I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.

The program includes, a DVD Pictorial Memorial Tribute, Music, Candle lighting, Balloon Release, and Refreshments. Each family receives a personalized ornament to place on a Christmas tree as a remembrance of their loved one.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. McArn who was KIA feb.19)and I always heard some crazy story bout what they have done earlier that day in a mission or jus actin silly all day. Alan and Lou, I am so terribly sorry for your loss of Derek. I watched him grow up at South Lindsay, and know how proud you were of him. Coming from a military family, this type of tragedy always seems to linger in your minds, but you never think it will actually happen.
Derek gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country and is know enjoying the comfort of being in God's hands. I know the heartache and loss are unbearable. Seek out God's help and comfort and know that you will see him again when we are all in Heaven.

From the time he was born,I collected him from the nursery and would meet Lou in big church. I knew that boy with that special smile was going to do great things... the greatest hugs (no matter who stood by waiting)and the greatest love for his nieces, nephew, and family.

I don't know most of you personally, but I've heard of all of you through my years of friendship with Jean. I just want you to know how very sorry I am about Derek. Knowing he is a hero doesn't make it OK - he's still your son, brother, nephew, uncle, grandson, etc and you miss him so very much. You'll be in my thoughts & prayers in a special way - we lost our little boy to cancer a few years ago, so we truly do understand having your heart ripped out. You will never "get over it", but you will eventually learn to go on, and even be happy again. This is all temporary, eventually we will all be together again in Heaven. I will always remember my mother teasing Derek about his little racoon that he clung to, saying that it was hers or him saying that it was his. Sorry it has taken so long to post our sincere regrets at the loss of Derek. We would like to take this opportunity to tell you how exceedingly sorry we were to hear the new of Derek's going home. Heaven has gained an angel and we're left with beautiful memories to get us through this difficult time. We watched Derek grow up into a fine young man and an awesome soldier. James, Jessica, Lanesha, and Derek all grew up together at South Lindsay Baptist Church, and its as if we lost on of our own. One of my fondest memories will always be a blonde haired little boy carrying around his favorite racoon and me teasing him, then watching him run behind his mother a telling me "It's Mine!" Our hearts are exceedingly sorrowfull at the loss of such a fine young man. Derek and his fellow soldiers paid the ultimate price so we can enjoy our freedoms we have today. "Gone but not forgotten," Although it has been four years since my sister Tina's going home to be with the Lord, it seems like only yesterday. We miss her everyday and everyhour. We think of her smile and extraordinary laughter and its as if she never really left us. Think always of Derek's laughter and his ways that made him special, and he will always be there with you. God truly is a wonderful God and he will help you and your family during this time of loss. You and your family will be in our prayers and thoughts.

It seems like a few weeks ago my wife was waiting for Lou to get Derek from the nursery at church so she could hold him. We wept when we heard about your loss. I kept thinking to myself, "Is he old enough to be serving our county?" Then I realized the time that has passed. We can only imagine the depth of your pain. As a video saluting our fallen heroes played at church yesterday, Sharon and I sat with tear filled eyes thinking of Derek and the tragic loss you are going through. We love you, and are praying for God's grace and peace to cover you. Thanks for your friendship, and the memories of Derek's early years. When I see him again, I will thank him as well.

I remember being in the youth with Derek. We used to joke around and have a lot of fun. He did a heroic thing and unfortunately we lost him in battle. He will be greatly and dearly missed. But he will not be forgotten. Thank you for all that you have done. We are praying for his family through this hard time.

I new Derek since he was a kid, I grew up at South Lindsey Baptist Church with his sister Lanesha from the nursery to when we were teenagers in the youth. I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great man who served his country well. My Heart goes out to his family during this difficult time and I leave with this, we will see him again when we meet up with him in Heaven

Although I did not know Derek or you, his family, please know that my family greatly appreciates his service to his country. The price of our freedom is high but is never paid in vain. My nephew is currently serving in Ramadi, Iraq with the Army, proudly as did Derek. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Find your strength in God, he will never waver. I don't know what to say except that I am deeply sorry for your loss. I had hoped and prayed for the time to come to bring him home safely. I was heartbroken and just couldn't understand when I heard the news. I can in no way feel the measure of your grief, but to know that Derek is with the Lord now is a comfort. To my dear Calhoun family,
Eventhough we have have only know each other for about 7 years, you have been an inspiration to me and my family. Lou, we spend our Wednesdays trying to make things better than what we have experienced through the first part of the week, but this past Wednesday, nothing I could do or say can make up for the loss you have suffered. We have spent so much time praying that it would never happen but God choose a different path. I wish I could do more to take your pain and heartbreak away.
You guys mean the world to me and I will always be here for you. Derek was special! I know that he will never be forgotten.

To Alan, Lou, Lanesha, and the rest of the Calhoun family.....It just ripped my heart out when I was there the day that the military personnel informed you of Derek's death. You have lost a son, a brother, and an uncle, but heaven has gained another angel.
Karla and I watched him as he grew from from a baby into a fine, young, man. Although he was taken in the prime of his life, there are many good memories of his life growing up.
Derek gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we could all enjoy our freedoms. Derek was a brave, young, man, and now he is a hero.
I pray for God's comfort and peace as we all get ready to say goodbye to Derek. He will be gone, but not forgotten.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.

but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,

I am Deeply Saddened to learn of the loss of Spc. Derek A. Calhoun, the Price this Brave Young Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.
May Derek rest safely now, in the Loving Care of God and may the Grace and Comfort of the Lord be with the Calhoun family.
There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank these Young Heroes for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

Though this soldier is not yet known except to their unit or families, my grief for the loss of you son/daughter is felt. I know what it's like to loose your child in war as my son was killed in action too. It feels that your heart has been ripped from you and you don't understand why this happened to your child. I've felt all you will feel in the coming days and weeks and though I’m not close in relation to area, but I am very close by email. I offer any support to you and your family that I can. It's with the Grace of God that I've gotten through each day and with His healing love and comfort that I've been able to once again sleep at night and not cry each day. Believe me I do know how hard it is. May God continue to heal you and your family and contact me when and if you are ever ready, even if it's to vent or cry. I know how you feel losing a "HERO",Becoming a "Gold Star" Mother myself on 25 March.. The sacrafice our sons and daughters are making on a daily basis should tell us all..These young HEROS knew full well what they were doing and did it proudly When you hug your loved ones tonight....
