SFC Jonathan A.
    Lowery, 38
COPPERAS COVE, TEXAS & HOULTON -- Sergeant First Class Jonathan A. Lowery, 38, died Dec. 14, 2007, by small arms fire while on foot patrol in Mosul, Iraq. He was born March 10, 1969, the son of Winfield and Frances Lowery of Houlton. Jonathan was a 1987 graduate of Houlton High School and attended the University of Maine Presque Isle. His interest in the military began early and when given the opportunity to enlist into the Army his junior year of high school, he did. In 1986, he became one of the 'Aroostook Artillerymen' and was assigned to Bravo Battery in Houlton. His love of artillery led him to join active duty.
He served 14 of 21 years in Ft. Sill, Okla., with the 1st Battalion of the 17th Field Artillery. During his service, he had been an Intelligence Analyst, Howitzer Chief, Drill Sergeant, Senior Drill Sergeant and Gunnery Sergeant. Jonathan had the opportunity to serve on army military bases both in the United States and in Germany. He volunteered for many assignments due to his commitment to the 'Colors' and his Comrades in Arms. He was deployed to Iraq in Desert Storm and has had two deployments to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was also deployed to Kosovo in 2000 and Guantanamo Bay Cuba in 1995. His most recent duty station was Ft. Hood, Texas with the Armored Howitzer Battery which deployed earlier this year as the 3-3 ACR Task Force. Over his 21 year career, his dedication and service was awarded with more than 45 awards and decorations.
Jonathan is survived by his two sons of Cyril, Okla., Sean, 11, Dawson, 8; his father Winfield of Houlton; brothers, Winfield and his wife Janice of Guilford, Norman and his fiance Tammy of Mars Hill, N.C., Michael and his wife Caroline (Sis) of New Limerick, Lawrence and his wife Jennifer, one sister, Michelle King and her husband Clarence all of Houlton; aunts Willa Callnan of Melbourne, Fla., Norma Anderson of Vernon, Conn. and Geri Kinney of Houlton; several cousins, nephews and nieces. I can't believe that it's been 5 years since your work here on earth was finished. We all still miss you very much. Your boys are doing so good and continue to remind me of you in so many ways. May I just say to you that you would be very proud of the young men that they are becoming! Sean is already 16 and driving his car. I still remember how you used to say that you would never let him drive until he was 18. For some reason you didn't get to drive and you thought neither should your kids drive. My, Jon, how the times have changed! Dawson has grown as tall as Sean, and I do think will be taller than Sean sometime in the near future. Both of them are just super grandchildren! There is a part of you that comes out in their lives every day! Thanks for your most heroic service to our country and may you rest in peace. We thank you for a job well done, Jon.

I served with "Gunny" in Mosul and just want to say that he was a great man. Gunny always took the time to stop and have a joke with me, and for some reason he never failed to mention how great of a soldier I was. He was one of my Drill Sergeants at Charlie 1-22 and ended up in my battery in 3-3 ACR at Ft. Hood where we deployed together. One thing that always stood out was as we were leaving for Iraq, my spouse at the time was chasing the bus and Gunny stopped everything and told me "you have 10 seconds now GO!" I have not forgotten that and will never forget how much he cared for us. I am honored to have served with SFC Lowery and it is an even greater honor to say that I served in a combat zone with a legend in my mind. Gunny always has and always will be an inspiration to everything I do in my life. I love you brother.

More than a Battle Buddy,

I first met Lowery when we were assigned to Bravo Battery, 1-17th FA, Fort Sill Oklahoma in 1996. As Field Artillery men we both went our different ways. The next time I saw Lowery, he was working out at the Rhinehart Fitness Center at Fort Sill. He told me that he was selected for Drill Sergeant duty so he had to get back in the best shape he could. I told him that I was going too. we saw each other a couple of times as we marched our Soldiers through the roads of the 6000 area. When I found out that we lost him, I was also deployed to Iraq, It took me by surprise and hit me real hard because I knew the type of guy and tremendous NCO that he was and still is in my book. I feel fortunate to have known him. I think back to the times when we were young Corporals and feel very proud to know that he made a difference.

SFC Lowery,
Hey battle it’s been a long time since you’ve passed and honestly it’s really hard even this day for me to write this. God man I miss you coming into the CP and looking at me and saying “hey Jon you got time for coffee and a smoke” I could have set my watch to each day you entered our CP. SFC Lowery just wasn’t a fellow NCO but and very good friend. I still remember him telling “Jon you need to get your head on straight” SFC Lowery not only mentored me while I was a young NCO in the battery, but he also kept my spirits and motivation high when the days just seemed to go bad. I can say this much to this day I still miss him and his words of encouragement. You may be gone battle but never forgotten.

To those who remember,
SFC Lowery was my Drill SGT in 2006 and will forever be in my memory as the example of leadership. I strive every day to become a little bit more like the man that he showed me, for the 15 weeks of OUST. I know that he was a great man and I hope to become like unto him.

March 13, 2010

JOHN, THE DAY YOU WAS TAKEN FROM THIS EARTH, I WAS JUST 14KM AWAY TAKING MY PLATOON ON PATROLS ALSO. JUST LIKE ME AND MY SOLDIERS YOU SAW EVIL FACE ON. THIS DEERSEASON I SAT TWO TREES OVER FROM WHERE YOU USED TO SIT IN THE PAST IN FT COBB. ME AND JASON BENDER TALKED ABOUT YOU SEVERAL TIMES. I MISS ALL THE GREAT TIMES WE HAD HUNTING AND HANGING OUT. ME AND JASON LAUGH WHEN WE TALK ABOUT ALL THE RABBITS YOU MISSED HUNTING WITH US. THOSE WERE BETTER DAYS BACKTHEN. I TALKED TO YOUR SOLDIERS ABOUT THAT DAY AND I HAD MANY OF THOSE BAD DAYS LIKE THAT ALSO. NO ONE WILL REALLY KNOW OF THE ISSUES AND TROUBLES WE WENT THROUGH OVER THERE. SOMETIME I THINK YOU ARE THE LUCK ONE, BUT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE GREAT TIMES WE HAD AND I WILL NEVER FORGET MY HUNTIN BUDDY. EVERY DEERSEASON I SIT BY YOUR OLD TREESTANDS AND DEER STILL PASS THERE DAILY.

I can't believe that it has been two years since the day you left us. The boys and I still miss you as much as ever. Boys are doing great and growing up so much. You will always be so proud of them and their accomplishments. They have their special ways they remind me of you. Things have not been easy for them these past two years, but they have no other choice than to live with the cards they have been dealt. We think and talk of you often. As Christmas fast approaches, we will remember you as the father and son-in-law you were. We miss and love you very much.

Last time I saw you was in the PX at Sill, you were about to get off the trail and head to Iraq, You always lose a piece of yourself when you find out a buddy has fallen. Its a loss that is never over come. I served with you and Brian, and then under the CSM 6 years later, and for people to respect you the way we did over a span of that many years just shows what kind of guy you really were, While on mission in Iraq one day in 08, I found out that you were a drill sergeant for my Soldier, I was glad to know that you were still around, working through him and everyone else you touched. love ya man,, John 15:13

Hey brother, been a long time. I served with you in A 4-27, on the "rock". I was devastated when I found out. I still have a picture of an all ranks ball with you in it on my refrigerator I look at each day. I know you are where the grass is green, the sun is bright, and the fish are always biting.
To your family: I can honestly say I only served with one other MAN with the same integrity, commitment to the mission, and heart as John. My heart goes out to you as his battles are over while yours rage on. Bear faith, stay strong, and always remember, he gave all for ALL of us, but you most of all. My condolences and sympathy, but most of all, my respect.
Life is hard but living is harder.
I love you even though I never met you. John is a tribute to me each day and know I carry him in my thoughts.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It has been almost a year now since that horrible day when we got the news, and the hurt is still as bad as it was then. The boys are doing well, but missing you like crazy. We all miss talking to you, writing to you, and sending you boxes to Iraq. It still just seems like a bad dream and that you will be coming home with your unit in February. I'm sure they are missing you too. You are truly our hero, Jon. We miss you!

Dear Sean and Dawson,

Your dad was the best big brother a kid could have. We went camping and hunting together. He let me drive his car when I got my learners permit. He even let me do some of his chores. He was very good at delegating authority from a young age. I learned a lot from your dad. The most important thing he taught me was respect for our parents and family. I can see the same qualities in both of you. This wonderful gift from your father will be passed on to many people for generations to come. Your dad lives on in you, me and others who have learned from him. I will always be grateful to your father for the sacrifice that he made for all of us. He is a Hero and will never be forgotten. I know that your dad loved both of you more than words can say. I miss hearing his laugh and his mild southern accent that he gradually acquired over the last twenty years. I am glad that Grampy Lowery spent a month with you boys and your dad last summer in Copperas Cove. Grampy said that you had grown into polite young men. This was evident when I saw you this past winter. I now that your dad is proud of who you are now and who you will become later in life.

Your Uncle,

My son was Capt Rowdy Inman of the same regiment, Rowdy was killed 12/26/07 only 6 days after your son. I had the distincy honor and priviliedge of serving with SFC Lowery while we were both assinged to 1-17 FA during OIF I in 2002. He was a member of the mobile training team in Khanaqin that trained a company of Iraqi Civil Defense Corps (ICDC) soldiers. This was the first fully trained ICDC unit in Iraq, an amazing accomplishment that could not have been done without the professionalism and dedication to duty that epitomized SFC Lowery. He was a soldier's soldier, a warrior, and it was an honor to have fought along side this great man. On behalf of all the members of the Copperhead MiTT, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the family of SFC Jon Lowery. Go easy "Lizard", I'll look for on the drop zone.

Dear Sean, Dawson and Marcy,
Love you all, and hope that the good lord finds you safe and at least partially happy within the safe confines of your home. Uncle Jon loved you more than life itself, and I can see that from the way he held you two in those pictures, and the way he took care of you. Thank you all so much for your condolences and tributes. To the 3/3/ACR, we will always keep you in our hearts. Win met some of you at Bangor International Airport when you stopped for refueling on Nov 5. Jon had told you that his brother had long hair and a long beard and could pass for a member of ZZ Top, then was surprised to have a clean-shaven, shorthaired guy waiting for him. That opportunity to spend time hanging out with Jon was priceless. The package containing the flag and photo disc from the service in Iraq recently arrived in Maine and Win has been studying the faces and nametags trying to remember the guys he met at the airport. Please feel free to contact us. We should be sending you all a package with video of the funeral service soon.

Words can never convey the sorrow I have in my heart for your loss. I lost my son in Iraq in June. The wounds still run deep. I wrote the following in hopes to help mend my heart and remember my son is still here. I hope that it will help you also in some small way. This is in honor off every soldier that has given his all. the tears I will shed through the years for my son will also be shed in honor of Jonathan, another Hero to add to the list of names I hold dear to me. May God hold you and protect you.

As another soldier falls and is taken to heaven
A brother or sister will pick up his weapon
They carry it with pride and will never forget
He was family that they grieve, even though never met.

Your soldier still fights though not on this land
He sits on their shoulders as an angel at hand
He fights with a vengengence with tears and with love
To protect those from entering God's home above

Though only one Angel and so many to save
Some are called from the land of the free and the brave.
But your soldier is there to hold his brothers hand
And to show them their home in the promised land.

He'll never be forgotten and we salute him with pride
For from Hero to angel on the day that he died
Please accept our graitude for the sacrifice you now make
And from our hearts, some comfort please take.

Thanks for your words of comfort all of you. I am sure that if my mother looked at this, she would burst out crying, because uncle Jon would have apprecaited all the kind things you had said about him. May God be with you all, as you all live your lives remembering our fallen hero. I am sure that Uncle Jon is proud of you, those who he had trained, and those he knew through the roughest times.Thank you all for your support.

Jon,

Thanks for keeping me square when I first got to B 1/17. When I was a new Private and my Chief was less than interested, it was you who showed me the way around. You knew what you were doing and had a genuine interest in my welfare.

I am glad to have been close to you. For 4 years we tore it up. I still love to tell hunting stories that include you. Remember when you Jeans and I went Frog gigging and you wore topsider shoes? You always made us laugh.

I'm gonna miss you.

Thanks to everyone who came to the memorial service that our family had December 31, 2007, at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery. It was a beautiful service, and the military servicemen did an excellent job. Nothing could have been more perfect except the weather. Thanks for braving the very, very cold 20 mph winds coming off the pond onto the pavilion. The wind chill must have been in the 20's. Thanks to all our friends, family, Jon's friends, the veteran's, the Church of Christ in Cyril for the wonderful meal after the service, and to Doug Graham of Cyril Church of Christ for conducting the services. The boys and I are forever grateful. A special thanks to the Patriot Guard Riders that so willingly came to lead our procession from Cyril to the cemetery and then participated in the ceremonies also. Thanks to Cyril Police and Cement and Cyril Fire Departments. Also, a very special thank you to Cindy Pever, who sang two beautiful songs, Goodbye for Now and Heaven Must Have Needed a Hero. Both songs were very touching, and the boys liked both of them.

Here's a poem I wrote for Jonathan:

ALL AMERICAN DAD

He’s here with us
We all know that
And for his bravery
We tip our hats!

Not many people
Could do what he did
He dreamed of the military
Ever since a kid.

At a very young age
He joined the guard
Not knowing what would be
Dealt in his cards.

He graduated from Houlton
Back in 1987
He had no idea
He was heaven bound in ’07.

But to his men
He would say, “Carry on”!
There’s a mission ahead
You better be strong.

And to his dad,
His brothers and sis,
Don’t worry about me
I’m in heavenly bliss.

And to Sean and Dawson
He would weep for their souls
Boys, I’m sorry I left you
Before you were very old.

Just know that I love you
With each passing day
My star will shine on you
As you grow up and play.

So to you Jon, I say, WE MISS YOU and WE LOVE YOU, but we must carry on, and I promise your boys will always be taken care of. They don't understand everything right now, but we will talk everyday as if you are right here with us, and for some reason I think you just might be.

In honor of Jonathan A. Lowery--
Sean and Dawson's true AMERICAN HERO.

P.S. Dawson says thanks to LTC Mark Webster, whom he met on the plane from Dallas to OK City, for making the trip back to the service from the Pentagon. You are a true friend LTC Webster.

SFC Lowery was one of my Drill Sergeants and he was a great leader and trainer. He cared for his soldiers but made sure they were doing what they were supposed to be doing. America has lost a great soldier.

I know there are no words that will bring comfort to the family as my son Dane Balcon, also stationed at Ft. Hood, was KIA 5 September 2007. I look at these pages occasionally and wish I could post on each. I was drawn to SFC Lowery’s page, and driven to post, because his image projects that of commitment. Those who continue to serve in these trying times are worthy of all the praise that is directed towards them. May God bless the soul of this soldier and watch over his family.

Jonathon worked for me over 10 years ago at Fort Sill while I was there as a Captain, as things go with the Army, we move often and lose contact, however, with a bit of divine intervention and after missing a flight to Oklahoma City this weekend, I found myself sitting in a seat on a plane from Dallas right next to Dawson. I didn’t know who Dawson was as he was born after Jonathon and I had gone off to do great things for the defense of our freedom. Dawson told me he was returning from Maine and I asked if he was visiting his grandmother for Christmas, he said, “I went to bury my dad, he was shot in the war.” And then he pulled his dads dogtags (identification tags) out of his shirt from around his neck and showed them to me. I read the name and thought noway this could be the same Lowery I know. I immediately sensed his sadness and pulled out the Skymall catalog that are in every AA flight and asked him about something on the cover to take his mind off his dad. And it was very successful. For the next two hours, Dawson and I, under his direction and guidance, looked at every page of that magazine together from page 1 to 293. He laughed and was literally the center of attention as the people around us opened their copies to follow along with exactly what this eight year old boy was describing. I told his mother after the flight that I hope I didn’t owe for the in-flight entertainment. I feel that this was not just a chance meeting. Dawson’s mother and brother were sitting one row forward to the right. She was cradling on her lap the memorial flag I am sure she received at the funeral. God bless each of them!

My heart breaks as I sign this guest book of Jonathan Lowery. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family. I have known Jon for several years. He loved his job and was a courageous soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice. His sons, Sean and Dawson, loved him very much . I pray your memory will sustain them in the difficult days ahead. To live in the hearts of those you leave behind is never to die. Rest in peace and know that you will not be forgotten. You are a true HERO.

I first met Jon when he was married to my niece. Our whole family liked him. Though our family is also grieving, we offer our condolences. I cannot imagine how tough it is for our soldiers in Iraq and elsewhere, but I salute them all. His boys were his pride and joy, and they are also ours. They will grow up remembering him and loving him. May God hold Jon in his hands, and I salute him as a true HERO. He has given the ultimate sacrifice.

An honorable salute to you, hon. THANK YOU!

Can't believe you're gone, hon. I know your departure was unexpecting even for you. You were not ready to go. Sean & Dawson will now grow up without you. I'm almost sure they will follow in your footsteps and want to be heroes like their father, but I would hope that there is no more war by they time they become men. I know you will always watch over them. If you need help, you know how to reach me. I can still see hear, and feel you.
