Faoa Apineru Obituary

Faoa L. Apineru U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant US Marine Staff Sergeant Faoa L. Apineru, 31, passed away on July 2, 2007 at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System Hospital. He was born December 5, 1975 in American Samoa to Reverend Isaako and Tiute Apineru. SSG Apineru was a ten-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, a retired Staff Sergeant and Communications Chief with Task Force Rhino. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, who served the Marines in World War II. SSG Apineru was stationed at Camp Pendleton, 29 Palms, Guantanamo Bay, Okinawa, and Quantico. The Marine Corps family was very important to him. He often referred to his fellow soldiers as "My Marines" because their camaraderie reminded him of his close-knit Samoan family. They called him "AP" because they found his name hard to pronounce. In May 2005, SSG Apineru sustained a traumatic brain injury caused by a road-side bomb while patrolling the northern Iraq border, a wound that eventually took his life. The severity of the injury resulted in severe post-traumatic stress disorder, memory loss, nightmares, and emotional distress. He had to relearn how to perform basic functions, such as talking and driving. Yet through his difficult rehabilitation, SSG Apineru exhibited an amazing resilience and optimism. He was known in the VA hospital as "the Mayor," a hospitable and compassionate man who hosted barbecues for other residents and was a close brother to any vet going through a difficult time. His selflessness extended to the hospital staff, and he often created certificates of thanks to acknowledge their hard work. SSG Apineru rebuilt connections with his Marine brothers and renewed relationships with his family in American Samoa. The karate black belt and former marathon runner participated in the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. SSG Apineru is survived by the USMC, his mother, Tiute Apineru, brother Selemaea Apineru, sisters Finau Sulu Apineru (brother-in-law Sio Falaniko) and Makerita Tiute Apineru. He'll be remembered for his broad shoulders and easy laugh and boundless love for his nieces and nephews Ruby, Sabrina, Synclare, Kerri, Shawn, Sinalei, and Selemaea Apineru. A celebration service will be held Friday, July 13, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the 1st United Methodist Church, 203 E. 200 S, Salt Lake City UT. Family and friends may also call at the church on Thursday, July 12, from 7-9 p.m. Following the services, the burial will take place at the Utah Veteran's Memorial State Park in Riverton. To the family and friends of my brother Marine S/Sgt. Faoa A..P. Apineru. Unfortunately I have never met A.P; but want you to know that as A.P. guards the streets of heaven with "his Marines", his memory lives on not just with yourselves but witrh Marines and associates who have like myself never even met him. Tonight, as the Commandant of the General J.C. Breckinridge Detachment # 10 of the Marine Corps League I will have the honor of awarding the S/Sgt Sgt. Faoa "A.P" Apineu leadership award. Because I have spoken with those who knew A.P. I am convinced that there is no question to the fact that A.P. was a special Marine, and a special gift from the Supreme Commandant. God blessed us the day our brother Marine, S/Sgt A.P. joined our ranks.

To the family and parents of Faoa I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

Words cannot say the feelings that I have right now, I just learned of your passing. SSgt Apineru (AP) was one of my Marine Corporals while we were stationed on Okinawa. We lost contact while I was on embassy duty, however he was and will always be the hard charging Marine I remembered. I ran into AP again while I was going through MSG school in Quantico. As Marine SNCO’s we shared an embrace and talked about our future plans. It was great to see him and catch up on old memories. I’m shocked and deeply saddened to learn of this tragic news. You and your family will always be in my prayers. You will be missed. When I read your story of how you are called the mayor I can remember your kind heart and your big smile especially the smile, you were my go to NCO. You always brought joy to all who came in contact with you.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SSGT Faoa L. Apineru. our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Faoa. And to Faoa it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the Corps and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Faoa, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,405 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Faoa’s family and loved ones. Semper Fi !

Hafa Adai to the Apineru family. I would like to say how sad I have been to hear the loss of your son these past few days when I heard the news. AP was a good friend and soldier for all those lives he touched at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. I was one of the U.S. Army Military Liasons who took care of all the severely injured during my 6 month tenure at the VA SEP05-MAR06. AP was man of word and honor, always willing to help out his fellow Marines and soldiers through all their pain, treatments and tranisitions to a regular life. He will be greatly missed by my family as we grew to love him as we shared many days at the VA laughing and joking. God Bless your family!

I dont know if anyone else could have handled themselves with such class, dignity, and remain so compassionate after what happened in May 2005. You always called me to see if i was ok and vice versa. These phone calls were always important to me brother and i just want you to know how proud i am of you. Everyone who knew you is hurting right now and the sadness is at times overwhelming. We went through a bad experience together and you were right when you said "we will always be brothers now!" I think about you and the boys everyday. Ill be seeing you and Chris again someday, just help us deal with the grief...

My son, a Marine, was at Palo Alto at the same time as AP. Although Jeff can't remember him, I do. He was always quiet yet friendly and I know he was a very important part of the rehabilitation process to many of his brothers-at-arms. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. Our hearts and prayers are with you. God bless.

I had the privilege of meeting SSG Apineru on a trip he took to visit his family in Colorado. If I had to pick one word to sum up Faoa it would be love. He loved the Marines. He loved his family. He loved his life.
He is in Heaven now....looking down on us all with love in his heart and a giant smile on his face. He is finally without pain. He will be missed. God bless you Faoa, God bless the Apineru family, God bless us all.

Like other thankful Americans, I cannot read this beautiful obituary and not have deep gratitude for your dedication and selfless sacrifice for my freedom. Freedom isn't free. Thank you.
God Bless your family for their heartbreaking sacrifice.

I also could not pass by this and not say how sorry I am for your loss. I don't know your family, but would like to thank you and your Son for his ultimate sacrifice. God Bless.
Sincerely, a Greatful Mother

To my extended family,

I, like the rest of the family, am greatful to AP for his courageous and exemplary service to his country, and to you his immediate family for your sacrifice. It is a noble thing to volunteer to bring freedom to those who do not have it. It is quite another to give ones life doing it. While we mourn the loss of our sons and daughters as a result of combat, it stings when the loss is one of your own. May God comfort and watch over you, AP, the Marine Corps and America's fighting forces around the world. Semper fi...

To the family of SSG Apineru:I never met SSG AP but my daughter and I spoke to him several months ago by phone. We were given a DAV Mag with the article about him. My son is Cpl Christopher Winchester who is mentioned in the article. Chris spoke of SSG AP often and was very fond of him. I received a phone call last night from a buddy who was injured May 2005 along with SSG AP (Steve McClouskey). The call brought back the painful news I received July 14, 2005 that Chris had been killed. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. As it has been said to me, SSG AP is now guarding the gates of heaven. John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." My heart breaks for you. I know God will give you strength through this.

AP I love and miss you deeply. Your are truly a great Marine and my friend. You motivated me to keep my trucks up as you busted your butt to keep the comm up. You have made a difference in not only myself, but the Marine Corps. Now stand your new post and guard the gates of heaven and I will see you again. Semper FI Marine and God bless.
