Obituary of Edward Patrick Funcheon
It is with sadness we announce the passing of our father, Edward P. Funcheon, age 91, from complications related to Parkinson's Disease in Roseville, California on March 28, 2023. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1931 to parents Edward C. Funcheon (1906-1994) from Kilkenny, Ireland, and Mary Flanagan Funcheon (1906-1974) from Dublin, Ireland. He was one of three children including William, who resides in Florida, and Thomas, who died as a child. Edward's father came to America in 1928 at the age of 21 on the S.S. Baltic from Liverpool, and his mother Mary followed in 1929 at age 22 on the same ship. His parents were married in 1929 and settled in New York. His father worked as a jewelry appraiser for many years at J.J. Friel's.
Ed was proud to have served from 1951 to 1953 as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. where he was stationed for some time at Camp Pendleton in California. He began working for United Airlines in 1954, a career that would last 33 years, retiring in 1987. He married Joan Vetter Funcheon (1934-2019) in 1956 and settled in Plainview on Long Island where they had two children, Thomas (San Jose, California) and Edward (Palm Springs, California). Ed and the family moved to California in 1978. After retiring, Ed and Joan settled in Sun City Roseville in 1995.
Ed loved cars, home projects, gardening, and football. He was a very skilled handyman and could fix just about anything. He was continually working on projects in his home including, electrical, flooring, tiling, lighting, and plumbing. He did all of his own car maintenance and repairs. He had a quick mind for numbers and was successful in real estate. He was always on the hunt for a good bargain, especially when purchasing automobiles. Ed was known as a very tough negotiator! He enjoyed watching football on his large screen tv sitting in his recliner. He loved Italian food, steak, cheeseburgers, shrimp with cocktail sauce, potato salad, stuffing, oranges, grapes, tomatoes, ice cream, cake, and Milky Ways. He was particularly fond of ketchup and parmesan cheese!
Ed was a strong-willed, determined man. He was a good husband and father who taught his children the value of hard work and responsibility. He was an excellent provider for the family, and he always encouraged his two children to further their education. He was heartbroken after losing his wife Joan in 2019 after 63 years of marriage. He battled Parkinson's Disease for many years and finally passed on March 28. We are comforted to know that he is at peace and once again with his dear wife, Joan, and his beloved mother, Mary.

I never knew Edward, but I am certain we are remote relatives. My maiden name is Sharon Funcheon, and our ancestors are from Kilkenny. Our family name is so unusual that I feel we are all related somehow. I am sorry for the passing of Edward, but from his obituary it seems he had a wonderful fulfilling life that touched many others in a positive way. My prayers are with his family at this time of loss.
