Our grandson, Nick, was a 2001 graduate of Maple Grove Senior High(MGSH), Maple Grove, MN. This May, 2022, I was contacted by the current principal of MGSH. He had been searching for our family in order to inform us that Nick had been chosen as only the 4th recipient of the school's Legacy Award, to be announced at the annual Academic Awards Ceremony on May 18, 2022.
A beautiful plaque hangs now in the main entrance of the school that includes Sgt Nicholas Turcotte's name. Another, a family plaque, will be given to Nick's mother, Debbie Moore, as soon as it is completed. The most special moment of the evening was when the entire auditorium audience stood and applauded for Nick's service, motivation, and honor. It was a beautiful moment. He would have been proud and pleased. I know we were.

It has dawned on me that it was eleven years ago today that we experienced your funeral. I still remember the details and all of the people who came together to celebrate your life. Especially those so close to you, like Scott and the other young soldiers there as honor guards; the Eckes family who added words and music to the day; and the families of your battle buddies and your school friends who came to say goodbye.
My only regret is due to the rush we had to experience in order to make our appointment at Fort Snelling it was impossible for me to personally thank all those I so wanted to see and hug afterward. We miss you, Nickel, and we are so proud of you still. Love and hugs from your grateful Grandma!

Your mom and I were privileged to ride in last weekend's Patriot Guard Fundraiser ride at Blaine Airport. As Gold Stars we are able to do so, and there is a special area for your pictures, etc., to be exhibited, as well as a program following the ride honoring our military heroes.
For the first time, there was also a recognition of our fallen police heroes as well. Their families, as members of END OF WATCH, were also treated to recognition. Because of your affiliation with law enforcement and your plans to become a police officer, it was even more touching.
Wednesday we decorated Maple Grove's Town Green with hundreds of flags as we do each year now, and our Beyond The Yellow Ribbon organization hosts the evening music concert that now opens Maple Grove Days, another nod to your musical soul. I did not ride in the parade, but watched it in real time so I could see the marching bands. The Rotary has been giving out a Sportsmanship trophy to one of the bands, in your honor, since 2008 I believe. So, for us, it has been a NICK week. Love and miss you, Nickel!

"Let me know in my heart when my days are through, America America I gave my best to you..." - from AMERICAN ANTHEM lyrics.
I first heard this last evening, July 4, 2017, being sung by the West Point Band with vocalist Craig Campbell. When I heard his voice and the lyrics I thought of you immediately, as well as the other youngsters we here in MN have lost in recent years. You indeed gave your best, as did we. Love you always. GB

Memorial Day this year was a bit more special than normal. The Palmer Lake VFW post saluted you, Nick, and about a dozen other heroes during their annual event at Mound Cemetery in Brooklyn Center. We were invited to attend. Mom. R.j. and his girlfriend, and Papa and I attended as guests in your honor. They also treated us to lunch afterward.
Scott, Vanessa, Dominik, Hailey and Richard happened to be attending the ceremony as well so they also were invited to sit with us at lunch. It was a wonderful time for all of us as they showed your photos onscreen during lunch. We will visit FSN later this week when it is not so hectic. Miss you, Nickel. Rest easy. Soar with the eagles.

I would love more info on the mile marker 16 being run by M/M Warner in Nick's memory. It is a wonderful thing to do for Nick. He had a true love/hate relationship with running and would be honored to think someone would do that for him! As his grandmother I thank you for offering to do this.

We were privileged to meet with many of your battle buddies, Nick, Saturday night, Dec. 3rd, thanks to being invited to a get-together arranged over the past year by Chris Siebenaler, with Mark Mulder and AG(Doc) Pelton helping him out. Gen.(Ret.) Lieder and his wife also lent a hand. It was beautiful to see them all interacting and relaxed.
Of course, the 9 a.m. mass on Sunday was in your memory, and the gong you always wanted to play was featured in "My Soul in Stillness Waits", just for you. Jen put together a beautiful memorial video, shown Saturday evening for the guys. All in all, you were remembered most specially. You will be forever missed. Love from Papa and me. GB

We are in the midst of a favorite season of yours, Nick; it is autumn and the trees are gorgeous. I remember how you loved hiking thru the woods. In fact, some of my favorite photos are those Jen took during your R&R in October 2006.
Jen visited last week, again taking photos, as a walk down memory lane with you. Miss you so much this time of year but have to smile at so many happy memories you gave to us, including your enthusiasm for Halloween! Love you. :o)

Joel, Karen, your mom and I attended the MN Law Enforcement Explorers Ass'n 's 40th year convention in Rochester April 18th to award the 2015 scholarship award in your name. I still picture Scott, Joe, and you in Explorer uniforms helping at parades, traffic control, etc. And you and Joe practicing your stealth skills when you thought no one would know. I can only imagine your times at Breezy!
Joe and Mia now have two children although we have not had the joy of seeing them yet. I know you have, however. Missing you gets more intense this time of year and that's okay. It just means I love you as always.

2014 was quite a year. Your uncle Dave joined you Jan. 29th, finally losing his battle with diabetes and a brain tumor. Your stepdad became quite ill at he same time, but is now well and has survived two hip surgeries. We attended a Twins game on Military Appreciation Day so the whole Moore family finally got to see your name on the Heritage Wall. We spent time honoring you again in October at Cragun's for the annual Gold Star Family weekend. Your old Marching Band buddy came into our lives thru a chance mtg at Cub!!! Nate Fahlin, Rick Kriesel, and Ben Owens came to FSN on Dec 4th to honor you. That was special. Ridgley visits on Veterans Day and Memorial Day, thus the open Mountain Dew cans! The dreaded flu has kept us recuperating so our Christmas visit has not yet materialized but we WILL get there. We miss you but have tried to enjoy each holiday as you would, especially Christmas. Love you, Nickel!

I am sooo excited to finally be able to participate in all the events that Honor & Remember you & ALL our Fallen Heroes. I already feel better just by being here with family!!! I miss you so very much, and I still can't believe the love that just pours out over you & all the lives you touched while you were still here...My heart bursts with an undying Pride for the person you were, and I know that you will NEVER be forgotten...Thank you for blessing my life while you were here on Earth, and thank you for letting me know that you're still with us to this day! To the family of Sgt. Nicholas D. Turcotte:
As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!
Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.
As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

June was the annual MN PGR ride as usual and you were well represented this year. Jen and Adam decorated at Ft Snelling for the 4th of July while bringing Oliver and little Annie Rose to visit you. Papa and I also spent a day at our old campground visiting with Gold Star family friends. Who knew that so many years later we would be spending time there with friends made because of losing loved ones, at a place you so dearly loved. The kicker? One of your closest battle buds has a place there now too. God moves in mysterious ways. Miss you. Grandma

Joel, Karen and I went to the MN Police Explorers' annual conference 4/27/13 to present our 4th annual Nick Turcotte Memorial Scholarship award. It was even more special that a member of your Maple Grove post was the recipient this year! Your poster still hangs in the police dept wing at MG also, so you are remembered and, I imagine, inspiring some of those great youngsters. We know how you loved the Explorers! xoxo

To the family of Sgt. Nicholas D. Turcotte:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Turcotte Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Today Papa and I visited again, choosing to avoid any Holiday traffic jams at FSN. We had enough of that at Memorial Day week! Today was the first time ever that Bryan's; Jimmy's; and your sites were without flowers, or beers, or various other "gifts". There was, however, one nickel peeking out of the grass and one spent shell by your marker, so one of your buddies must have been visiting recently too. I rode for you at the annual MN PGR fundraiser ride June 16th, in the rain and all. Perhaps next year you could arrange sunshine?! Mark Mulder, J.R. Salzman, and others ran as Team Turcotte in the TOUGH MUDDER in Somerset, WI, on May 20th. They were a happy, muddy bunch... they loved it as you would have; and they are already planning on next year. So, you see, you are still touching hearts here, Nickel, and you always will. We visited you today, Nick, to celebrate your 29th birthday. It was sunny and the balloons were bouncing in the breeze. Ft Snelling doesn't appreciate the balloons, but we knew you would!
Your R.I.P. site on Facebook is bursting with messages. You have touched so many people, even after five years. I am so very proud of the person you grew up to be. Dear Family;
Project Compassion is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Artist, founder and President; Kaziah Hancock will be coming to Minnesota in a few months, approximately March 2010. She has been asked by one of your local media agencies to attend an event to honor our Country and the State of Minnesota’s fallen soldiers/heroes. We would be truly honored for the opportunity to paint a portrait of your hero to present it to you and your family. If you have already received a portrait of your hero from us, please keep in mind that we have been approved by our sponsors to paint a second portrait of each soldier as long as it is requested in behalf of the heroes Mother, Father and/or spouse. We only paint these 100% free to the families because of our sponsors. Please visit www.heropaintings.com or contact me directly at [email protected]. We would be truly honored to have a chance to learn more about each of these fine soldiers, our modern day heroes!
Very sincerely,
Kenna

Well, Nickel, tonight ends our "official" start of the hoiday season, the Feast of St. Nicholas, and, yes, your stocking has been hung in anticipation as always.
It's been a busy two weeks, getting your Christmas tree decorated and out to you along with your wreath. We finished out there on Dec. 4th, then did the lunch(this time at TGIF! good memories!) and to the movies complete with DOTS.
I've met a few more of your battle buddies since last summer. That is always good. They have no idea how much it means to visit with someone who spent time with you.
We love and miss you as much as ever, sweetie.

My heart felt like it was ripped right out of my chest all over again!! The tears-oh man!!! But, I know you're with us~I even "feel" you with me sometimes! Thank you for that~Thank you for letting me know you're still here…I love you~

Thinking of you so much lately...Thank you for the little "signs" that you are around! I miss you so much. Been going through my hope chest, little by little, and finding tons of old pictures! It puts a smile in my heart to look back at the little boy you once were, and to know what a wonderful young man you grew up to be...I couldn't be more proud!
Love you always & forever,

We have celebrated your love and life this past week, from a mass in your honor to James Bond.
Your stocking was hung in time for the Feast of St. Nicholas as always. Now we will begin to celebrate the Christmas season as best we can, remembering how much you loved to do just that. Next up, "Polar Express" and hot cocoa. The carols have been playing in my truck since Thanksgiving, loud just as you like it!
Love you always.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Nicholas, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Hello sweetie,
Thinking of you today with so much love...We woke up today with about 6 inches of snow on the ground with more to come! Shelby & I figure you must've had a hand in this beautiful snowy day! (Although it's a bit "chilly"!!)
I can't tell you enough how much I miss you~how much we all miss you. I have to tell you, Shelby has a concert tonight; she'll be playing her violin with the orchestra, dancing in a hip-hop reindeer number & then singing with her class! Last night before bed, she was talking about how nervous she is, etc..Well, this morning when she woke up, she said "Mommy, I'm so nervous! But, Nick will be with me today, so he'll bring me good luck!" Then, of course, she discovered the snow outside & decided you sent it for good luck!!
We all miss you so much~R.J. doesn't talk about it as much, but he has actually opened up with me the last couple of days, which is really great, you are and always have been his Hero...
2 years ago today, our lives changed forever...Not a day goes by that I don't think of you & miss you. But, one thing I know and truly believe in my heart is, you are in very good hands...Fly high, sweetie!
Blowing you kisses in the wind...
Love you forever,
Mom xoxoxo

I briefly knew Turcotte when I stayed at the RRP he was at for 3 days to troubleshoot the radios. We talked and found out we were both living in MG and heard about his wife and little girl. I remember how friendly and helpful he was to us. Unfortunately my camera wasn't working properly when I thought it was taking photos (film). Anyhow, I stopped by the Angel at the park to pay my respects and remembered him on Veterans Day. My prayers are always with his family.

Hi sweetie,
It's so hard to believe you've been gone for 20 months today. I miss your sweet smile...I went and sat at the "Tribute Garden" today by your brick! I threw a nickle into the "Grieving Friends" fountain for you & made a wish...The nickle that I had tucked into the sand around your brick a while back was gone today, so that's why I decided to toss one into the fountain instead! I'll just save up nickles to bring to you at Fort Snelling when I'm back in Minnesota! Actually, Shelby & I have our own little nickle collection going...
Love you & miss you always,

The river flows
We follow its turns
Through rapids and rocks
It’s energy burns
It takes us where
It mercifully goes
With calming straights
The river flows
Lakes are found
Their beauty grows
With shores abound
From rocky rows
Through still then force
It rhombs to the sea
The river flows
Like you and me
You finally have a place here in Colorado...Westminster's Armed Forces Tribute Garden...I can visit you anytime I want, it's beautiful.

We've had a busy week, Nick, first at Blaine's Blazin' 4th where we carried in the huge Perkins flag in honor of all of you, and then, of course, watching the Marching Crimson in Maple Grove's parade. No picture of you on the trailer this year, but no matter. Your spirit was there with all the bands, especially the Low Brass, trombonists for sure.
And you would love the new flagpole Jen helped install!

To the family of Sgt. Nicholas D. Turcotte:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 25 May, 2008. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “The Price of Freedom” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Sat. 24 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sun. 25 May, a “PrayerVigil for Peace” will be held. You are invited to stop by and light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one’s cross in the Memorial Garden, then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Dear Nick,
Seems like only yesterday I use to watch you in marching band parades for the Maple Grove Crimson Band. You were so young and alive and well spirited. It's sad to see someone so young and just starting to spread your wings get cut off from life here on earth. My twins, Katie and Jimmy and our little Nick thank you for serving your country in this awful war. May you be at peace resting until our promising Savoir takes you to live eternally granting you life. We'll see you someday and call you by name. Thanks for your service to our wonderful country....home of the brave.
