Joshua Madden Obituary

Sgt. Joshua Barrett Madden United States Army

SIBLEY/MINDEN, LA - Sgt. Josh Madden, an American patriot, lost his life along with four other soldiers on December 6, 2006 as the result of a massive explosion in Hawija, Iraq. He died doing what he loved, serving the United States and defending his country, his home, and his family. He was 21 years of age. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division Wolfhounds.

Josh is the son of Jerry and Cindy Madden of Sibley/Minden. He is survived by his wife, Dani Smock of Athens, and a son, his pride and joy, Jaxon Levi Madden, 3 months old. He is also survived by his siblings, Jennifer Madden Benamati and husband Scott and their children Caden Madden Benamati, Baily, Ashlyn, Gabriel, and Jacob Benamati; David C. Madden and his wife Megan, and Kevin Madden; his grandparents, Simon and Dot Madden; his uncle Mike Madden, his namesake, wife Mitzi and son Ryan; his aunt Mary Bevill and her husband Bob, his uncle Thomas A. Richardson and wife Linda, aunt Sue Kinsey and husband Gene; and great uncle Frank Merritt. He is predeceased by his grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Richardson. He is survived by many cousins and friends.

Josh is survived by his best friend and blood brother, Aaron Goletz and fiance Anna Willis, his second father and mother, Robert and Teresa Goletz, and family, Robin Goletz, Kristi Goletz Patrick, Natalie Goletz and Eric Goletz of Sibley. Rarely have two boys formed a bond as Josh and Aaron. Their devotion to each other will always live on in the lives of their families.

Josh was born May 24, 1985 in Minden. He grew up in Sibley and graduated from Minden High School in 2003. He received the Drama Award, and Who's Who Among American High School Students and the American Legion Award. He founded the Honor Guard at Minden High School which served as the color guard for special progams at the school. He was a member of the Minden High School Crimson Chorus and performed in their production of "Grease", and "Hello, Dolly" as well as many others. He danced as Gene Kelly for area nursing homes and ran the sound system for many productions. He performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as part of the 225th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with the Crimson Chorus. He would bring his dress uniform home on leave and present the flag at memorial programs at his home church Springhill Baptist in Ringgold, LA. He joined the Civil Air Patrol at Barksdale Air Force Base during high school; he said he just wanted to help people because he knew that they were involved in search and rescue. He traveled to Arkansas and to South Louisiana on field trips with this group. He went through ground school in Shreveport and flew his first and last flight.

He was greatly affected by the events of 911 and decided early in high school to join the military. He enlisted in the United States Army right after graduation in 2003. he completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia and completed javelin training there. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii. He served his first tour of duty at Kirkuk, Iraq in 2004 and returned to Hawaii in 2005. Upon his arrival in Hawaii, he had a tattoo made around his arm of the cross of Christ and the crown of thorns. He received Special Forces training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina this spring.

Josh married his childhood sweetheart Aimee Danielle (Dani) Smock on October 5, 2005 at the Old Soldiers Chapel in Hawaii and became the happiest man on earth. He was deployed to Kirkuk for his second tour in early August. Their son, Jaxon, was born on September 1, 2006 in Shreveport. He loved his son from the moment he heard Jaxon was on the way, but had only two weeks to spend as a father with him. He did everything for him and was so proud to finally be a father.

Sgt. Josh Madden has earned the Combat Infantry Badge - 2nd award, the Overseas Ribbon, The Army Service Ribbon, The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expedition Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal-2nd award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Josh was first of all a good son. He loved his parents, admired and respected them. His father and mother gave him an Irish ring for his birthday while he was in high school. He loved that ring and refused to take it off even by the military. He told them that his parents had given him that ring and that was all he had to remind him of home and he would not take it off no matter what the retribution was. The family has been notified that the ring was found and will be returned.

He was the baby of the family and doted on by his brothers and sister. He adored his nieces and nephew and tried to be a good example to them. He was a comedian and loved to make people laugh. He was always doing comedy acts, loved to scare kids at Halloween, and would jump off his house into the pool. We all loved to hear Josh and Aaron tell stories about their many adventures around Sibley.

Most of all, he loved completely. He loved his family, his wife and baby, his God and his country. He was prepared to pay with his life and spoke of it during his last leave. He would not have wanted any attention paid to his death. He told his brother if something happened not to mourn him but celebrate his life.

That celebration will take place at First Baptist Church in Minden on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. Viewing will be Friday, December 15, 2006 also at First Baptist Church from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Gardens of Memory in Minden. Donations to the Sgt. Josh Madden Schlorship Fund can be made to Richland State Bank, 1222 Homer Road, Minden, Louisiana, 71055, account number 5554535 or the Jaxon Levi Madden College Fund, Capitol One Bank, account number 8074082794. Hey baby boy. I miss you every day. The kids are doing so much that I wish you didn't have to miss. They are such good children, and think of you often even now. Always will. It is Veterans Day, and I hate that we cannot celebrate this day of many sacrifices with you. The thought of you still makes me cry with a smile, your goofiness and refusal to allow anyone around you to not find a reason to feel joy is what I miss and wish my kids could see. Your son is such an adorable young man! He is so handsome and his mother is still a shining example of what a good mother is, just as you predicted. I wish you were here, for so many reasons. I miss you darlin'.
Love always,
your big sister

Dear Madden Family,

I was lucky enough to have met Josh in hawaii while he was stationed there. He was a friend of my husband at the time Michael Adams. He was so full of life and very funny. I just wanted to say I know this is late but I am sorry for everything you are going through. God Bless you all and you will always be in my prayers.

May 25, 2009

Today, I had the privilege of accompanying SPC Julio Sosa to the Gardens of Memory, in order for him to leave a letter for Josh. Julio was a member of Delta, 2-27 in December 2006, and a good friend of Josh. While we were in Minden today, we also went by the memorial on Summit Street and Julio placed a small U.S. Flag there. It is my fondest hope that the family is able to retrieve the letter from the gravesite and the flag from the Summit Memorial, before the wind and weather take them away. I know Julio really well, and those sentiments are straight from his heart.
He and my son, Jake, are now in the 10th MTN, stationed at Ft. Polk and returned safely from another deployment in Iraq in January, 2009. My son, Jake, was in Bravo, 2-27 in December 2006 also. Julio and Jake both thought very highly of Josh.
I'm writing this for Julio, as he was too broken up today to do this himself. That's how close he felt to Josh, and still does. Julio will never forget Josh, nor will Jake.
My best wishes to the Madden family, and especially to young Jaxon.

Yours truly,
Larry Snyder

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joshua, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To all of Josh's family and wide circle of friends, the Run For The Fallen team will be honoring Josh at the 2918th mile early in the morning of August 2, Day 49, as the eleventh mile in beautiful Land Between the Lakes National Reserve on the KY/TN border northwest of Fort Campbell.

They set out each day about 6:30am after reading the roll call for the almost 60 fallen heroes whom they will honor that day, so wherever you are, imagine a cool summer morning in a very peaceful place which you can actually see quite well on the hybrid map on the FLICKR pages on www.runforthefallen.org

A small flag with Josh's picture will fly in the breeze by the highway as a larger Old Glory is jogged down the highway by a lone runner or accompanied by friends or family if they are in the area or other concerned Americans adding their support.

On August 24 across the nation, small informal runs of friends can be organize to coincide with the Final Run at Arlington National Cemetery.

It only takes one person to get the momentum going as I found out in my home town of Irvine, CA , where this Sunday we shall remember that RFTF is honoring one of our own Mark Daily, just outsdie of Nashville TN. There has been a groundswell of support to our seven Irvine families by people who will not forget their sacrifice and plan to come out on August 24 in a show of solidarity to all familes of the Fallen.

Last evening a ret.Sgt Major from Laredo, TX made a long call to me after he had returned from three days in Clinton Co. IL where he had run miles for his son and his son's buddy, also Wolfhounds from Schofield, like Josh, who had been killed on Sept.23, '06. Normally reserved, quiet and deeply grieving, this encounter with such solid and almost overwhelming support from the small towns in Clinton Co. had unleashed emotion as he had run 8 miles on Tuesday and had received so much support and care from strangers. It had only taken one cold call by me a few weeks ago to the mayor of Germantown who grasped the significance and rallied every mayor in the county to get behind this RFTF outreach. It was a moving tribute from America's heartland and will not end there. Further plans are in the works to contact all those families honored that day. This Gold Star dad's experience may help other grieving Gold Star dads, especially, so if you would like to chat with him, just be in touch with me. Don't be a stranger!

After all, our friend James, was Yari Mokri's best buddy from boot camp all the way to Hawijah. Yari's mile is right after Josh's, so the lives of the friends and families of both guys will always be entwined however far away we may be, with your son and your family.

Cindy and I would like to thank all of you who took the time to sign and leave a message in memory of our son, Josh. There has not been nor will there ever be a day that we don't feel that a part of our lives have been shortened by his loss. His legacy will live on through his son Jaxon, who is now 19 months old. Dani has been a blessing to this little one and Josh had to have known that God had sent her to him. To those brave young men who also died with Josh that day, we feel the pain that their families have felt. The count of those lost has now come to 4,000. Too many, too many. Bless you all.

Josh, I wish that I could tell you one more time what a joy it has been to know you. It has been almost a year since your death. I think of you often. I have worried for your son. How will he ever know how wonderful his father was? I am finally coming to know the answer. Jaxon will know his father through the legacy of family and friends that you have left behind. You have touched so many lives! James and John loved you like a brother. John graduated from high school a year early so that he could follow you into the military. James has now followed you into the military life as well. Josh, I know that you would be so proud and happy for them! You are missed and your family will always be in our prayers.

To you, my youngest son. What do I say? I talk to you each day as I water the new sod on your permanent resting place. You were so full of life here on this earth and I know you had something to offer to all those who were around you. An ear to hear, a handshake of greeting, a shoulder to cry on, the taking of time to help anyone who needed you. You had grown in wisdom to the point where I was listening to you, not the other way around. What you and all the others had to offer mankind will never be fulfilled. But through your families, friends, and those others who loved you dearly, your teachings, your kindness and the honor that you stood for, will never die. That is why I salute you each day and am so very proud to call you, my son.

August 16, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dearest Madden Family,
You do not know me, but your Son knew my Nephew, Cpl. Jason Huffman. I want you to know that my heart was and is so broken for your Family as well as my own. I pray each night that God grants each family the Grace that only he can to you and each family of each and every fallen Soldier.
Like us, on Dec. 16th, 2006 you buried a "TRUE AMERICAN HERO".
These young men died a Very Honorable Death and I for one am Proud and Honored.
I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts. I know that it has been hard and I know that Gods Grace is Sufficient.
Remember this one thing:
Only two defining Forces have ever offered to Die for You...
Jesus Christ and the American Soldier
One died for your Soul and the Other for Your Freedom.

“Soldier”
To Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know

Final Roll Call

Did you hear the sad news today?
A brave American Soldier has passed away.
Called by the Supreme Commander over all.
Today he has made his final roll call.

Come Brother Warriors; let us reverently bow and pray
For this valiant Comrade, who has fallen this day.
We’ll drape his casket with a banner of beautiful hues,
Those glorious American colors: red, white and blue.

That star spangled banner he gallantly fought to defend,
Unyielding and undaunted, he fought to win.
He fought bravely and he passed the battle test.
Now the Supreme Commander grants him, “eternal rest”.

With dignity and honor, we’ll commit his body to the ground,
The bugler will sound “Taps” and we’ll fire the volley rounds.
The final military honors we’ll render somberly and ever so sadly;
“Old Glory” we’ll solemnly precisely fold and reverently give to his family.

Each Memorial Day we will recall our fallen comrade’s name,
And attest that his supreme sacrifice was not in vain;
For this lasting legacy he gave to all generations;
“It’s honorable to respect our flag and to defend our great nation.”

So close ranks brother warriors, for our ranks are thinning.
We must keep on fighting and keep on winning.
With pride and honor we’ll march and stand tall,
And we’ll proudly - proudly - salute “Old Glory”
‘til we too make our final roll call.

Farewell Sgt. Madden - Be At Ease; Rest In Peace

Mrs. Maddan
I was a Fine Arts student of yours two semesters ago. When I heard about the loss of your son it jogged my memory back to one day in class, when he called you. You were so happy because you hadn't heard from him in so long. I remember you smiling and laughing and the joy in your voice. You then wrote on the board that class was dismissed. I now know why it was so important that you spoke with him because that could have been the last time, but thankfully it wasn't. My Prayers are with you and your family.

The saying below always sets my soul at peace when a loved one passes. It reminds me that they are happy and they don't want us to be sad because they're in a better place.

"When You Are Born
You Cry And The World Is Happy
When You Die
You're Happy And The World Cries"

There are many hearts which cry with yours. My son joined the army, my nephew and son-in-law both fought this endless battle in iraq. my daughter took piano lessons from Cindy whom advised she was at such a young age she should know the entire alphabet, but was willing to continue to teach her, regardless of the struggle. Josh, whom i never met, was blessed with the same qualities. The moment i discovered our terrible loss, i will never forget. a young man named chase perot, and his father mark wept uncontrollably. Not knowing either one very well, i was unable to distinguish relationship. my son-in-law CPL Johnathon Nash USMC, who just arrived from his tour of duty will be with your family on Sat. GOD BLESS AMERICA

Dear Family of Josh Madden,
Through tears I write to you. At this very time you are visiting with those who have come to comfort and console you at Josh's visitation. My prayers at this very hour are for strength, comfort and the peace that only God can give. Josh's life was not in vain. Thank you for molding Josh into the man that he is. He lives on in your memories and in his precious son. Thank God for the gift of the memories that you have of Josh. Hold on to these memories to share with Jaxon later in his life. Teach him the ways of his father. Let him know that his father died protecting the lives of others. Let Jaxon know how grateful we are for his service to our country. My prayers will be with you through the days ahead. I pray that God will wrap you in His loving arms and comfort you as only a loving Father, who gave His Son for us, can do.

Our family was saddened to hear about Josh's ultimate sacrifice, for his country and his family. But we are proud to say we're from Minden, too, the home of a hero such as Josh. Although we haven't seen your family in years, know that our hearts and prayers are with you. And even though we only knew Josh from the days that our boys, Adam and Ben, stayed with him at Mrs. Littleton's, we are proud to say that we knew him. May the Lord give you strength for the days to come. Josh may be gone, but you have your memories forever. Don't let them fade.

Dear Madden Family,
My Husband and myself were friends of Josh and we were neighbors here in Hawaii. I just wanted to say that he was a wonderful person and it hurt when we found out the news he was like a brother to us and an uncle to the kids. I had only known him for a year but it felt like a lifetime. He would always come up to the window and scare me when I was making breakfast. Mr. and Mrs. Madden, Dani know he is in a better place keeping watch over everyone. Josh we miss you. You will never be forgotten.

Sent by Angel Stanton (Minden). How proud you must be of your son, husband, brother, friend who so bravely defended our country. Just wanted you to know that although I am not directly affected by this war, I am so deeply affected every time I read an obituary such as your Josh's. I am deeply moved and so very thankful for those that continue to support our country and love our God. May our God give you peace through this most difficult time.
