I had the pleasure of having Sgt Hopper work for me from 2001-2003. It was a true honor to watch him grow from a young Marine fresh out of school into an NCO with the respect of his junior Marines. He was an asset to our unit and our shop, and was always willing to do what was needed to get the job done. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family as it approaches the two year mark of his death. I am proud to be able to call Nick a true friend. He is sorely missed as a friend and a fellow Marine. To his family and friends, my prayers go out to you. To Nick, Semper Fi.

Nickolas, I know that it's coming to two years since your death but to friends and family it seems like it just happened. The death of a child is something you never get over so please let your parents know that you are now ok. God has a way of giving us signs when we're still and I pray that God has allowed those signs to come to your parents and family. As a Gold Star Mother I know the pain of the death of a child. I also know that it's not the death we remember but the life you lived and loved. May that life be celebrated and remembered forever.
Your parents aren't alone and there are many who are there for them. If they ever want to talk to others who have gone through the death of a child or loved one in active duty please do contact me.
May God continue to provide His love and comfort to your family and friends.

I am very saddened to hear of Sgt Hoppers death. I was with MACG 28 as 1stSgt/SgtMaj of MWCS 28 just before I retired in lat e2004. We are a sister Squadron to 2d LAAD. I knew Sgt Hopper and am extremely sorry this happened. I wish I could explain what a great Marine Sgt Hopper was. He was the kind I wish I had a company or squadron of. I recall his sense of humor. He was a truely dedicated Marine and man in every meaning of the word. I know my words can not make things any easier but please know I too will miss him and he will never be forgotten.

Dear family of Sgt. Nickolas Lee Hopper, I am so sorry for the loss of your hero. He was a hero in many ways to many people. He was helping to maintain our freedoms and helping to bring freedoms to those that have never known freedom before. I send many packages to contacts listed at AnySoldier.com. Your Nickolas, being a volunteer contact for Any Soldier.com, was an angel to many in the field. He cared enough for his unit to help pass out mail to those who maybe did not receive any or as much mail as others. Helping them to know that they were supported, cared for and prayed for by us at home in the USA. What a true hero. Freedom isn’t free.
Thank you Sgt. Nickolas Lee Hopper. We miss you greatly.
May God’s Holy Spirit grant your family comfort as they progress through grieving for the loss of their very special hero.

Dear family of Sgt. Nickolas Lee Hopper,
We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.
Very Sincerely
Frank G. Noyes

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SGT Nickolas Lee Hopper our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Nickolas. And to Nickolas it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the Corps and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Nickolas, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,405 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Nickolas’ family and loved ones. Semper Fi !

Wow. I can't believe this has happened. I have known Hopper since August of 2001 when we met reporting at Aberdeen, MD for MOS school. We transferred to Cherry Point, NC and served together under the same group. I kept in touch with him until feb 2005 when I left the Marines for civilian life. He was an incredible Marine. He was the smartest in our class and excelled at everything he did. I would like to express my deepest sympathy to his wife and son. Also to the rest of his family and everyone else that he touched in his short life. Had I known I would have been there today. Please keep me informed about future memorial services. Semper Fi, Cpl.
