Though I knew Jimmy only briefly at Duke more than 20 years ago, his kindness, unbounded positive energy, smile, and boisterous laugh were unforgettable. When I heard the tragic news of Jimmy's passing, I remember being both deeply saddened for all of his loved ones, friends, teammates, and fellow rangers and soldiers, and also honored to have briefly known him during a time when I was struggling with life and needed lots of kindness and patience. All the moving articles about, and tributes to, Jimmy over the years beautifully depict what an amazing person he was and how much of a positive impact he made on everyone who knew him. It's also clear that Jimmy was always fully committed in all his roles, including military service. His deep love for our country and his selflessness and courage helped keep us safe and free. I will forever be grateful for his life and sacrifice.

To The Family of SGT James Regan:
I am also in the US Army, (Reserves) and was also stationed in Iraq at the time that your son was killed. Though I did not personally know him, My unit at the time was a hospital unit called the 399th Combat Support Hospital. We tended to all the many wounded, and also to the remains of all those who came through our hospital. Though we were stationed in several cities in Iraq, I myself was in Balad. I did not get to directly see any of those who may have cared for your son's remains, but it is likely that he was cared for by our unit at some point. I wish to extend my greatest condolences for your loss. I know it has been some 13 years since that time, but I want you to know that he and many other fallen heroes from that war will NEVER be forgotten. It is also a time in my life that I will never forget.I myself will be retiring from the Army in just a few short months, so I wanted to extend once again my condolences and the share pride that we all share with you as veterans who selflessly serve and sacrifice for our country, as your son, and to a much lesser degree myself, have sacrificed our lives for. Best wishes now and for always, SGT George G. Balzano.

Dear Regan Family,
I don't know if you remember but my wife and me accompanied the return of James and 19 other fallen heroes from Ramstein AFB to Dover AFB on a C-17. I played lacrosse at the University of Maryland on two National Championship teams 1955-1956, as you can imagine I was a bit disappointed with the results of the recent championship game.
I was thrilled however, to see the Regan Family honored on the field before the game, a very fitting tribute for the outstanding man James was in all respects of his life.
I hope your memories of James great contributions to his family and country to sustain all of you.

The image of the young woman in front of young Jims headstone ended up as a posting on Facebook (Memorial Day 2012) from a friend of mine, so I researched the name on the memorial monument and posted his story as an addition for those who see the image... such a young man, James. I wish you all the best and sincerely sympathize with your loss. Andrew R. Klinker.

I didn't know your son, brother or fiance, but like him I served my country too. I think I understand what it was that drove your son to serve his country and placed it in importance before even his own dreams. I think it is precisely that which makes us as Americans, stand apart from the rest of the world. May God Bless his memory because it is there that James will live forever.

To the family of this young, brave soldier. My condolences. I, too, lost my son Velton Locklear on September 23, 2006. These were brave young men that gave their lives for a free country, a free people, in far away lands. No complaints, no regrets did they have as they proudly marched into a foreign land. Although, part of my heart is gone since my son left us, I stand strong and proud of him and all the brave men and women that give their lifes for our freedom. God has chosen the best and the bravest to be at the entrance of heaven. My prayers are with you all.

My son Blake worked and trained with Jimmy in the same Ranger batallion at Ft Benning and was part of the honor guard during his services in Long Island. He later attended services at Arlington. The respect and admiration from both himself and myself for the service to his country and unit cannot be expressed in any words. Currently, Blake is on deployment in Iraq carrying on the tradition and duty that your son so nobly began. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you continue the long vigil to carry on not only his memories, but beliefs and values that he so nobly began. May God keep and hold your family in his fold and somehow ease the anguish that you must be going through as the holiday season approaches. Blake asked me to place a Ranger challenge coin on Jimmy's grave which I will honor this week with flowers and an American flag.

I am reminded of a letter written by Abe Lincoln during the civil war.

Executive Mansion,
Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

Dear Madam,--

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

May God bless your family and every other American soldier currently in harms way.

Sincerely,

Roger Pack

On behalf of the Gold Star Dads of America and American Patriots everywhere, we would like to send our condolences for the loss of your son James. As an ex-Marine and a fellow Gold Star Father I know the pain and emptiness you feel. I also know the pride that wells up inside you, and rightly so.

Your son died as a hero and a patriot, as did my son Rhys. These young men and thousands of others like them will continue to show this country, yes, even the world that we will not stand idly by while watching our world become a place of evil.

James’ mission here on earth is done and I pray that God has a special place for him.

My family will continue to lift up yours in prayer asking God to comfort and encourage your hearts. We will continue to ask God to put his hedge of protection around the American soldiers and the Coalition forces and to bring wisdom to our leaders and the new leaders of a Free Iraq.

If there is anything that we can do for you or your family, Please don't hesitate to ask.

August 7, 2007

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I cannot say I understand the pain of your loss. I cannot say I knew your son.

I can say what I do know, and that is there have been tyrannies in the past, there are now such, and there will be more.

I can say that Sgt. Regan lived and died so that we are not subjected to these evils. They have been, are, and will be in the future.

We can say that he gave the most honorable and most human of himself. And that he did so in an eternal struggle. And that he is on the right side of that struggle.

He has left behind more than his family and his fiancee, he has left behind a little heard but grateful and better world.

My condolences and eternal gratitude to the family and loved ones of Sgt. James J. Regan.

I saw the picture of Mary at Arlington, and was stirred to write the poem below:

Mary mourns

The eternal war comes home
As close as the heart
Lives together shortened
Before they could even start

Young men through love of their own
Volunteer to go
To fight the evil
And defeat the foe

But some must pay
The ultimate price
To die for their friends
And follow the example of Christ

May God bless and comfort your family and Sgt Regan's fiancee. My son is overseas now - and just recently lost a good friend of his and ours on Feb 18th. Their whole Bn and Regiment deserve our utmost thanks and prayers.

I was deeply moved by Jimmy's loss. Though I did not know him, his brother Rangers protected me and my sailors during special operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. I owe my life to men like Jimmy. He is truely exceptional and exemplifies the finest qualities in the American soldier-scholar-athlete. God bless his family and friends through this most difficult of times. Thank God for him and men and women like him. To quote from the movie The Bridges of Toko-ri, "Where do we get such men?"

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Dear Regan family
My only son is in marine boot camp right now. And I am certain he will be deployed. My heart goes out to you. Your son was brilliant student and athlete,he came from affluent back ground, went to one of the nation's best schools. He could have made a lot of money right away. Yet he chose to enlist in Army to serve his country just like many high school graduates from working class families in small town. My heart is absolutely broken for his death but I am sure he is rewarded in heaven for his selfishness and love for people.
I pay my greatest respect for his family for raising such a great son.

Dear Regan family, Although we didn't have a chance to love Jimmy, we were aware of his love for us...that being his dedication to us to see to it that we were safe. Amazing that a total stranger would give it all up for us. As I read all of the correspondence from others, I felt almost cheated that I didn't know him. But on the other hand, how proud I am to have felt his blanket of security he provided for us. Your family has always been truly amazing, Mary, there has always been a connection with your classmates. I can't connect with you right now, but please now that we are all leaning on the same wall with our hearts full of love for you all. Our deepest thoughts, Mary Jo and Mike Bilot (Gorman)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Regan,
Please accept our most sincere and heartfelt condolences over the death of James. Our son, Craig, is a U.S. ARMY Ranger assigned to the 3rd Battalion, C Company, just as James was. We cannot adequately express our sorrow concerning your loss. It is a tribute and an honor to James the manner in which your family made their statements to the press and public. James’ death is such a tragic loss, not only for your family but for our nation as well. Please know that you will never be without James in memory or spirit. We pray for your family and the repose of James’ soul. We are confident that James is at peaceful rest with our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. May God continue to be with you and your family.

In Memory of Sgt "Jimmy" Regan
You will never be forgotten.

My name is John Chartier I had the HONOR to be the Ride Captain for the patriot guard to HONOR this fallen HERO. Not only in NY but on the Drive down to Arlington and again graveside.

"Jimmy" I do not make many promises in life and the ones I make I dont break. I promised your Father You would have an American Flag. I promised your Father some information. Now soldier that shed his blood for me, I will make you a promise.

I know exactly where your body was laid to rest in Arlington, on that overcast chilly day. As I stood guard for your Family as you did for mine. I will never enter Washington, Arlington or that area with out stopping by and saying Thank you again.

May you rest in Peace Jimmy, your watch is over we have your back.

This is my prayer, that I say all day, every day, and until now have not shared with anyone.
Upon viewing the Guest Book, I felt complelled to write it down to share, so that perhaps you or others may draw some comfort from it.

Lord,
Thank you for the blessing you bestow upon me, great and small.
Thank you for the blessings I recognize, as well as the ones I do not.
Thank you for watching over the health and safety of my loved ones.
Thank you for affording me the lifestyle I enjoy.
Forgive me my transgressions, for I am a mere human.
Help me be humble.
Instill in me the will and courage to act.

I am not a religious man, but I do believe in Man's spirit, and the forces of good and evil within the Universe.
I think your son and mine were servng together in Iraq. May James J. Regan rest in peace.
