:
God Bless Jay and his family on Memorial Day!

Jay was my Company Commander. I was the Scout Platoon Leader attached to his Engineer Company and worked with him daily from late FEB-NOV06. Although he was my superior, there was no one else I was closer to during that time. He was a leader who I really admired. When it came to decision-making he was deliberate and logical, yet he had no reservations in going head-to-head once he thought someone was being lazy or deceitful. He had guts and was devoted to his duty, often going out when he didn't have to. He easily led more patrols than any other Company Commander in the Battalion. His work saved countless lives in clearing the roads in East Baghdad of debris and bombs. It was easy to see the other leaders in the company losing their motivation and eagerness for the missions through the tour, myself included, but somehow he never displayed anything but an infinite drive to complete the mission. I spent a good deal of time with him because his sense of humor was brilliant and made those months in Baghdad bearable. He was also a good source for care packages and chewing tobacco, which I raided constantly. He was fanatically protective of those who belonged to him. I remember many occasions when he stuck up for me against superior leaders and took punishments on my behalf and never once did he lash out at me for it, even though he had every right to. On 26 November, 2006 I was crushed by his loss. I lost my Commander and friend. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about Jay. The world was robbed of a great man. I count myself lucky having been able to get to know him.

Dear Hamill Family,

I realize there is NOTHING that could be said to you that could ever ease the loss that your family has endured... I wouldn't even begin to try.

I simply felt the need to convey my deepest, heart felt condolences, to those that lived nearest me...

I SIMPLY HAD TO reach out to those that lived closest to me and let their families know that the sacrifice that their SONS & DAUGHTERS have made ARE NOT, and WILL NOT be forgotten, and were not made in vain!

We gladly add your beloved son to our prayers, along with ALL of our other fallen Sons & Daughters!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Months have passed, time has gone by but nothing is forgotten. Jason is in my daily thoughts. He is in the thoughts of so many. Jason’s name has been repeatedly mentioned in my family’s church on Sunday morning the past several months. I believe that so many of Jason’s friends feel the emptiness from the loss of such a great person that it is a challenge to move forward. A co worker of mine Greg (former Army), who lives in Texas just recently drove 200 miles round trip to take a picture of Jason’s head stone. I had mentioned Jason to Greg a while back and also mentioned to him that he was buried in Texas. Greg never met Jason but still felt the need to travel to the cemetery and take that picture. This is a great example of how the loss of just one soldier affects so many. I am forever grateful for the time I spent with Jason at Uconn and in the army. My only regret is to have not been with him on that fateful day. I am only comforted by the knowledge that other soldiers who surely loved and respected him were there to take care of him. I hope that everyone is your family is doing well…Very Respectfully, Nathaniel P.

Dear Hamill family

My name is Josh Ziel. Jay and I lived on the same floor his senior year at UCONN. We were also in the same National Guard Unit for several years and would keep in touch via email every so often after he graduated from college. The thing I will remember most about Jay as a friend is his infectious good attitude and contagious laughter. The thing I will remember the most about Jay as a soldier was his incredible ability to lead by example. The day never seemed quite as hot, the work never seemed quite as hard, and the mission never seemed quite as tough when he was in command.

I will miss him greatly, and you have my sincerest condolences.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Dear Hamill's
I went to school with Jason, Jeff & Stephanie - I've only just heard about this tragic loss. I know words can seem so hollow and nothing fills the void, except your faith - God has him now and when the time comes, Jason will be standing guard at Heavens gate and joyously welcome you home. I pray for all of you that peace will come, little by little in your hearts and you can face each day knowing Jason is missed, loved and cherished. I have great respect for people in general, but for someone who willing faces what our soldiers face each and every day just so we back home can have the freedoms we sometimes take for granted - oh, my heart breaks with the love I feel for all who can do that - HEROES who can stand at attention and tell us "Nothing will cross this line tonight, you are safe under my watch." May God shine His blessing down upon you always.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I went to high school with Jason and have great memories of him. Jason always made band trips interesting and was just a great friend in general, someone you could call anytime and know he would be there to help you out. He was always full of surprises and had an amazing sprit about him. He made a good time of anything and even though I haven't spoken to him in years, I know that he lived life to the fullest because that's the way he lived. Among the memories, I'll always remember him driving hours to surprise us in vermont and staying up all night to teach us how to play poker... then convincing us to have an early dawn snowball fight. Thanks for those memories, Jay. The world needs more people like you.

We were just freshman roomates at Uconn who lived together for one year. But I won't forget the great kid you were who always had something funny to say. Jay you were just a roomate and a friend back then, but now that I see all you have accomplished and sacrificed, you will always be a hero in my eyes.

To the Family of Capt. Jason R. Hamill:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
