Norm, I´m thinking of you this Memorial Day. You made me a better Soldier, and later in life I became a better family man from the example of your leadership. While you were a hardcore paratrooper all the way, I eventually caught on. I wish you were still here.

l knew Michael from OCS, class of 12/01. He spoke of his wife and Sammy often. He was a mischievous, funny guy; he always had a sense of humor. He was also an inspiring, stand-up guy who always led by example. He never criticized, only built others up. lt has been 19 years since l met him. l will always remember and honor him. He was a hero and did whatever needed to be done. God bless him, as well as his loved ones who live without him. We will see him again one day.

We are so appreciative for all your messages for our family about our son. My husband and I are going to Fort Riley Kansas for the first time to see the Memorials with Mike's name on them.

We have met many of the people that served with Mike and it has been such a pleasure. I would like to meet Major Hunt who served with Mike in Iraq.
Again thank you all for your prayers and thoughts about Mike.

May 24, 2012

This is Summer, Michael Norman's daughter. My school honored my dad along with 9 other heroes in a Memorial Day Ceremony at Yongsan Army Garrison in Seoul, Korea today. The 8th Army Band played, my 2nd grade class sang with 200 other 2nd graders, SGT MAJ Winders was the guest speaker, the high school choir sang, the ROTC color guard was there, and best of all...I gave a speech about the heroism of my dad in front of everyone. Here is my speech...

"Mrs. Jackson's class chose a hero that is very special to me because he is my dad. His name was Captain Michael Norman. My dad was here in Korea with us, but when I was 3 years old, he volunteered to go to Iraq because that is the kind of person he was. He was caring, dedicated to serving his country, and he wanted to make a difference for our family by being a good soldier. He was a Military Intelligence officer. When he volunteered to go to war, he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division from Kansas.
There are a few things that I remember about my dad. I remember how he liked singing and playing his guitar for us. I remember how he liked to match his shoes to his outfit. My mom says that he had more shoes than she does. I also remember how he used to cut and paste his own picture into pictures of my mom, my brother and I. He did this to show us that he was with us in spirit while he was away at war.
My dad was born in Austin, Texas. He grew up in a military family since my grandpa was also a soldier in the US Army. My dad went to elementary school in Italy, middle school in Germany, and high school in Texas. In high school he played football and baseball and he was a big Dallas Football team fan. My dad got his college degree from University of Texas and joined the Army in 1992.
They say that my dad was a great team leader. They say that my dad was an expert at what he did and that he always looked for ways to help others. His boss, Major Hunt, said that my dad was a serious-minded professional who liked to make people laugh. But most of all he was a family man. The Army honored my dad with many special awards for his bravery. But today I want to honor him by giving him my award as my hero and my dad."

My dad was honored today by more than 500 people. He will never be forgotten.

My heart is so heavy finding out Norm is gone. I, like others, lost touch with a great friend and just found out of the loss of a truly good man, great father, and hero to his country. I met Norm in DLI, served together in Hawaii, and suffered through OCS together. Last week I came across a photo of Mike, Sammy and I at OCS and it brought back great memories. I will always remember him and my thoughts and prayers go out to June, Sammy, Summer and the rest of his family.

I just found out. Norm was my best friend when I was stationed in Hawaii. We carpooled together, went to schools together, trained together, and soldiered together. We have lost touch in the last year or so and I guess I now know why. Michael will be greatly missed and I will always remember the laughter we shared no matter where we were. June, Sammy, Summer if you ever need anything please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. ([email protected])

Anderson High School class of 1989 celebrated its 20-year reunion this past weekend. Mike was honored and extremely missed by his classmates. He was a sweet, handsome, and genuine friend to all even then. It is clear that he grew into an even more admirable father, husband, soldier, and son. I am honored to have known him and saddened by his loss.

I can't believe Michael is gone. I just found out. Michael was a Sergeant in my platoon when we were stationed in Hawaii at the 25th ID. I'm in shock. Michael was an amazing soldier and leader. He had an amazing sense of humor and was always gung-ho. He led by example. I helped him fix his old Audi and he gave me rides to work when my car was down. Our families spent time with each other and ate together. June was always a gratious host. We didn't know Summer...she wasn't born yet. But we did know Sam who was only a few years old at the time. He was such a cute little guy. I wish I knew how to get in touch with June and give her our condolences. I know Michael loved her dearly. We all loved him.

I worked with Beverly, Michael's mother, many years ago at the Texas National Agency. She was one of my first supervisors and provided me great advise about not only work, but life as well. I remember how proud Beverly was of Michael. She always talked about what a great son he was--and he was! Beverly, I know you miss him dearly and I am sorry for your loss. I just want to thank you for having such a brave son that was willing to serve and die for the freedom that me and my family get to enjoy because of the sacrifices he made for our country. CPT Norman was one of the best officers I ever worked with. He was a man who served his country with honor and pride. I can still hear him say, " I need that right side patch". He was a good soldier and better man, and he is one few soldiers, that without them, the army and this country is a lesser place.

April 14, 2008

There is no way I could ever express in words how sad I am to find out that we all lost such a wonderful person. Mike was special to me in many ways but the first memory that came to mind was that he was the first boy I kissed when I was 11 years old. Mike and I met in Gelnhausen, Germany as 5th graders and remained great friends until he moved back to the States several years later. Many of us thought about him the day we graduated because we wished he could be there with us to celebrate but we knew he was somewhere else celebrating and thinking of us. Losing touch was frustrating but it doesn't mean I didn't think about him often. I will forever remember his goofy smile, sparkling blue eyes, and infectious laugh. Most of all, I would like his family to know that I will keep them in my prayers. When I lost my parents to cancer I took comfort in knowing there were other people in the world who loved them and would miss them. I am proud to say I knew such a beautiful, caring, and brave person.

April 8, 2008

I have just found out today about Norman and I want to leave this message to his family. Mike and I knew each other ever since we were kids and went to school together in Germany. He was and is my best friend. As with many military kids, we lost touch after he moved backed to the states and I have been searching for him ever since. Yesterday, after all my searching I finally found a trail, a small sliver of hope that I would finally after over 20 years, find my old friend and reconnect. In the past I have found all of our other friends and was so excited to be able to call all of them and get them all in touch with Norman. My heart sank today when I found out the very sad news that my best friend was lost to me and I would not be able to speak to him again. I had to call all of our friends and break the news. We all cried. I mustered the courage to call Normans Mother and express my sincere condolances and reconnect with her. I let her know that all of Mikes' old friends have been looking for him and are all very sad for losing him in our lives. Mike will aways be the guy who made us all laugh and was our true friend through and through. To see all he accomplished in his life and all the lives that he had such a positive effect on so many peoples lives. It only makes me swell with pride to be able to say that I knew Michael Norman and that he was and always will be, my Best friend. In January, our country lost a true Patriot and Hero. In January, I lost my best friend and a piece of my childhood. Norman, I will miss you man, and will never forget you! I only wish we could have talked one more time and reconnected after all these years.

Forever your friend,

Michael Bliss

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Another Fallen Hero ~

My heart breaks as I sign another guestbook of such a courageous soldier who gave his life so selflessly. May he rest in peace knowing that he is loved and remembered by those who knew him. From one military family to another, we know the pain you feel, we understand what you are experiencing and feeling. No amount of words can ease the pain of our loss and we know first hand there are no words of comfort at this time. We lost our only son 9-3-2004 at the age of 19 and it fells like yesterday. Just know that there are Marines and families across the USA who is experiencing your loss and pain. We will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes.

May God grant you peace, strength and comfort in such a difficult time. My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the entire family.

I still fly my Marine flag and have my Marine tag and sticker on my vehicles because I'm PROUD of my SON and DAUGHTER, and all the SERVICE MEN and WOMEN out there. We will always be a MARINE. We are proud of you all.

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" ~Rev 21:4

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Freedom is not free and as an American I am very thankful for every service member, and very sorrowful when one is taken. I am sure his family knows what a hero he was but I wanted to make sure you know he's a hero to me as well. I did not know him but I stood tall and silently with the Patriot Guard for him.. Just as he stood for all americans in battle.

To the Norman family I offer my sincere condolences. May God comfort and bless you. Thank you, Michael, for your courage, honor and ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. God hold you in His arms, my American Hero.

February 13, 2008

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

To CPT Norman,
I am really at a lost for words now, because you did so much for me and my family it hard to put it into words. I remember times at the pool in Hannam when our kids playing together and our wife's conversationing. It was nice getting to know you little out work setting.

CPT Norman, you always conducted yourself in professional manner with everyone you encounter. You especially helped myself and SGT Wilhoit out many situations with in our section with pin point advice and encouragement.

My family and I will miss you dearly!!!

Words escape me. Although I only knew him for a few short years, I was shocked to hear of his passing. He was my team leader at Schofield Barracks from 2000 to 2001, and I was lucky to cross paths with him again and stop by his office on Yongsan a few times to reminisce from 2005-2007.

Norm had a great sense of humor. I remember his funny nicknames for our HMMWV, and his booming voice echoing through East Range while on exercises. He had a way of making the complicated things simple, and motivating his soldiers to aspire to greater things. He led his troops with humor, humility, respect, common sense, and decency, and his soldiers will never forget his example.

My deepest condolences to the Norman family. I could not have asked for a better neighbor during my stay in Hannam Village, Yongsan Korea. He was a person who could brighten a room simply by walking in. He had a positive impact on others that his family should be extremely proud of. I am greatful to have had an opportunity to serve and live with such a great Man.

I know that God greeted him with open arms and that he will always be with you. I will keep you in my prayers to ask the lord to help you through your grief.

To The Norman Family,

I grieve with you. I was Mike's Judge Advocate when he commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment at Yongsan Garrison. He was a great man and much beloved by the Soldiers he commanded. His life was a testament to service. His life is a great loss.

CPT Norman served as my S2/Commander during my tour of duty while assigned to 34th Support Group/USAG-Y Korea. He was a awesome leader and a wonderful person. He genuinely cared about those who served under him. He always challeged us to do our best inspite of the circumstance we would find ourselves in. He was one of the funniest people I have ever met. With him it was always "we" instead of "I". Mrs. Norman and family, he loved you tremendously. There was never a time that I can recall when entering his office that you or the kids didn't some how come up in a conversation. May God bless and give you peace during your time of bereavement. And to you CPT Norman, "I SALUTE YOU" Sir I thank you for your leadership and guidance that you have given to all who have had the priviledge of serving with you.

But they wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall run and not faint.

We both grieve deeply because of the death of Capt. Norman, who was one of our late son, Bobby's[SSG. R.J.Chiomento II, KIA Afghanistan 7/17/06], closest friends. They served together while with the 82nd Airborne, at Ft. Bragg, N.C. We will keep his family's welfare before the Lord in prayer, and wish them all God's blessings, and comfort, during this extremely heartwrenching time for them all.

Mike approached every task with whim, vigor and boundless energy. Whether it was mission related, taking care of soldiers or his wife and children, he always gave 110% and set the standard for all to emulate. He will sorely missed by his wife June, children Sammy and Summer, family, friends and those of us who had the pleasure to serve with him. May God bless his soul.

To the Norman Family,

There are no words to tell the thoughts within this note today. For it seems as if the more one cares, the less the heart can say. My entire career in the Army, I prayed that I would not ever suffer the loss of a soldier, friend or leader who I personnally know.

CPT Norman was my Company Commander, S-2, and my friend. He was the first person I came into contact with as I inprocessed 34th Support Group in July 2002. I had the priviledge of watching him move up the ranks from 2LT to CPT. I can honestly say that he was always there for his soldiers and friends. I knew because he would visit with me in my office in the S-1 shop and my Hannam Village office after everyone else had departed for the day and we were still at work. We would conversate on things that were bothering us and ask each other opinions at the same time. I know that his family was all that he looked forward to seeing at the end of a long day. His office was wallpapered with drawings from Summer and Sammy; not his military achievements and accomplishments. He looked forward to the mornings when he did not have to be at PT early because this gave him the opportunity to walk with Sammy to the bus stop with his coffee in one hand. Always yelling out, "morning Sergeant T".

He would say to me to set goals but not in concrete; stay focused but turn aside to help others; follow a plan but remain flexible; move ahead but not too fast; take a bow but applaud those who had a part in your success. Pace yourself SFC!!!

He will truly be missed but I am sure that he will always be looking down on his family. The pain from lost of a love one may never go away. It's like a wound which does not heal. All we can be thankful for is the precious time that he had with us, the impact he has made in everyone's life, and the cherished memories which we all have.

Remember that he will be with you through the difficult times and you will find the strength to move forward. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathy, Naleenee Trader

To the Norman Family,

I was saddened when I heard the news today. It has been a long time since I served with Michael in B Co 1/505 PIR, but after reading many of the entries here I see he hadn't changed from the man I knew. He will be missed by all who knew him, but he will never be forgotten. My thoughts and Prayers go out to your family.

Here are a few things that I'd like to share.

He was a Soldier and a Leader that was admired by everyone who knew him. CPT Norman was always there for his Soldiers and KATUSA's that were under his command. He always made time for them and ensured that they were trained and ready.

CPT Norman was a great son, husband and father; a man who loved his parents, wife and children deeply.

CPT Norman was one of the finest Officer and Soldier that I ever had the privilege of serving with. He died doing what he truly believed in.

We will all miss him dearly!

God Bless him and the Norman Family.

CPT Norman,
I will never forget how you had the honor, the integrity, and the guts to do stick up for your NCOs/Soldiers/KATUSAs while serving as the Commander of HHC in Korea. I proudly recieved your handshakes during PT, and our professional conversations, and the freedom to help train and lead your company in Korea form 2002-2007. I am blessed that you whispered in my ear upon recieving my PCS award, stating, "Please read my personal comments about you SGT Wilhoit, on the back of this award. Thanks for taken care of the Chapel KATUSAS!"
Sir, I feel lucky to have your signature on my award and that you pinned on my rank as a Non-Commissioned Officer!"
Your picture will hang in my room forever. And you are a true hero.
My heart goes out to you and your family in these times of need. I only wish to tell your family personally how you have affected my life!

To Mike's family,
I served with Mike at Ft. Ord and in Korea. We were great friends and he attended my wedding. We lost touch after Korea but thanks to myspace were able to get in contact again. I have so many great memories of Mike and can't believe he is gone. I can't imagine how you are feeling right now but can only say how sad I am at our loss. Mike has had a profound impact on my life and I will miss him greatly. We all will.
