To the family and friends of my brother Marine S/Sgt. Faoa A..P. Apineru. Unfortunately I have never met A.P; but want you to know that as A.P. guards the streets of heaven with "his Marines", his memory lives on not just with yourselves but witrh Marines and associates who have like myself never even met him. Tonight, as the Commandant of the General J.C. Breckinridge Detachment # 10 of the Marine Corps League I will have the honor of awarding the S/Sgt Sgt. Faoa "A.P" Apineu leadership award. Because I have spoken with those who knew A.P. I am convinced that there is no question to the fact that A.P. was a special Marine, and a special gift from the Supreme Commandant. God blessed us the day our brother Marine, S/Sgt A.P. joined our ranks.

AP I miss you brother. I have a picture of you hanging in my living room that will stay hanging until I'm gone one day. I'll never forget the good times we had in Krtsanisi, Georgia or downtown T'Bilisi. We climbed that mountain behind the signal center hung over and sweating like hell that one day and saw the bush full of a thousand lady bugs that we thought was some sort of omen. I have the pictures still. And that Georgian wine....damn we killed so many bottles....even the last day we were there!!! Two for the road!!! To the family and parents of Faoa I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

Words cannot say the feelings that I have right now, I just learned of your passing. SSgt Apineru (AP) was one of my Marine Corporals while we were stationed on Okinawa. We lost contact while I was on embassy duty, however he was and will always be the hard charging Marine I remembered. I ran into AP again while I was going through MSG school in Quantico. As Marine SNCO’s we shared an embrace and talked about our future plans. It was great to see him and catch up on old memories. I’m shocked and deeply saddened to learn of this tragic news. You and your family will always be in my prayers. You will be missed. When I read your story of how you are called the mayor I can remember your kind heart and your big smile especially the smile, you were my go to NCO. You always brought joy to all who came in contact with you.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SSGT Faoa L. Apineru. our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Faoa. And to Faoa it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the Corps and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Faoa, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

AP, I have been so Blessed to have you in my life as a "friend" and I have been so touched by a fine soldier as yourself. I love you my brother and I know you are shining up in the pearly gates of Heaven looking down without no more pain but forever in eternal peace. I won't ever forget the day we did the video shoot at ALCF a few weeks ago, me getting lost at the VA hospital in Palo Alto to pick you up, laughing, joking, sharing stories with you and your brothers (marines) and going to Chipole to get you that big burrito. I couldnt believe you at all of that, man. You will never be forgotten and I am so Blessed to have known you. AP, May you Rest in God's Forever Eternal Peace. It's so hard for me to write this right now.. Brother, I love you so much. I'm sitting over here in Baghdad, thinking of all the great times we spent together. Like when you came to my house for Christmas and you played in the snow with my daughters. Or all the great times we had in Georgia. Pictures and memories are all I have left of you. All I want is to see you one more time. Hug you one more time. I dont mean to be selfish, but I truely loved AP as a Marine, as a Brother and as a Best Friend. Hafa Adai to the Apineru family. I would like to say how sad I have been to hear the loss of your son these past few days when I heard the news. AP was a good friend and soldier for all those lives he touched at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. I was one of the U.S. Army Military Liasons who took care of all the severely injured during my 6 month tenure at the VA SEP05-MAR06. AP was man of word and honor, always willing to help out his fellow Marines and soldiers through all their pain, treatments and tranisitions to a regular life. He will be greatly missed by my family as we grew to love him as we shared many days at the VA laughing and joking. God Bless your family!

AP you helped so many of us without really ever knowing it. You showed us everyday the kind of person you were as you progressed after the injury. I dont know if anyone else could have handled themselves with such class, dignity, and remain so compassionate after what happened in May 2005. You always called me to see if i was ok and vice versa. These phone calls were always important to me brother and i just want you to know how proud i am of you. Everyone who knew you is hurting right now and the sadness is at times overwhelming. To the family of SSG Apineru:I never met SSG AP but my daughter and I spoke to him several months ago by phone. We were given a DAV Mag with the article about him. My son is Cpl Christopher Winchester who is mentioned in the article. Chris spoke of SSG AP often and was very fond of him. I received a phone call last night from a buddy who was injured May 2005 along with SSG AP (Steve McClouskey). The call brought back the painful news I received July 14, 2005 that Chris had been killed. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. As it has been said to me, SSG AP is now guarding the gates of heaven. John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." My heart breaks for you. I know God will give you strength through this.

I wrote this poem in his honor.

Who now rises,as his Glory comes
His life, that he so freely gave
Is in our hearts, free of the grave
I thank him for his vision of Freedom that he gave his all to preserve it. He is a hero of peace, love and freedom.
May his love sustain you though these hard times and carry forth into eternity till you meet again.

AP I love and miss you deeply. Your are truly a great Marine and my friend. You motivated me to keep my trucks up as you busted your butt to keep the comm up. You have made a difference in not only myself, but the Marine Corps. Now stand your new post and guard the gates of heaven and I will see you again. Semper FI Marine and God bless.
