Goat, You are never to be forgotten. That is sure. It's getting close to another Memorial Day. I see a few from our rotation in 2004-2005. We all miss you, but know you did your job well. Best few memories of you for your family: 1) you were intimidating and quiet upon first introduction, but you crack a smile to make everyone know you're reliable and friendly; 2) for some odd reason, you chose me to teach on the SAW lane pre-mob (it was an honor to be chosen); and 3) you saw all of my knives strapped to my gear, first night in the Baghdad chow hall and said the most unsuspecting thing, "Easy... Evil"....it's a good laugh at myself today. Thank you for that PCC. It still makes my day when ever I think about it. Love that I got to serve with you and I hope your family is well ~ R.I.P.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Eric, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I served with Eric in 2005 when he was a soldier with the Alabama National Guard. We were medics working together with the Iraqi Special Forces, training and providing support for combat operations and convoys. I served with him for approximately 5 months and we became fast freinds. He was an honorable soldier with a desire to do what he thought was right. He was a man of courage and commitment and I knew I could trust him when things got bad. I will miss him.

Eric was a good medic & soldier but what made Eric special was that he was a great friend. How it made you smile when you saw him coming or you turned around and saw him standing there with that grin on his face.
For those of us who served with Eric, our hearts are darken by his lose but our memories of Eric and the time we got to spend with him (OIF 04-05)will always put a smile back on our faces.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Staff Sergeant Cottrell. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… his family!!!

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Eric and I were close the closest friends in high school we never left each others side. Eric and I were total opposites Eric was a wild man always telling it how it was. A true Hero, I on the other hand was a quit kid always keeping to myself. Eric brought out the true me to believe in myself. Eric joined the Army while still in high school and tried to get me to join as well but I refused to do so I was going to college. Soon after Eric was out of my life and I went off to college to fine out that college was not for me. In Jan 87 I joined the Army and around Nov 1987 Eric came to Ft Drum NY to visit me. What a true friend. Soon after the visit we lost contact with each other again. Today I received yet another disturbing phone call from a high school buddy Shaun. Shaun and Eric never lost contact and stayed friends over the years. Shaun found my number to inform me that Eric had made the total sacrifice to his county and had lost his life in Iraq. It’s been over 20 years since I hade spoken to Eric yet it seems just like yesterday we were in class together (skipping a few class together). I just got of the telephone with his mother, so sad. But I would like to say to all that supported his efforts and attended his funeral weather you knew him or not thank you. You support is not unnoticed. For those that had the pleasure of knowing Eric it was a true blessing. My God be with his family and I know he is still looking over us all. Good night Eric I miss you and now I always will.

THANK YOU FOR OUR FREEDOM
A TRIBUTE TO MY WONDERFUL NEPHEW SGT ERIC D. COTTRELL
Willing he gave
With spirit of conviction
With selfless acts of courage
With bravery and honor unmeasured
With a magnitude of strength and pride
Without despair, he lived a multitude of years in so few
The ultimate price he paid
For our freedom he gave
That we may pray without fear
Walk without coverage of shrouds
Live without terror
Educate without persecution
So our children are free tomorrow
Thou many have fallen before
Some will fall still
For this sacrifice so great
Thank you for our freedom today
Our hearts heavy with sorrow
Our tears are many
Thank you for our freedom today
His life he laid down
His work here is done
His beautiful soul takes flight
Wrapped now in Gods glory and grace
With tremendous love, gratitude and heartfelt sorrow. Thank you, Eric, for
my freedom.

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

Tears from Heaven were flowing
Causing the clouds to swell,
The Angels in Heaven were crying
On the day we bid you farewell.
It grieved us to say good-bye
The Angels knew our pain,
So their tears became the moisture
That fell in the form of rain.
God needed another Angel
Whose good deeds on Earth were done,
He needed someone special
You were the chosen one.
Happy memories of you surrounds us
They make us laugh and smile,
We were blessed to have you with us
Even though it was just for a while.
We will meet again someday
In the city made of gold,
We shall be together forever
God's words have been foretold

Eric was my brother and he will be missed by many and especially by me. This world seems empty without him in it, but we must be strong and know that he did what he loved to do. many people have offered there thoughts and prayers to our family and sometimes i wish that the prayers would just bring him back to us.... for those of you who have offered your prayers thank you on behalf of Eric and our family, may god bless you all.
