Rocky, my brother In arms. I am sitting here in Alabama right now just thinking of you man. It has been a very thoughtful night where I am at. I was laughing out loud to myself how I would play pranks on you in our living quarters in Afghanistan. Its been years since your passing and it is still the toughest thing to move on from. Watch over us Rocky like the fighter you are. Until we meet again brother.

We are sorry to hear about the passing of Rocky and are in gratitude to this heroic soldier for his service and sacrifice for our country.

This goes to the family of Specialist First Class Rocky Herrera.

Traci,

You can't begin to know how shocked I was to find out about Rocky. I'm so sorry I couldn't be there for you and your family. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you.

Herrera Family -
Rocky still comes to mind when I think of my boxing brothers and how the years have not diminished the comraderie we had - taking on all comers and preparing for the fights. Rocky was one of the best, always prepared and undaunted - and that is the way he lived. As soldiers say, he paid the ultimate sacrifice for America, so all Americans can live free, secure, and unaffraid to express their thoughts. Rocky was always a champion and now he is a hero gone to soon. To his children, please know that your father was a good and decent man respected by his friends, peers and superiors. He always stood firm and never shirked his duties. All children should be lucky enough to have a father like Rocky.

Rocky; It has been just over three years since I gave you my salute and a gut wrenching goodbye to a great leader and brother at arms on that warm fall day at our small dessert base. I have been blessed with this day to again sit and visit with you (if only in my memories) and think of how much you meant to everyone you came in contact with. I am proud to have served with you and to have had the blessing of seeing how much you cared for those of us around you. Though you are missed you will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!! Rocky,

It's been a year since you left us and it feels like an eterninty. Our lives are so different now without you. Thank you for being the best brother that you could be. I miss your phone calls and hearing about your projects. I also miss your prank calls too. Dominos has stopped calling me for money. :-)

We all miss you more that you can ever imagine. Our hearts are healing but it still hurts that you are not around. Keep visiting us in our dreams. It makes feel normal when we wake up. Even if it only last for a day.

Oh by the way, I know its you and Dad moving mine and AO's keys and hiding stuff from us. Well done!

I love you!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Rocky, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Traci and Family,
It has been almost a year but it still hurts like it was yesterday. I am so sorry for your loss. Rocky was a great friend and leader. Rocky was the first real Soldier I met when I got to Germany. He became my Squad Leader and a Good friend. We spent many good times together. He taught me how to be the best Soldier I could. I wanted to be a great leader, just like him. Many of the lessons he taught me still guide me in my Military Career today. I look back on all fun we had together in Germany, fishing in MO, and just hanging out. It saddens me knowing he is gone, But I feel lucky and Honored to have met and been friends with him. Rocky, you are and always will be in my thoughts. Thank You so much for everything. I MISS YOU MAN!

To the Herrera family,Iam sorry it has taken this long to post something but this is a hard thing to bare.I constantly think of my fellow Soldier and what he sacrificed. There were plenty of times that i played pranks on Rocky and he would do the same to me. Know matter how crazy things were Rocky and i always managed to have a way to make each other laugh and put the hard times behind us.Not a day goes by that i dont think about Rocky Herrera.I miss my friend and fellow Soldier and will never forget what he has sacrificed. though you have never met me, your husband has told me alot about your family.Im very proud to of served with your husband and we will all see him soon.Just know that he is in great care looking down upon all of us as our new gaurdian angel. To rocky, i miss u man and will continue to live my life to the fullest that you lived yours.Family first and always!Love you man!! SFC Herrera,

I am still stunned and hurt from your death. I remember the first time I met you as a young DS and I was your 1SG. You were an awesome addition to the team and always ensured things were done to standard. I enjoyed the times you would come to my office after hours just to laugh and joke. You said I was your mentor, but I was learning from you also. You always spoke highly of your wife and kids. I could see the joy they brought to your life. Rocky, I still miss you. To the family-be encouraged and know God has a perfect place for him. Thanks for the memories.

Dear Herrera family,
I am sorry to learn of Sergeant Herrera's death, but I wish to express to you my gratitude for his efforts in the Army. He began serving America and sacrificing for each one of us long before he was called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice. He is worthy of our honor and continued appreciation. Thank you for sharing him with us.

I am deeply grieved to learn of the death of Sgt. 1st Class Rocky Herrera and I wish to join his family and friends in saluting him for his life and for his selfless ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of others. My deepest sympathies extend to you all and I will be praying for you as time goes by. Cherish and talk often about the many wonderful memories you have of him and find comfort, warmth and even a smile and some laughter. Most of all I pray that you will allow the Blessed Holy Spirit, the Comforter sent by Jesus, Himself, to walk along side of you through the years ahead and give you peace and comfort in your hearts and minds. God has promised that if we will choose to draw near to Him, then He will draw near to us. And remember as you do that, that Rocky is with Him, and not so far away. In my heart, I feel that our soldiers are truly the sons and daughters of every American. We are proud of you Rocky and grateful to you. You will never be forgotten. Until the day that Jesus comes for each of us at our appointed time to take us where you are, we say to you, "Rest in peace, our son."

October 13, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Rocky was married to my Aunt Traci. I remember him from when I was a young girl and he had a strong black mustache. This is the kind of man that makes me proud to be who I am. To the family of SFC Herrera:

I had the honor of being trained by a real American hero. I had SFC Herrera as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Back in 2003 and he really made things go smoother for my whole class as he was our only DS because the others were at school. He always took time out to make sure we were all doing well and had a genuine intrest in our personal life. I read about his passing in the newest Army Times and had to find a way to say thank you. So SFC Herrera Thank You and may you Rest In Peace, you are a true American Hero. To SFC Herreras' family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

There are no words to express the loss of SFC Rocky Herrera. He was a part of our family and we will miss him. Rocky will be remembered as the best brother-in-law and Uncle the world has known. I have to tell the world what a wonderful father and husband Rocky was. He loved his wife and children more than some could have given over 100 years. As their 17 Year Wedding Anniversary approaches, please know each year would be something for us all to be in awe of. Children, know your dad loved you with all his heart. Rocky, we will miss your smile and silly pranks. RIP
To all the troops out there we send our love and wishes for a safe return.

ROCKY “THE ROCK” HERRERA

ONE DAY, ONE INCREDIBLE LIFE

For many, the day started in its regular way
Before it was over, there was not much we could say
Looking into our sweet family’s eyes
The hard truth was as cold as ice
CNN was reporting that three soldiers were killed
The emptiness in our hearts began to fill
Quietness filled the Herrera home
Rocky was gone and many felt so alone.
This is just a nightmare; we will all wake up soon!
Yet, the hours ticked away and sadness filled the room
Friends and loved ones came over one by one
Everyone honoring a hero and a job well done
How can this be, why was it he who had to go?
That may be something we may never know.
Yet, we know the kind of person that Rocky was
He did what needed to be done and did not raise a fuss
He was put in a spot for a decision to be made
What did he do? His life he gave!
He gave up his life to protect others
Understanding what he needed to do for his military brothers
Friends and family reminisced of the special man he was
So many of us remembering our special “Cuz"
We are sad because “The Rock” is no longer around
Yet, he would not want anyone to wear a frown
Let’s remember him for what he was to all
A gift of God, through his example, stood so tall
He is an angel who shall never fall
Our dear Rocky Herrera, you answered the call.
You earned your place as one of the best
Your memory and spirit, we will share with the rest
Thanks Rocky for all you have done
For always and forever, you will be our number One!

With sincere love, respect, and appreciation!

Your family

WE LOVE YOU ROCKY!

Rocky, As I have read the wonderful words that people have shared from their hearts for your selfless acts to serve your country it has comforted my heart. It is so hard to know that you are not here on earth with us your family anymore but I do know that you died doing what you believed in. I appreciate you and love you so much. I do know what grief this has brought the family but the kind words that are shared in this guest book has truly comforted me. I don't believe that we should ever forget any of our hero's. EVER! If the only prayer we ever pray is "Thank you Lord for those who are protecting our FREEDOM" then let it be spoken but please add that the Lord will protect all of them also.
Thank you for all you have done my cousin and I will deeply miss you.

Dear Herrera Family:

My uncle was lost in a tank in World War II, another uncle was badly injured and lived for years with terrible pain as a result, and my father-in-law lived his whole life strugglling but seldom complining after losing a leg in the D-Day Invasion, so I know the sacrifice that is made by so many to protect and preserve our freedoms in this great country. There are not words to express the gratitude we feel when such an ultimate sacrifice has been made.

One thought that might bring you some comfort - - No one is really ever lost, they live on in all the lives and all the hearts they ever touched. Rocky along with all the others who have given their lives in our behalf live on in our hearts, and we feel gratitude and pride for their heroism and willingness to give their all for each of us.

May God bless your family in special ways as you go forward with heads held high knowing his reward will be great on the other side.

I don't have those answers but as another Gold Star Mother I do have emotional support to offer you when the time comes and you want to reach out for someone who has gone through this same loss. Sometimes it is just better to be able to talk, cry or vent to another and I want you to know that I'm here for you. God has blessed me with the strength to do this and I'm thankful for that. May God give you and your family the comfort you deserve and His healing power to restore your broken heart.

Regardless of his mission or cause of death, every day takes guts and living with the fear of the unknown and never really knowing if your time is comming. I AM SHOCKED!! I was watching the news this morning and saw the funeral of my cousin Rocky!! Angelo and I are the same age and went to Jordan Junior High and West High together. Rocky and I only spent one year of High School together. I will miss and remember especially the memories of the reunion in Vernal and being able to spend so many fun times at Mandy's house. I love you for what you have done for me and my family in this horrible war!! Take Care and God Speed, Elaine, Jerri and Angelo, I'm so very sorry for this devistating loss!!

Dear Herrera Family:
I didn't know Rocky but I am somewhat connected through my dear Aunt Eligie who was married to my special Uncle Claude. Please know that Rocky's tremendous sacrifice for our country has impacted the lives of many. Our freedom in this nation is a reality because of the heroic American soldiers like your Rocky. May the peace of God comfort your hearts in the midst of your sorrow.

I saw the news report about Rocky and looked over at my husband and said, "Now there's a a Hero". I thought for a moment and wondered if he might be related to Angelo Herrera? Later I heard that they are brothers. I did not know Rocky, but I know Angelo. My prayers are with you and your family. The living that are left behind will carry the pain of this loss. I pray that you get through and remember you were blessed to have him for this time. My heart hurts for you. Take care Amy

I was told by another High School friend of mine that Rocky had died, we were just reminising and his name came up about a week ago. I will always remember his smile and his humor. He was always soft-spoken but funny none the less. I will always remember the fun times we spent during High School but what I will remember the most is the sacrifice he made for all of us and our freedom. I am truly honored to have known him and may he rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family.

The Herrera Family,
Rocky, you will be missed by everyone that knows you, you touched many lives with your kindness. The entire world appreciates you, for what you have done for our Country! Although, we will all miss you and having the comfort knowing that you are in the arms with your dad and our dad (Andres Gonzales) that we lost in May 06. I remember you always coming over my parents house to hang out with my brother Andy Joe Gonzales, when I was a little girl and you always had a smile on your face. Our hearts are with all of you!

Angelo and family:

I feel heart felt sorrow to hear of Rocky's passing. Had he not broken his leg his senior year, I wouldn't have gone to state that year. I'll never forget the time he shaved half of his mustache at weighins. I am proud to have known as a friend such a great guy and an american hero such as Rocky. People don't realize the priviledges and freedom's we have were it not for the sacrifices of our American troops. Rocky paid the ultimate sacrifice for his family and all americans. He was a true patriot.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the family of Rocky Herrera, please accept my most heart felt sympathy for your loss. Although there are no magic words to ease the pain of your loss, I would like to share the words of an unknown author. These words resinate in my mind when I contimplate the losses of my own life!
There's a Reason

For every pain we must bear,
for every burden, for every care,
there's a reason.

For every grief that bows the head
for every teardrop that is shed,
there's a reason.

For every hurt, for every plight
for every lonely, pain-racked night,there's a reason.

But if we trust God, as we should,it will turn out for our good. God knows the reason.
