Matthew Emerson Obituary

Grandview, Wash.

Smith Funeral Home

Matthew J. (Matt) Emerson, 20, left this Earth to be with his heavenly father on Sept. 18, 2007, in Mosul, Iraq, where he was proudly serving as a Specialist with the U.S. Army. Matt Emerson was born on Oct. 20, 1986 in Sunnyside to L. J. and Ginger (Evans) Emerson. He joined a family that included his brother Joe and sister Christine.

A lifelong Grandview resident, Matt attended Harriet Thompson Elementary, Grandview Middle School and graduated from Grandview High School in 2005.

He had a lifelong passion for God and country, and entered the United States Army in July 2005. His boot camp training was at Fort Benning, GA, where he also graduated from Airborne School. Emerson's first assignment was at Fort Bliss, TX, from which he deployed to Iraq on Nov. 1, 2006.

A Grandview Greyhound through and through, Matt was proud to play Greyhound football through middle school and high school. He was also a three-year member of the GHS golf team, and was on the track team his senior year. As a younger athlete he also played soccer and wrestled. Summers were filled with countless hours enjoying God's creation, and his family home and yard. His skills and talents were put to good use helping his family with their cherry and apple orchard just south of Grandview.

Emerson and his family attended the Grandview Church of the Nazarene, where he took part in Sunday school and youth group. He had a solid, personal relationship with Jesus, and knew he could always talk with the Lord.

A loyal Grandview Greyhound and WSU Cougars fan, Matt also loved the San Francisco 49ers, and proudly displayed his autographed picture of Jerry Rice on his bedroom wall. His favorite movies to watch repeatedly were the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Black Hawk Down. As a typical teenager, he spent countless hours perfecting his video game skills, hoping to best his brother and friends. Driving through Grandview in his pick-up truck, he was usually listening to Metallica on his way to the home of one of his many friends.

Matt loved everything about growing up in his beloved hometown of Grandview. His loyalty, honesty and unique sense of humor endeared him to everyone who knew him.

Matt Emerson is survived by his parents, L.J. and Ginger Emerson at the family home in Grandview; his brother, Joe, of Cheney; and his sister, Christine, of Seattle. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Virginia Evans of Prosser; aunts and uncles, Iver and Camille Eliason of Tacoma; Vern and Cathy Emerson of Boise, Idaho; Inez and Jack Hughes of Pasco; Don and Barbara Olmstead of Grandview; Lou and Kathy Rabe of Crystal Lake, IL; and Robert III and Carol Evans of Kennewick; and by many loving cousins. He was also blessed with a host of close friends from high school and from the U.S. Army. Matt was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Christine Emerson of Tacoma; by his maternal grandfather, Robert C. Evans Jr. of Prosser; and by his cousin, Kristen Evans of Kennewick.

Funeral services for Matthew J. Emerson, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Grandview, will be Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Church of the Nazarene. Burial with full military honors will be at the Prosser Cemetery, next to his 'Bampa,' Robert C. Evans Jr.

Those wishing to honor his memory may contribute to the American Legion Post 73 Memorial Fund, in care of Greg Schlieve, P.O. Box 369, Grandview, WA 98930, or to the charity of choice. Friends who would like to share memories or send wishes to the family may do so online at matthewjemerson.com.

Rest in peace, our beloved Matthew. You fought our good fight, and we are all the better for it. You have left a hole in our hearts, which will be healed when we see you again one day.

In Memory of Matthew ~ (Debra Estep)

September 19, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Matthew, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My name is Barb Shillinger and I send you my most sincere condolences on the loss of your Matthew. The Home of the Brave Quilt Project has as its goal to remember every individual lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts with a memorial quilt for the parents (and wife, if the person was married) of the Fallen One. It is our way of letting a family know that their son or daughter, dad or mom, wife or husband, is remembered and appreciated for the sacrifice they made for our country. If anyone reading this can help me get in touch with Matthew's family, or the family of any other Fallen, please email me. Thank you.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

For Matthew:

Thank you wonderful hero for the courage and bravery - knowing that every mission could be your last - you willingly went in and did whatever needed to be done. You would not want to be thought of as a Hero - you would say "Heck Mam, I was just doing my job" - please know that I am honored to have you as an Angel Warrior who will continue to look after me and mine. As an Army Mom, I could not be more proud of any soldier than I already am. Thank you for being one of the best that there ever was.

For the Emerson Family:
Please accept my deepest - heartfelt sympathies. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I thank you for sharing your most precious gift - your child - with all of us- he is an American Hero and you should be commended for raising such an outstanding young man who put the safety of others and his homeland above everything. May God bring you the peace you need to learn to rest again.
Proud Army Mom today and always.

I know it is not easy to understand why our loved ones had to be the ones that sacriface everything inorder to standing up and fight for what we all believe in, for what freedom stands for. We know that freedom is not free. And your son did something that few could ever do, and for this I thank you, your family and your son. My husband is on his third tour in Iraq, and even though we miss him, we could not be prouder of him and all those who serve. Your son, my husband, and the other soldier alike are the reason WE ARE FREE, and that is something to be proud of. Your son will never be forgotten. Best of wishes to you and your loved ones in the days to come.

As a Mother, as a Grandview resident - my heart goes out to the Emerson Family. I did not have the honor of meeting Matt - yet I knew who he was because I have 2 older Grandview High School graduates (Monica 1999 and Romi 2002). Matt is a "Hero". It is an honor to be from the same town where He grew up in. When I first heard the news - I cried. When I seen the American flag at half staff - I cried. When I seen all those flags at the entrance of Grandview - I cried! I am praying for Matt and his family. God Bless the Emerson's for raising such a beautiful young man!

Although I have never met you or your son I just want you to know how very proud I am of your son and the sacrafice he made to keep us free. My son-in-law is a Marine and has been deployed three times twice to Iraq, the last time he was on ground. It is because of people like your son and my son-in-law who give of themselves so that we can continue to live the lives we do. I lost my brother in the Vietnam war and I know that he would have given his life just as your son has for the same reason. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss but remeber he did not die in vain and he will not be forgotten.

To The Family of Matthew Emerson:

It is with our deepest sympathies that our family offers our condolences to you. Each time we see that one of our young heroes has fallen, it breaks our hearts. We know the pride you have felt in your son becoming a member of the military; we know the fear you felt went he went overseas; but there is no possible way we can feel what you are now experiencing in his passing. As parents of young men we always want so much for them. We dream of their futures and pray for their safety, but ultimately they make their own decisions about what they will pursue. Matthew pursued a very noble occupation, a United States soldier, and for that we are all grateful and proud.

I know it’s of no consolation right now that Matthew served his country well, but as time passes and some healing begins, please know that there are millions of people who are so proud of him and who respect his willingness to serve and protect our country. These fine young men like Matthew are few and far between, and they certainly deserve our respect, our gratitude and our unwavering support.

We offer our sincerest sympathies and deepest respect for raising such a fine, capable and noble young man.

Respectfully,

Clayton & Jennifer Plemmons

I did not know Matt very well. But we both have some things in common. We were both Greyhound football players, and we both had the same football number. He was in the military, and I am in the military. I think our personalities are somewhat the same too. We both believe in our country as well. I pray that he is resting in peace and that everything good about this American hero will simmer in the hearts and minds of all those who knew him. God Bless You

I didn't really have the chance to get to know Matt when we were in school together, but what I did know of him was that he was a great guy and a very loyal person. I am praying for Matt and his family. I know that the Lord will take care of them and wrap them in his loving arms. Thank you Matt for your loyalty to your family, mine and the rest of America. I appreciate your sacrifice and everything that you gave. You will never know how loved you are.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. To the family and friends of this brave soldier, you are not alone in your grieving. Too many of us know the pain you are experiencing. I lost my sweet little brother exactly 4 months ago and the pain is still so severe. Wear your gold star pin with pride and close to your heart. In loving memory of Cpl. I am very sorry to hear about Matt-- It seems just like yesterday we were all in school together, living out our lives as care free as kids can be. Matt passed away doing what he loved, we could all be so fortunate. He is a very honorable person. We're very proud of him, and all of his accomplishments.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Specialist Emerson. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… his family!!!

I am writing to offer my condolences to your family over the loss of your HERO Spc Matthew J Emerson. I lost my son in Iraq on May 6/2007, so I can well understand your pain of losing a loved one so dear.

When things settle down, I recommend that you contact a man named Michael Reagan @
www.michaelgreaganartist.com

He will draw one portrait of the fallen soldier. He does this for free and will draw any picture of your choosing. He has drawn presidents and other celebrities. My husband and I got one and it has helped me with the healing process. Michael is a truly gifted artist that captures the very essence of the person he draws. I look at my picture everyday and it gives me a connection that I cannot explain.

I pray you will be guided by a higher power to give you peace, comfort and strength in this time.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

are not worth comparing with the glory
