Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Anthony Kamalu Bento US Army Corporal.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

I was in Anaheim in June with my daughter and a group of high school kids for the HOSA National Leadership Convention. We stopped for Italian ice after our awards ceremony one evening. As I sat on a bench on the sidewalk, I noticed something shimmering in the dark and picked it up. It was a button pin with this wonderful young man's picture (the one on this page actually) with a black ribbon trimmed in silver attached to it. On it are the words "Never Forgotten".
I was sad for the person who lost this pin, which I know must be a treasured possession. I was more sad, however, for the pain and sorrow this young man's family will always feel at the loss of their cherished loved one.
I don't know who might see this post, but I would like you to know that in Anthony's honor I carry this button with me always. I may not have known him personally, but I will always remember him as a brave and honorable fallen hero because of the random circumstance that led me to find the button.
May God Bless All of You Who Love Him,
Jennifer

I can't believe how vivid everything still is from that Dark day in September on the other side of the world. I think of you and your family on a daily basis. I have never been able to find words to express the sorrow, regret, guilt and anger I have had implanted in my mind and heart since that day. I will always wish I could have done something more. That will never change. But on this day , pride is the overwhelming feeling. I'm proud to have known you and to have served with you. We will meet again one day. Of that I am sure. Rest in peace my brother.

Every year since you've been gone, I go see you at FT. Rosecrans and pay my respects not only to a friend but to a hero. Now since my kids have been born, I take them with to teach them the importance of remembering and what "Memorial day" is all about. I will be seeing you again on monday. Every one misses you, bro. See you soon.

Dear Bento Family: Colleen, son Anthony, Penny, and father Anthony,
In reading all the entries about Anthony, people said he had a zest for life. He gave his for us to keep ours. We are grateful for his and your ultimate sacrifice. As a member of PS4FS (Prayer Shawls for Fallen Soldiers), we would be honored to send anyone in the family who would like one a prayer shawl in memory and honor of Anthony. If anyone would like a shawl, please contact me with your address(es) and we would be honored to do that. Thank you and God Bless you all.

Mrs. Bento,
I remember meeting you & your daughter, on the morning of August 17, 2008 at Shannon Hill, VA--Day 64 of Run For the Fallen. I got there first that morning, with my daughter, and was able to relieve your worries about whether you were in the right place, but think that God, determination & good karma guided you all the way. You were meant to be there. I am tearing up now, at the memory of you telling Jon about your son, when he arrived. I have no doubt that the trip was worth it for you, and hope you two are finding a way forward. I think about that morning, once in awhile.

I don't know your family and didn't know your son, Anthony but I read your notice of loss this past September and have kept it pasted to my bathroom mirror. Everyday I pray for your family and pray that the unfathomable loss that you have suffered may in some small way be surrounded by bits of love sent by those of us so very grateful for your son's willingness to put his life on the line that we may enjoy freedom.
May your memories lift your spirits and remind you that those we love always live in our hearts.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My heart goes out to you all. I know what it is like to lose someone you love and I'm sure it is even harder if that someone is your child. I loved looking at the pictures online of the grown up Kamalu. In my mind he's still 7 on our river rafing trip and not old enough to go on the raft yet. All my family sends their love. Hi Tony
We were both shocked and saddened to hear of Tony Jr's untimely departure. How painful it must have been for you, your family and all of his friends.
While I never met him personally, I could see by what I read about him that he was really a dynamite guy - we can see that in his face. (photo in the U-T) I am curious to know if he was following in his Dad's footsteps with an enthusiasm for volleyball.
Having lost our teenage daughter we empathize with your loss. We will keep you and your family in our prayers.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Anthony's heroic story has really touched my heart. I think about you guys everyday, I have you in my prayers!!! I look at Anthonys myspace and I ask myself.. "Why did GOD take such an amazing and loving person away from you guys"? My heart breaks for you guys =(

I went through Basic, AIT, and Airborne school with (at the time) PFC Bento. He was in the Bunk next to mine with Alcorta and he was the whole platoons entertainment. Bento always had a cheezy grin on his face and did something off the wall to make everyone laugh. You hear stories about soldiers running through each others barracks waering nothing but boots, a gas mask, and equiptment vest; well he's that guy.
Always motivated when it's time to get work done and someone you can trust to have your back on and off duty. Bento was a man of faith and I learned from talking about Jesus with him, that he has a pure heart. I told him it is obvious that his parents raised him with love and he agreed. I later met his family one weekend during airborne school and they lived up to their reputation of being a great family. I fear his loss will be especially hard on his sister, who seemed to take special care to watch over him as her little brother.
To Anthony's wife, I have not had the pleasure to meet, I am sorry for your loss. He is gone and as hard as it is to accept we must. You and your son were the world to him. Even back in basic, he always talked of finding his true love, marrying, and raising a family. You need to know how proud he was of you guys and how happy you made him before he left this world. I know Anthony died a happy man. His son will carry on his name and you should stay close to his family; they are your family now too. Remember our time in this world is short and temporary. He left us early, but we will all be reunited with him in Gods Kingdom.

As many people pass through our lives, Nene was the one that I would always hold his memory close to my heart. As I walk this life looking forward and wondering how to make my mark, I tend to let go more when I remember Nene running around the house with green hair, dancing and letting loose. I only wish I had that vibrance.
While tradegy and sadness are filling your days, together you are stronger and more graceful because of his memories and the continuous laughter of his son.

Dear Anthony(and Bento Family);
1. After a visit to a relative's gravesite we were just leaving the cemetery as your honoring and reverent procession was just entering. It was apparent that you were special and dearly loved, although we did not know you.
2. We offered our prayers while pulled to the shoulder, and until directed by police escort to exit and proceed carefully.
3. I spent this morning finding out who you are - and who gave the ultimate sacrifice for country and family.
4. Thank you, Anthony and family. Eternal Rest and Peace...and let perpetual light shine upon you...

Tony, Penny & family and Colleen & son,
Gail, my children and I were extremely saddened to hear of Anthony's passing. The first thing that came to our minds was little Anthony beach camping, never walking but running everywhere, and his eternal smile. Anthony was so happy and close to both of you, that you knew he was going to be a bright and successful young man. The fact Anthony joined Airborne was a sign of his team spirit, never giving up, and his intelligence to always find a way to prevail. Tony, please wear the lapel wings I gave you as I believe Anthony would have been proud to have given you a set of his to wear. Always be proud. Remember the Airborne motto, "Airborne, All the way".

I was enormously saddened to hear of Anthony's passing. I hired Tony to work at Sunset Bowl when he was a teen and my son knew him slightly from school. I remember him as a polite, respectful young man, a good worker with a perpetual smile and I was struck by how close he and his father were. They would come in to bowl together when Tony got off work.
My son, David, served in the Marine Corps and spent seven months in Iraq and my youngest nephew is serving currently in Baghdad. I know the fear you live in while they're in danger, but I can't imagine the pain of losing your beloved son/husband/brother/father. Over the last week since I heard the news I have thought of all of you often...the father who lost not only a son, but a pal and the young widow who lost her son's father and her best friend.
God bless you and give you peace now and in the days ahead. May He watch over all of you, especially that beautiful little boy. Please know that while we mourn, those who knew Anthony are incredibly proud of his courage and heroism and thankful for his service to us all.
With deepest sympathy,

Tony, Penny, and Family,
Anthony kept all of us on our toes at Blessed Sacrament School. I'm sure he's keeping God busy with his enthusiasm and curiosity. I was just thinking about the two of you the other day and the fun we had at BSS, as well as joining you one year on your annual canoe trek. My mom called to ask me if I had known Anthony. How could anyone forget the good and bad of Anthony, he was memorable then and always will be.

Dear Penny, Tony, Mary & all - there are just no words to express our feelings about the loss of Anthony. To be perfectly honest with you, I'm angry. A void has been inflicted upon a family network so giving, so spirited, so devoted to each other and everyone who is blessed to know you. I am sure Colleen is very special to be a member of such a wonderful family. I have no words of wisdom, only heartfelt sympathy to share your grief. Anthony was a free spirit committed to something he believed in and for that, we will remember him with respect and unsurpassable pride! He had so much more to offer and so much more joy to add to all our lives. May you all find peace with time, loving family & friends, home movies, photos, and baby Kai - to keep Anthony's spirit alive and fresh. so many memories to revive - so many stories to retell - so many more times to laugh .... and to cry. God Bless each and every one of you!

Colleen, I don't know if you remember me from long ago when I worked at Latchkey. I have been curious over the past 7 years about your life, and a little bird (Julie-can't remember her last name) told me last year that you were pregnant. I am so terribly sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. Please know that even though years have passed, you and your mom made a great impact on my life, and I wish better times, strength, and much love for the both of you, and for your families. --Eleanor Palmer

Dearest Bento Family,
I returned from a joyous wedding in Switzerland to hear the tragic news of Anthony Bento. Words cannot express my pain and sorrow for the loss of this wonderful man's life. He has left an impression in my heart that will last a lifetime. Anthony was our daughter's boyfriend for most of her high school years. He was a permanent fixture on our sofa. Our dog even knew the sound of his Jeep pulling up and would wait at the door to greet him.
Anthony was our errand boy. He would gladly take our son to practice or make Jack in the Box runs. He was eager to please.
When Anthony turned 18 he got a piercing that infuriated my husband. Jim told him he could not enter the house with "that thing in his mouth". Anthony respectfully took it out every time he came over until it became too much, he stopped wearing it all together.
One day I was worried about Aleksi's turtle not getting enough sun. Anthony happliy ran off to Home Depot, purchased wood and built the turtle a stand. That stand still remains Gracie's home five years later.
Anthony was a kind and generous man. He will be missed by everyone who has crossed his path. His energy and smile will be missed forever. My condolences to his beautiful wife, his son and his entire family.

To the Bento Family,
My regrets and saddest is with you during this diffcult time. The greatest sorrow is that of a parent losing a child. But the greatest joy is that of Anthony dying for his country. I have been a Navy Wife for the past 24 Years(Ret,D'cd} and I still, at present, work with active duty personel. Each of these young men who go to war are angels and special gifts.
Thank You for Anthony and allowing him to share his gifts with the world.
Warmly,
Kathleen Davis

Anthony's story is at once sad and inspiring. As a former paratrooper and communications sergeant with the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam, I know something of war's somber reality. I also know that without men like Anthony, our country would be in dire straits. His legacy to family, friends and comrades is one of dedicated courage and selfless love. Airborne, Brother, all the way!

You're right about that smile---it drew me in immediately. I had to read about his life and service even though I knew it would break my heart. Your account was truly endearing and remarkably upbeat.
