February 21st, 2007 was one of the longest, most trying days of my life. It's been 7 years already. I've wanted to sign this guest book for years now and finally decided it's the right time for me to do so. I think of Jeremy pretty much everyday and wonder if there was anything I could have done different or better. I was the medic on scene that treated him. It's crazy to think that I might have been the last person he saw. Although I didn't know him very well, from the few conversations that we did have, I could tell he was a good man. We actually had a lot in common. Please know that I did the very best I could with him. I am very sorry for your loss. If anyone in the family would like to contact me, please don't hesitate. (813) 777-9311. Please text first as I don't answer unfamiliar numbers. My thoughts are with you all always, but especially this week.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Barnett Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Jeremy D. Barnett US Army Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To the family of Sgt. Jeremy Barnett,
I just found out about his loss tonight from a fellow sailor that was on the George Washington with us. I know he wasn't very happy in the Navy and I am glad to know he found his calling and excelled at it. What a profound change in this young man. He gave his life twice and is a hero two times over. Thank you for protecting our country and being the man you were. I am very proud to have known him and serve with him. God Bless you and your family.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Never Forgotten! From the soldiers who worked, lived, and grew with SGT Barnett!
As SGT Barnetts first line supervisor I woudld like to share with you the thoughts and memories of SGT Barnett. My fondest memories was the day I pinned SGT Barnett. He was the most excited and proudest he had ever been. He'd waited a long time for the moment and when that day finally came it was bitter sweet for him! I mentored SGT Barnett along the way during his time in the FSE. Hard worker, determined and never discouraged! He never ever gave up in anything he did! You dont find that everyday. He had the heart of a champion! Now there's a 51 year old in Europe who now owns a piece of that drive!
SGT Barnett was an ideal soldier and would of become an excellent NCO, leader of soldiers!

From the members of his platoon:

SGT. Barnett,
I remember when I was going on leave he went on the same clip with me and all he could talk about was that he was so happy after how long he fought and how long he struggled he finally got where he wanted to be and that is a NCO of the US Army. He was finally happy for what he achieved. He was even talking about spending his career in the Military. To make a long story short he was a good man, with a good mind and kind heart. He will always be remembered as one of us, a 13F, FISTER!!!!
-PFC BALTAZAR, STEVEN

SGT, Barnett,
I remember when I was going to take over guard shift for SGT Barnett he had just pulled two weeks of twelve hour guard shifts. When I came up to the tower he was still bright eyed and showed no signs of fatigue nor did he complain one bit for the time he spent in the tower. SGT Barnett was a good man and a great soldier. He always did what he was told and never questioned it. SGT Barnett will be missed greatly and we will always remember him.
-PFC FINNEY, PAUL

SGT Barnett,

I remember SGT Barnett when he was a SPC and he was always eager to learn his job in the FSE. When we got SGT Barnett up in the FSE he was always eager to get his first fire mission. Though we joked around a lot with SGT Barnett it never fazed him and he would always get the mission or task accomplished. He was a great soldier!
-SGT HOPKINS, EVERETT

I will always remember SGT Barnett unique smile and the time we played
football in Kuwait. -Lt Rood

SGT Barnett unique conversations always brought laughs - SPC Stephens

SGT Barnett was always motivated to complete a task and knows more about
turkey hunting than anybody I know. -SPC Short

SGT Barnett was a soldier with a good heart and good intentions and will
always be remembered. – SSG Benjamin

SGT Barnett impressed me with his persistence and desire to always do better. He loved being a Soldier in the Army and always wanted to be where he could make a difference. He wasn’t the fastest or strongest Soldier, but he understood his limitations and knew above all else that if he cared enough about his job and his Soldiers to make a difference, he could succeed. SGT Barnett did succeed as a Soldier and a Leader. I was looking forward to serving with him and watching this junior NCO develop into a future leader. I am very proud of SGT Barnett’s service and am honored to have served with him.
~CPT GREGORY STOPYRA

SGT Barnett always made you feel better about your self. He had a way of making your problems appear less troublesome. I enjoyed every conversation I had with him and looked forward to seeing him develop as a soldier and adult.
We will always remember him.
-1LT Fazio

: I had never met anyone who took life in such strides as Barnett. He was always a dependable battle buddy and I wish his family the best.- SPC FEARY

Hard working, dedicated soldier who always motivated to do the right thing and who strove to learn and excel.- SGT RODRIGUEZ:

:Barnett was eager to be part of the team and was dedicated to doing things to the best of his ability. Always willing to learn and not easily discouraged were in my opinion two great attributes he held. Not to mention his ability to make others laugh for one reason or another. Barnett; you will always be a member of the Team.- SGT HOLDA

SGT Barnett was my soldier when he was a SPC. He was always ready to work and eager to learn. He was a great storyteller and would often tell us tales of his hunting trips, which always seemed to have a hilarious ending. He could always bring a smile to my face, no matter how angry or upset I was. He will be sorely missed by all.
- SGT Morrison

SGT Barnett was the kind of man every soldier should strive to be; Impossible to keep down and always eager to succeed. – SPC Toomey

I remember the first day that SGT Barnett came to my team. I told him to do a PMCS on the Bradley. He was like “roger Sergeant” .I’m on it. So, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I told him, with you being promotable, don’t look down about being a driver. You will move up as soon as you get trained up on the Bradley. “But, Sergeant, we are going to Iraq and I want to be an FO.” I replied, “Ok Seabee.” He said that he was going to prove it to me. I got told that my Bradley was still running in the motorpool with the tarp on top of it locked up. I called SGT Barnett and asked him if he cut the track off and he said, “I did.” I sent him down there and the track was still running. I said, SGT Barnett, you are no longer on a ship. It’s not going to float. SGT Barnett was the kind of Soldier that was always eager to ask a question no matter what was going on. I liked that in him. He was always willing to learn and did not care if it discourage others that he was asking questions. I remember the time when we had the mandatory meeting at the lake. We were all in formation and I was like, “Where’s SGT Barnett? Everyone replied, “I don’t know. We haven’t seen him.” “Here I am right here!” He was in his hunting clothes camouflaged and had just come from hunting doves. He was always willing to volunteer to do anything pertaining to his job to get out of the FSE. He wanted to be out in sector every chance he got to do his job. He was an outstanding Soldier who understood no matter what the situation was. I remember him getting ready to go on the Air Assault mission with me. “SGT Barnett, are you ready?” He told me that he was always ready. We sat on the bird for 2 hours until we got a stand down. SGT Barnett came over to me and was like, “SGT Stokes, what’s going on? Is the mission over already? We didn’t even go anywhere.” I told SGT Barnett, just to relax and calm down. You will get to go out and be that FISTER that everyone will remember once you integrate with the platoon. He felt really bad about not going out, after pulling a 12 hour shift and ready to go on this Air Assault mission. SGT Barnett, you will be truly missed. I am truly proud to have served with SGT Barnett and you will always be remembered as “RED 14”… 13F (FISTER) SSG STOKES (ASSASSIN 14A)

SGT Barnett was a truly amazing Soldier and a person. I can’t really say anything more about that young Soldier that everyone else has already said of him. The stories are always the same, he made you laugh, shake your head and think to yourself, “he can’t be serious,” then laugh some more. Barnett would be right there in the middle of it the whole time, laughing, as if he didn’t have a care in the world that he seemed to be at the end of that laughter. He encouraged it. Sgt Barnett also encouraged others by always striving to get the job done. It might not always ended up being right, but he gave everything he had to accomplish his mission or task. It is my hope that the Soldiers in this platoon never forget that SGT Barnett would always be there to give a lending hand, give you a story to laugh about, and work hard to get the job done. He is an inspiration to the Platoon, and I will miss him.

We are so sorry for your loss. Jeremy stands as a hero not only in the Army but the Navy also. He is an American hero but has left his mark in Europe too. I didn't know Jeremy but I am signing all the Guest Books of fallen soldiers in 1st Cavalry Division. He definitely stands in a class all by himself. We too have lost a soldier. Spec. Nicholas Brown was KIA on January 22, 2007 in Mosul, Iraq. It is because of him that I want to honor as many soldiers as I can. Nick's favorite Bible verse was Joshua 1:9. It seems to fit Jeremy too. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Thank you for letting me honor Jeremy.

I served with Barnett at Ft. Hood Texas after my unit got back from Iraq in 2005. We were both specialists at that time assigned to Avenger platoons and then I remember him reclassing to Foward Observer and after his training at Ft. Sill he came back and got assigned to 3/8 Cav. I had spoken with him several times before I left for Iraq again in 2006. He told me he was going later in the year and we wished each other luck in the 1st Cavalry OIF memorial chow hall. That was the last time I saw him or had words with him. We both got promoted to Sergeant on the same day which was August 1st of 06. I thought that was funny. I do remember him always making jokes or telling a story to break the tension at any given time. I know he was truly sincere about serving his country and was always enthusiastic about training or doing PT. He was a good soldier and I will remember him. My deepest condolences go out to the Barnett family. I am sorry for your loss.

March 6, 2007

Our deepest and sincere condolences to the entire Barnett Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Jeremy, we thank you for your service to our country. You are an American Hero who went beyond the war to giving life to another person by your organ donation. A gift that keeps on giving to that man. We grieve with your family and know the walk they all will be walking through. We lost our grandson in Iraq at the age of 19, another American Hero. Our prayer for you all is that the Lord will give you peace that surpasses all understanding; strength, courage and people who will reach out to you in the ways that you need. God Bless--our hearts go out to you and yours. Memories are the legacy of love.

Our thoughts & prayers are with your family. I coached the T-ball team that Jeremy played for. I have always remembered Jeremy as the little boy standing on the pitcher's mound shy & quiet. From now on I will remember the man he became and the sacrifice he gave. He is our hero! May God be with you and comfort you all.

Some people live very long lives and do absolutely nothing with them. Your son lost his life trying to protect this country from those who would destroy it. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
