Eric Holke Obituary

SERGEANT ERIC M. HOLKE of the California National Guard from Riverside died on July 15th 2007 while serving our nation in Iraq. He grew up in Riverside and Crestline. He graduated from Rim of the World High School in 1995. Eric was interested in helping children and becoming a Teacher or a documentary producer. Eric had been enrolled in college and worked as a Teacher's Assistant for the Riverside County Office of Education. He worked with autistic children in one of the Special Needs Programs, before this deployment. Eric had served two previous tours, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Eric had been discharged after his second tour due to an injury he had received after returning from Iraq. Eric dedicated himself to get medically cleared to reenlist again in the California National Guard. He insisted that he needed to provide a good life for his new family and to serve his country. Eric was called up in December of 2006 to serve his country once again in Iraq. He is survived by his wife Cassidhe and son Steven, a very large family which includes but is not limited to; His Parents Jack Holke and Nancy Holscher, his sister Erin, his Grandmother Maggie, Uncle Chris and Aunt Monika Holke, their children Shaun and Sabrina and their spouses, Aunt Karen and Uncle Ron Hart and their children Danny and Jeremy, Uncle Matt and Aunt Debbie Holke and their children Ryan, Tyler and Jacob, along with the other family members of the Holke/Hart Clan. In addition he is remembered by a circle of friends who's size and devotion speak to the positive and lasting impact he has made in a life so short. Among, but not limited to, these friends are, Ken & Becky, Jake & Robin, Papa Bean, Jenny, Craig & Lori, Stewart & Janet, Eytan, Jim C, Laura & Shawn, Art and many, many more. Those wishing to make a donation to the family or send condolences may do so by contacting the family's Casualty Officer, Sgt 1st Class Ronald Mays at March Air Reserve Base at 951-656-2011. Services were held at 1100 on Sunday, July 22, 2007 at Evans-Brown Mortuary in Sun City, California. He was laid to his final rest in the Riverside Veterans Cemetery Next to a sapling tree. There are those in life whose mere existence makes our own better in ways that we cannot quantify or point to. It is not any specific thing they did, but merely the act of being themselves that was the gift they gave us. We know it, deeply and painfully when they are gone. Eric M. Holke was one of those rare souls. The hole in our lives his death has caused will never be completely filled, for only he would fit there.

Eric, (Aka Gunter, Akaa Goonie-tar)

It has been some time since you were taken from us, but I still think about you often. I remember us sitting around the computer watching red vs blue. (They're just making up times!) hehehe! I remember us making your newest faire costume and your plans for your patchwork costume. There were so many good times, it is sad that they were cut so short. There is so much that has gone on since you were lost..so much I wish you were around to be a part of. I miss you goonie-tar. Thank you for what you have done for all of us and thank you for being a part of my life. I shall never again know a friend who is as memorable as you! I hope one day my son grows up to be a strong and caring man just like you were.

I love and miss you.

I just recently found out about what happened to Eric. I remember him from junior high and high school, we hung out a lot in junior high but drifted apart during high school. I remember him being my first friend when I moved up to Crestline in 7th grade. I was(still am) very shy and he was one of those to reach out when on my own I could not introduce myself and talk to anyone. He was a good person with a big heart. He was always nice and gentle to everyone.

My Dearest,

It was a year ago that you were taken from us. Your son had a very hard week as I did.

I think of you every day, every second. Not a day goes by where I do not cry for you, my love. We miss our prankster, Steven misses the bonding fights and tosses into the pool. I miss my knight in dented armor and co-conspirator.

Your dad, grandmother and your extended family which have kept in contact with me and our friends are all missing you.

'Til death do us part were part of our wedding vows; I may be separated from you now, but I will always be your love and you will always be part of our life. I love you and I always will.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Eric, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I also wanted to mention that the Jamboree Days parade will be held in Crestline starting in top town and ending at the 7-11 on Saturday, July 5, 2008. If I get my way, I would like to set up at the Lake Gregory Coffee Company on Lake Drive. The parade starts at 10 a.m.

Eric, you are one of many heroes that has died in the line of duty to this great country. It was a priveledge to know you. I will be thinking of you when I announce the parade at the Jamboree Days Festival in Crestline. Unfortunately, due to the extreme fire danger (and the fact that there were two major fires that hit the area last fall) there will be no fireworks show over Lake Gregory this year. Too bad. I was going to mention you at the fireworks show. Maybe they will have one next year. The show was cancelled from 2002-2004 for the same reason. I hear also that the annual run for Sgt. Landacker, who was from nearby Big Bear and also died in duty of his country, will be held in September. I hope to participate in that in your memory this year.

Every year at the Koroneburg Renaissance Festival, we hold a ceremony on Memorial Day to honor our fallen. Our faire family contains many active and retired members of all branches of the military and those of us who have not served hold a very high regard for these brave men and women and for the love that we all bear for this country.
This year, the ceremony was held in honor of Eric. His wife, Cassie, was given a seat of honor for the proceedings. His good friend, Ken, who spoke at his funeral, carried the American flag, flanked by two sword-carrying guards. The five flags for each branch of the military were present, their flagbearers men or women who had served or are still serving in that branch.
The procession began at the front gate at a funerary pace to the slow steady beat of the battle drums and ended at the arena.
Eric's story was told and his wife was given a laurel wreath in his honor.
I was given the tremendous honor of singing a song I had written for Eric.
After the twenty-one gun salute, Eric's cannon was fired. Last year, he had been on the crew of that cannon of the Memorial Day ceremony. When the master of ceremonies had discovered he would be shipping out the next day, he asked that Eric come forward and be honored. He refused to leave his post.
Then "Taps" was played by two trumpeters. The procession left the arena and marched up to the front gate where the American flag was returned to its pole. It was raised quickly to the top of pole then sank solemnly to half mast.
It is the tradition that the planning and production of the ceremony is passed on to a new group each year. At five o'clock, the flag was hoisted to the top of the pole again then slowly lowered. It was folded and given to the head of the planning for the ceremony this year. She in turn called forward the captain of Eric's group, Das Heigilstrum Fahnlein, and the flag and the responsibility for the next year's ceremony was gifted to them. One of their active military members was presented the flag to carry. He was then flanked by the captain and second-in-command who drew their swords to guard the flag on the march back to their encampment.
Eric, you have not been forgotten by your faire family who love you and miss you terribly. We have done what honor we could contrive to do to our hero and friend.
And as your German comrades say when marching into battle:
NOCH VIETER!
(Ever Onward!)

I first met Eric when I believe he had just turned 19. It was his first season playing at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. I still remember how young he was and how shy. I knew Eric off and on through many years, and always remember the big goofy and highly infectious grin. No matter how much time had passed since I had least bumped into him, he always made me smile. I last saw him in 2005 as he was being discharged and was so surprised by how much he had grown in the Army. I am saddened beyond telling by the news of his death, but also so glad that I had a chance to know him all these years. It also saddens me to know he left behind a wife and child, but this pain too is tempered with how glad I am that he and his wife found some happiness together. I will miss him always.

I dont know how to say how I feel. I am at a loss of words. Eric was like a brother to me and in my heart he always has a huge place. When he came to my uit he took me under his wing and started teaching me things that are crucial to working over here. Over 90 percent of what I know about the military came from him. I cried so hard being part of the honor guard and on the night that it happened. Eric I love you and will never forget you. To his family im so sorry for the loss of a great person and pray for your comfor every night. Knowing that Eric is watching over us on missions is a blessing. It makes me feel safer by a hundred times. I will never forget you and no will anyone who has ever met you. As long as you are remembered you have never left.

I met Eric, or I should say Gunter, six years ago at the Koroneburg Renaissance Festival right before he was to leave for his first tour of duty. Over the years, he left and returned twice. This time he didn't come back.
I regret that I was unable make it back to this year's Koroneburg to see him. I couldn't make it to the funeral so this is my good-bye.
Eric showed a courage I have never seen, a willingness to return to war despite the risks to fight for what he believed in.
I wrote the following for him. It says everything far better.

MEETING AT THE CROSSROADS

As I walked one day
Down to the crossroads
I met a man
We walked together a while
And he talked of life
Of all he roads we'd tread
As we shared those dusty miles

And he said he took the road to war
Maybe ne'er to come this way again
So when the time came to go our seperate ways
We did so as good friends

And we parted at the crossroads
Good luck to you, my friend
I will think on you as I travel on
Until we meet again

Several miles
And years down the road
We met again
Our paths crossed once more
We both had changed
Yet he more than I
There was a grimness that he bore

But he spoke not of that road to war
Just said he went that way again
So when the time came to go our seperate ways
I said, "The best of luck to you, my friend."

And we parted at the crossroads
Good luck to you, my friend
I will think on you as I travel on
Until we meet again

Then came a day
On a distant road
I met a friend
Who wept full sore
And I asked him why
He said, "Our soldier friend
Will come this way no more."

For he fell on that road of war
He will never come back again
We have truly gone our seperate ways
Good-bye and good luck to you, my friend

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. To my dearest Jack, we have worked together for a very long time and the one thing I always knew about you was that you had a wonderful son. Although, I never knew him I was always curious about what he was up to and was very proud to have known someone whose son flew to Afghanistan to protect our country after 2001. When he returned I felt relieved for you and just thrilled when he got married. I use to always tell people that my webmasters son fought in Afghanistan just after 9/11 which would always impress them. Your son was very patriotic and we need more men like that in our country. I am so sorry for your loss, but his legacy and the way he conducted himself in this life is something that can be very proud of!

Sergeant Eric Holke will forever be missed. In the short time he was assigned to the 1-160th Infantry, he changed the lives of many. As the 40th ID Commander, MG Combs stated, "he was a man who put others first, a soldier to be proud of". Soldiers in the 1-160th Infantry will be forever changed as will I.

I'm at a loss for words. When Ken called me and told me I didn't know what to say, just sat there in disbelief and couldn't say a word.

I still don't know what to say. I'm going to miss you. I'm going to miss talking with you during coffee, I'm going to miss fighting with you out on the battlefield.

Thank you for everything you've done. I'll never forget you.

“The Final Roll Call”

We thought of you with love today
But that is nothing new.

We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too.

We think of you in silence
We often speak your name.

Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake
With which we’ll never part.

God has you in his keeping
We have you in our hearts.

A Soldier's Prayer
(author unknown)

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Eric, I can truly say was one of the greatest people that I have ever met in my life. His smile, dependability, loyalty and sense of humor was always 100%.
Eric was that kind of guy that was truly intrested in being there to help another person. Words cannot say how special he truly was. I have been a friend of his for little over 8 yrs now and am truly grateful as to have had him in my life for that time. I had such a peacful, yet sad feeling yesterday as I stood beside his resting place while they buried my friend because I know that he is going to go to a place were he is able to relax and watch over and protect us all at the same time it is hard to not be able to have another actual conversation with him again.
He really always saw only the best in people and really helped to show you the same thing. If Eric sensed that something was wrong or you were having a hard time with something he really wanted to help you work it out and would not leave until he knew that you felt better :) It is so amazing the amount of lives that Eric had touched and made a impact on, You cannot say that about to many people.
What a great friend that I and so many others will not get to see again for a very long time...
We will miss him and hold his memories close to our hearts.

Cassidhe

I am so sorry for your loss. My son Spc. Laurence Simpson is in the same unit in Kuwait and is a friend of Eric's. He spoke often of your husband and referred to him as his "Buddy Holke". He asked me to send his condolences and to say that he is proud to have known Eric. I also wanted you to know how thankful I was that Eric befriended Larry and took him under his wing when they were on drills together. Larry had the honor of being a part of the 21 gun salute and service they had for Eric in Kuwait. He will be missed by all who knew him. Please feel free to call me if there is anything I can do for you and your son.

Sincerely
Rhonda Wright

I do not have words that can express how I feel right now. I am very sad to lose a good friend, even though I only saw him once a year since I moved to AZ. I am proud of what he did for our country and the way he treated his family and friends.

My thoughts and prayers go to Cassidhe and Steven. I am very sorry I missed his services this past weekend. I did everything in my power to try and make it out there. Unfortunately employers do not understand.

Eric, I will miss you. Rest in peace my friend.

My husband was the greatet man I have ever known aside from my own father. He was an extremely intelligent, thoughtful and loving man, who always put us first from day one. He claimed my son as his own and was always there for Steven. Giving him advice on how to handle any kind of situation our boy might find. To say he was devoted to us is an understatement. I know I will never meet another man like him ever in this lifetime.

The two short years we had with him were truly a blessing. The only comforts in this horrible time are that he and I will meet again, I truly believe that.

My heart and prayers are with his family and friends. Without them I would have laid down and died when the Chaplain came to the house of our friend where we were having a birthday party.

Since that horrible day last week, the National Guard has been there to guide us through the process of bringing my man home and making sure my son and I were taken care of. I know that I have many more "brothers" and "family" than I have had in my life. Amongst our reenactment friends and family I now truly have the military family to rely on for moral support.

Thank you Chaplain for bringing me the news before anyone else did. Captain Laverty, thank you for bringing my man home to his family. Lastly, I send my thanks to both you, Captain Laverty and to Staff Sergeant Tsunokai for assisting me in finding his wedding ring; I only hope we will find it, so that I can rmemeber the happiest day of our lives.

I will never forget the love Eric and I had for each other, nor the outpouring of love and concern shown to us by his unit, and of our family and extended family members.

I would like to post a quick note today, to be followed up with more detail in the next few days, concerning Sergeant Eric M. Holke. We buried Eric today at the Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors. In attendance were his family and many friends whom Eric had touched during his short life. The family and friends of Eric would like to thank the California National Guard for it's exceptional service in helping us all celebrate and remember Eric. Eric's elegy was delivered by Major General Collins of the California National Guard, and is a fitting testimony to the exceptional character and courage of this fine soldier. We will post some of the General's comments in a few days. He knew Eric and was able to give a touching, personal testimony of this fine soldier's service. Here are some of the comments from the program describing Eric's exceptional life:

Sergeant Eric Morgen Holke , California National Guard, from Riverside died on July 15th 2007 while serving our nation in Iraq.

He grew up in Riverside and Crestline. He graduated from Rim of the World High School in 1995. Eric was interested in helping children and becoming a teacher. Before his most recent deployment to Iraq, Eric worked with autistic children in Riverside and was enrolled in college. Eric had served two previous tours with the 82nd Airborne Division, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Eric was discharged after his second combat tour with the 82nd Airborne due to an injury he received in Iraq. He dedicated himself to getting medically cleared to reenlist in the California National Guard. He insisted that he needed to provide a good life for his new family and to continue to serve his country. Eric was called up in December to serve his country again in Iraq.

Eric is survived by his wife Cassidhe and son Steven. In addition he is remembered by a circle of friends whose size and devotion speak to the positive and lasting impact he has made in a life so short. Among, but not limited to, these friends are, Ken, Jake, Papa Bean, Jenny, Craig, Stewart, Eyton, Jim C, and many, many more.

Sergeant Eric Holke was posthumously promoted to his current grade, Sergeant, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service during the period June 1, 2007 to 15 July, 2007. Among his many other military awards are the Army Achievement Medal and the Distinguished Combat Infantry Badge.

We would like to thank all who have posted such kind and generous comments here.
