Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let you and your family and friends know that we have made a small donation to the Teen Cancer America in the name of Alexander J. Funcheon US Army Sergeant.
We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals across the American youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

Alex...I never knew you, but I'm getting to know your Mom and Dad. They still love you very much. I'm sure your sister still loves you very much. Thank you for your service to our country. It's obvious when I read the guest book comments from your buddies that they respected you greatly. I wish I could have known you. There is much I would have liked to tell you. I'm guessing that when you saw life and death up close that you remembered the faith in God that your Mom and Dad have. It is my hope (and expectation) that you trusted Him in whatever you would face each day. I believe that most battle soldiers know that their only hope is in God. It is my sincere prayer that your Mom, Dad and sister will be reunited with you in Heaven one day. Meanwhile, I'll keep an eye on them and remember all of you in my prayers.

Hello Alex,
I may be out of the Army now, but I just wanted to stop by and tell you I think about the fun times we had together. starting in basic, then Korea, then Iraq. I think about that day alot....I dont think I can ever get it out of my head. Remember we used to make silly faces to each other through our windows in our humvee turrets, and always give each other the thumbs up, before rolling out on a mission. Who knew that april 29, was going to be the last day we would give each other thumbs up. Well...its not....I'm giving you one now!

To the family of Alex, I greatly appreciate the courage and selflessness it took to share this story. It is an inspiring story and many tears have been shared in the reading. It is difficult to convey how we proud Americans feel about the sacrifice your son has made for this country, and the loss you are enduring. I appreciate that you had the strength to share the imperfections of your son, along with all that you are proud of. I, too have lost a child, my daughter, under different circumstances and know how that loss has affected the brother who adored her, which gives me a special understanding of Gloria and how she is processing the loss of her beloved brother. God be with you.

I saw them before my son enlisted I knew them before they enlisted. I met them at the mall, in my class room and in the neighborhood. I knew them when they went to Vietnam and WWII.
We all knew Alex he is our son, our friend and we shared this space with him. We knew him by another name but still he was them. like him or not believe in him or not. He is a lost that we should all feel. For he is whom we value. God be with you.

Your Son was a True Warrior and Great Patriot. As a Vietnam Veteran that enlisted in the US Army in 1969 I can totally relate as can many Vets of past and present. We are a diamond in the rough and get molded into the people we later become. We thank GOD everyday we wake and before we go to sleep every night. Without GOD in our lives though none of this would make sense. IT'S HIS PLAN NOT OURS. We can only run the good race on the path HE has sent us.I was at your son's Funeral as an American Legion Rider and Patriot Guard. MAY GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY AND CONTINUE TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH YOUR WALK AS DIFFICULT AS IT MAY BE.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Before Alex left for Iraq, he was "adopted" by a 5th grade class at Bostic Elementary in Wichita, Kansas. The following is an original poem written by one of the students, Veronica.
A boy joined the army
To become a man
And he knew that he could
He said, "I can."
And that day he left
To fight the war.
He said, "I'll be back,
I know for sure."
But when that man's life
Was gone and taken,
I was sure that God
Must be mistaken,
Cause why should the best man
You'd ever meet
Go far down,
Down in defeat.
Who is this man?
This man at rest;
Why he's Sergeant Alex Funcheon
And he's the best.

My heart broke today
As I heard that mournful song
The song that is a signal
Of the end of day or life
The young man's return
Too long delayed he now returns
Forever not home, but to the grave
Slowly the music plays
That solemn, hated song
And the pallbearers raise their arms
A slow proud salute
To a fallen brother
Most never knew
They march to greet him
Five solders, one friend
All to guide their brother to his end
As we stand here
Those lives that he's touched
I ask that your remember
Everthing about him you loved
Every smile, every laugh
Every word, every breath
I ask that you remember him
as a solder, son, and brother
But most importantly
I ask that you remember him at his best
I ask that you remember him as a friend

To my friend Bob and the entire Funcheon family,
You have been in my prayers now since I first heard of the ultimate sacrifice your son, Alex, made for us all. I have searched for comforting words but what words are there at a time like this? I, too, am a father, and I cannot fathom the anguish of losing either my son or my daughter. I can only hope that I would be able to draw comfort from my faith in our Lord, as I hope you can. I know from spending early years in your home with your Mom and Dad, you and Don and Ruthie, that you are a family of faith. One Scripture came to mind as I have been thinking of you, the words of King David, who had just lost a child. He said, "I will go to him, but he will not return to me." Life is short for us all but you will be reunited with Alex at God's appointed time. In the meantime, God bless you all. May He give you strength to carry on and beautiful memories of Alex, who is now an American hero.

My sincere condolence to you and your family. You have given the ultimate sacrifice.
Today we honor your son who is one of the bravest and courageous young men who has sacrificed his life to protect and preserve the spirit and promise of America. Everyone needs to know how brave, skilled, and honorable our loved ones are. They are willing to lay down their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms American’s all take for granted.
I know how much I love and miss my Marine son, who is deployed. I know how much you must love your Soldie, Alex, also. I hope that knowing how special he was will be a comfort to you in the days ahead.
Blessed are those who mourn; for they shall be comforted.

Please accept my deep sympathy in the loss of your beloved Alex. The American soldier is without doubt the greatest hero we have, not only throughout history but also in our future. Not only did Alex help to preserve the world as we know it today, he protected the ideals of freedom for all the future generations to come. It is because of brave men like Alex that we can live with the fervent hope that our grandchildren and their own children will also someday be able to live in democracy. Heaven holds a very revered place of honor for your soldier. We will keep him and your family in our thoughts, and lift him and you up in our prayers each night.
May you find solace in the loving memories that you have of Alex, and may he rest forever in peace in the loving arms of God.
Thank you for the love and care you gave Alex while he was with us on the Earth physically, and may God's angels watch over him now with love and care.

Karen,
Its always sad to hear of a fallen soldier, but it is even worse when you know the family. I am so sorry to hear about Alex. My heart & prayers goes out to you and your family. There is nothing worse then losing a child. May God be with you and your family.
Love

My daughter (Danielle Syrcle) attends Bostic Traditional Magnet School. She did meet Alex when he came to school and she talked about him for days. She also attended the funeral of Alex. She will not talk about it. She carried his picture around this weekend in her pocket so we found a place to display it so we wouldn't forget his love of our country and his love for us. It saddens me to see my daughter hurt for Alex, it saddens me for Alex’s parent’s pain. We pray that your pain will ease as time goes by. Thank you for sharing your loving son with our children. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Uncle Bob, Aunt Karen, and Gloria,
I will never forget how much Alex liked to wrestle with his daddy and his cousins when you all would come over and visit. I know that there were many times that he would get to do that alone with you Uncle Bob, and seeing how much my son admires his dad when he plays with him, I know that Alex had that same place for you in his heart. I miss my little cousin Alex and those times we had. Aunt Karen, my heart breaks for you today on Mother's day. As it is my first as a mother, I cannot imagine the loss that you feel, knowing that you will no longer be able to hold your son on Mother's Day, at least here on this earth. That is the hope that we have to hold onto, put our faith in. We will see Alex again. Just think, he's getting to know Grandpa Sies and Grandma Myrtle, his great uncles Norman and Warren who were war heroes, Gramsi, my mother and others. You will see Alex again. "And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never overpowered it." John 1:5
You are always in my heart and in my prayers, Jessica
