I think of Shawn often. He was a friend I was very fond of for many years. Always cheerful and always great conversation that never ended and left my cheeks hurting. I regret so much that the last email he sent me was lost. I believe it was the day of his passing. I didn't respond until a few days later but never got a response from him. I sent a few more over the months, still not knowing what had happened. I finally did a google search. Almost a yearhad passed. I was so devastated. Our friendship had lasted years and sometimes we didn't talk for 6 months, but then when we did talk, it was as if time hadn't passed at all.
One memory that sticks out was a time at the dog park that his dog cut his foot and he was so upset and so worried. Brutus really was his son, not like a son, but his 4 legged son. He cut our dog park rensevous short to take his baby home to clean the wound. So sweet. Real good guy. He was an important part of the first season of Encinitas Kickball league too.
I will always remember Shawn and always miss him. I thank him for his service and love.

To the Martin Family,
I visit this page often but haven't really ever found the words to express how sorry I am for your loss.
I served with Shawn at CLB-13 and on the USS Denver. He was such an awesome person. He always had the rest of us laughing with his witty remarks and come backs. Since he was senior to my husband, the other Sgt. Martin, I called him #1 and my husband the deuce. I remember standing outside on one of the decks of the ship and asking how he met his wife. I have never seen a man act so giddy over a woman before. He told this long story about how they met and how in love with her he was. He truly was one of the good guys.
We miss him and SSgt Wilson and think of them often. We will never forget our brothers and will one day see them again.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Shawn, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Paul and Dawn,
I had the pleasure of meeting you tonite at the hotel site of the EOD auction, prior to the EOD Memorial tomorrow, which you will be attending for your son. It was so good to meet you and to talk with you... I really felt like I was in the right place at the right time. You both brightened my evening, and I hope I brightened your's a bit too. Bless your hearts for all you have gone through and will go through in the times to come. I know it will be so difficult, but I am so glad you have such wonderful memories of your son, and the knowledge that he loved what he did and the people he worked with.
If I don't see you tomorrow, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers, along with your DIL... I specifically looked up your son, so I could know who I was thinking of ;D I do hope I get a chance to see you again tomorrow, but I doubt it, as it will be a busy, emotional day. I'd love to introduce you to my husband if I got the chance, though.
Blessings to you all.
hugs and prayers,

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. As an EOD widow myself I am saddened to learn of another soldiers death but it especially hits home harder when it is that of another EOD family member. I wish to pass you loving thoughts during this difficult time. While everyone will tell you that time will heal all wounds and it will get easier with time. I offer these words of experience and hope. Time will not take this pain away however you will learn to live again even through the loss and pain of a wonderful man. Look for those that bring you comfort you and lean on them during this time. I found that talking about my beloved Scott everyday and passing his memories on to everyone I meet has helped a great deal. Remember that he'd want you to move on and he died for YOUR freedom and YOUR happiness, YOUR right to live in this great country...so honor that sacrifice by continuing to live on the same way you did when he was here to watch you and love you. He can still watch you from afar and a it is my hopes to someday be reunited with the man I love and lost, I hope the same will happen for you someday. While there are NO words that can bring you comfort, I hope that the memory of such a wonderful hero can help to bring that comfort into your lives again. This is a poem I received shortly after Scott was killed and I thought it might also bring some comfort to you.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
All the best to find your happiness again.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

It pains me to hear of Shawn's passing and him leaving his loved behind, yet I value what has done for us all. No other person could have done what he had done. He selflessly gave up his life to save those he was protecting. He gave the ultimate sacrifice and now enters the annals of those past before. This does not make the pain burn any less, yet in remembering his sacrifice we strive to be like he. Selfless. Stong. Proud. My Prayers go out to his family, and his friends. Be strong in your hearts for Shawn was strong in his actions. Farewell Shawn. You will never be forgotten, Ever.
Your brother in heart, Peter.

Dear Paul, Dawn, Nicole and Marianne:
This was sent to us when our "Hero" was so quickly taken away. We hope in some small way it helps.
TO MY DEAREST FAMILY... SOME THINGS I'D LIKE TO SAY...
BUT FIRST OF ALL TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I ARRIVED OKAY...
I'M WRITING THIS FROM HEAVEN. HERE I DWELL WITH GOD ABOVE.
HERE THERE ARE NO MORE TEARS OF SADNESS, HERE IS JUST ETERNAL LOVE.
PLEASE DO NOT BE UNHAPPY JUST BECAUSE I'M OUT OF SIGHT.
REMEMBER THAT I'M WITH YOU EVERY MORNING, NOON AND NIGHT.
THAT DAY I HAD TO LEAVE YOU WHEN MY LIFE ON EARTH WAS THROUGH.
GOD PICKED ME UP AND HUGGED ME AND SAID "I WELCOME YOU".
IT'S GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK AGAIN, YOU WERE MISSED WHILE YOU WERE GONE...
AS FOR YOUR DEAREST FAMILY, THEY'LL BE HERE LATER ON.
I NEED YOU HERE BADLY; YOU'RE PART OF MY PLAN.
THERE'S SO MUCH THAT WE HAVE TO
DO, TO HELP OUT MORTAL MAN.
GOD GAVE ME A LIST OF THINGS THAT HE WISHED FOR ME TO DO.
AND FOREMOST ON THAT LIST, WAS TO WATCH AND CARE FOR YOU.
AND WHEN YOU LIE IN BED AT NIGHT, THE DAY'S CHORES PUT TO FLIGHT,
GOD AND I ARE CLOSEST TO YOU...IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
WHEN YOU THINK OF MY LIFE ON EARTH, AND ALL THOSE LOVING YEARS,
BECAUSE YOU ARE ONLY HUMAN, THEY ARE BOUND TO BRING YOU TEARS.
BUT DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CRY; IT DOES RELEIVE THE PAIN.
REMEMBER THERE WOULD BE NO FLOWERS, UNLESS THERE WAS SOME RAIN.
I WISH THAT I COULD TELL YOU ALL WHAT GOD HAS PLANNED,
BUT IF I WERE TO TELL YOU, YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND.
BUT ONE THING IS FOR CERTAIN, THOUGH MY LIFE ON EARTH IS O'ER,
I AM CLOSER TO YOU NOW, THAN I EVER WAS BEFORE.
THERE ARE MANY ROCKY ROADS AHEAD OF YOU AND MANY HILLS TO CLIMB;
BUT TOGETHER YOU CAN DO IT BY TAKING ONE DAY AT A TIME.
IT WAS ALWAYS MY PHILOSOPHY AND I'D LIKE IT FOR YOU TOO...THAT AS YOU GIVE UNTO THE WORLD, THE WORLD WILL GIVE TO YOU.
IF YOU CAN HELP SOMEONE WHO IS IN SORROW OR PAIN,
THEN YOU CAN SAY TO GOD AT NIGHT..."MY DAY WAS NOT IN VAIN".
AND NOW I AM CONTENTED...THAT MY LIFE HAS BEEN WORTHWHILE, KNOWING AS I PASSED ALONG THE WAY, I MADE SOMEBODY SMILE.
SO IF YOU MEET SOMEONE, WHO IS SAD AND FEELING LOW,
JUST LEND A HAND TO PICK HIM UP, AS ON YOUR WAY YOU GO.
WHEN YOUR WALKING DOWN THE STREET AND YOU'VE GOT ME ON YOUR MIND...
I'M WALKING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS ONLY HALF A STEP BEHIND.
AND WHEN IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO GO...FROM THAT BODY TO BE FREE..
REMEMBER YOU'RE NOT GOING...YOU'RE COMING HERE TO ME.

Dear Martin Family,
I am so sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Shawn was such a wonderful person, and a great friend - one of only a few that brought you true friendship. Shawn will always hold a special place in my heart, as i'm sure he will with anyone that had the honor and privilege of getting to know him. He will be greatly missed by many. He is a true hero, in more ways than one.
Thank you Shawn - for your smile, your courage, your friendship, and for making the ultimate sacrifice for those that you knew and loved, and for those that you didn't know.

Mimi,
I’m so sorry for your loss…please know your entire family is in our prayers. I applaud you for supporting your husband through his deployments, as a service member myself I can tell you first hand it makes our jobs MUCH easier when the support in the home is strong! Shawn will not be forgotten and it's you that is charged with spreading the message of the sacrifice that people like your husband have made. Use your family as your support system…they love you! God Bless your family and God Bless this great country!
