I worked in C-Btry 1/19th in Fort Sill, OK., as the only female civilian. SFC Hurst was on DS status. I became like a mother figure to all the DS's. DS Hurst would come down every morning before training to just talk, it was our ritual. Just as he did when he prepared to leave that final time. He told me that he was travelling to Alabama to spend Thanksgiving with his parents, and then head overseas for the war. We vowed to keep in touch with each other. He was an LSU fan, and I was an Alabama (RTR) fan, so we had lots to talk about. As the last person in C-Btry that knew DS Hurst I was given the plaque that our 1SG Timothy Wayne had made in remembrance of DS Hurst. After all these years that plaque is on the wall in my current office. I look at it everyday, and think of DS Hurst, and the talks we shared. It is still hard to believe, you are no longer here with us. We could never re-pay you for the sacrifice you made for us. A real American Hero!
Thank you for your service my friend, you will never be forgotten by The Cobra Strike Nation!

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

I first met Dave(Papa Bear) when I was assigned to C Btry 1/19th(Cobras) as a Drill Sergeant. I soon reallized that he was an out- standing Drill Sergeant, NCO, soldier, family man, and a friend; a true great american! He always came to work with a positive attitude and was always willling to help anyone out. I know he loved to play golf and he always talked of his dogs! I heard what had happened to Dave while serving here in Iraq myself. A few weeks before it happened, when I was going on R&R I had heard that Dave was over here in Iraq somewhere. When I heard what had happened I could not believe it! It was a great pleasure to have known and worked with him the two years that I did. My heart goes out to all of his family and friends! I will never forget him nor as a soldier, an NCO and an american will I let his death go in vain!

The Hurst Family,
I first met Dave in 2002, we work together in the 82nd Airborne Division Headquarters. We deployed to Ramadi, Iraq and shared living quarters. I have many fond memories of dave and our times together in Iraq and at Fort Bragg. We used to see how many Little Debby Brownies we could eat at the chow hall in Ramadi, I think he ate 12 brownies once. We would constantly call each other during the football seasons and talk about our teams, he liked the Tigers and I liked the Razorbacks. We kept in touch after he left Fort Bragg. While he was a Drill Sergeant and after He moved to Fort Polk. I will miss our future conversations together. Dave's spirit lives on in everyone he met and touched, including me. And I will carry on dave's memory as a true friend.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know David, but I am remembering

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

July 13, 2008

I knew David young in his carrier; we were in Aco 1-505 PIR. The first time we met, I was his roommates buddy and he burst into our room and started barking at us wearing a patrol cap with E-5 rank on it. Later on we learned that he was a PFC and there were jokes about that for the remainder. We built a lasting friendship and will forever call him "Brother." He used to be really attached to this statue that he bought when Aco 1-505 went to Holland and I hope it remains in his family’s possession and gets passed on. It was a white marble stature about 2' tall if I remember correctly. One of the funniest moments I remember was in Panama when David and SPC Fraise were drunk and trying to jump a golf cart over a embankment and failed to clear it. The scrapes and bandages were a silly reminder of their thirst for life. This is still sinking in for me and I have a hard time dealing with the fact that David is no longer with us. Our number seems to be getting smaller as we consistently go to do our duty. One of these days we will get together and have a moment to remember those of Aco 1-505 PIR that stood proud and ready for the Honor of our God and Country.

To the Mother, Father, Wife, and Brothers of David:

I have known David for 13 years we were Pvt’s together in A Co. 1-505th PIR, 82d ABN. We served together in Hawaii in the 25th ID. We were roommates even in BNCOC down at Ft. Benning. And again back at Ft. Bragg we were roommates there until his wife arrived. We went up in rank together; we almost had all the same duty stations together.
He was a true a brother, friend, and one hell of a good NCO.
At times David was one of the more level headed people I knew. (It took practice for him) I don’t know how many times David saved me from making a bad mistake because I was so focused on one thing that he saw something else coming and he would pull me back and say. “Wait a minute, relax a second. I’ll handle this for you. You’re too spun up! Go have a smoke; I’ll meet you there in a little bit.”

I’m at a loss for the sadness that I feel. Words can not describe this whole in my hart.
I greave with you, he will be truly missed.

On behalf of my family, I would like to extend our deepest condolences and gratitude for the sacrifices made by SFC Hurst and his family. I served with SFC Hurst while we were assigned to C Co 1/19th FA in the capacity of Drill Sergeants. SFC Hurst was a outstanding trainer, which naturally led to being an excellent Drill Sergeant. He was an excellent example for peers and superiors alike to follow. He was truly an inspiration to all that he met and worked with. I am certainly proud and honored to have worked with such a high caliber Soldier and thankful to have my life touched by this incredible human being.

My name is SPC Matthew Foxworthy, I had the privilege or being a recruit under Drill Sgt Hurst in march of 2006 Charlie 1-19. he was a great inspiration to me. he was very serious about his duty training soldiers. he was not a man of many words but when he spoke you listen and take in what he said. he helped instill a discipline in me that has made me successful here in Iraq today. so I just wanted to say thank you for the time and care you gave to your soldiers and to his family I am sorry for your loss he will be missed by many.

To the Hurst family: When I served with the David in the G-3 of the 82nd Airborne Division I stepped into a monster of a challenge. David made all the fixxes possible, easy and manageable. He had a tremendous can-do attitude without ever getting very excited. He was a leader, a warrior, a great paratrooper and above all cared deeply for his family. I recall conversations with him out back behind the EOC. He was a great Soldier and will be missed. You will be in my family's prayers. God bless and remember he's in God's presence now.

I worked with Ds Hurst for a little while and in that short time he helped me alot. When I first started out as a DS, he would come and check on me, and make sure I was squared away. Even though we were different in many ways. DS Hurst would always make it a point to check on me. You would be hard pressed to stress this man out, he's got guts and no fear. I will never forget these words "are you good man"? and "if you need anything let me know". My prayers go out to the family. God Bless. Psalms 18:8

David was a close friend to us while we were stationed with him and Lindsay in Florida and Oklahoma. I was just in Iraq a few weeks ago and I really wish I would have bumped in to him. David was always kind and loving and touch many of our hearts. He is certainly missed. My thoughts and love are with you and the rest of the Hurst family during this time.

To the family and parents of David I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.
