I still remember holding your hand as you slipped away in Iraq. I was with the team that fought with everything to save you. Something about you just touched my soul. I now find myself stationed at the very location of your final resting place. I will visit and pay my respects. You are not forgotten. Mosul Medic......

Staff Sgt. Textor family and friends,
My name is Petty Officer Davis. I did a tour in Iraq in 2008. I was attached to Combined Joint Special Task Force Ballad. After hearing what happened which wasn't very specific. I found his Bio. I read that he had quite a few children some adopted. Five I think.. It was hard to imagine his family's grief. I had my first son on the way then. To lose someone so active and giving..
I volunteered to be part of David's color-guard. We practiced 3 times a day to ensure we were able to give him an appropriate send off. I was the one who folded his flag. Each fold was perfect and our salutes were sharp and steady. We were flawless. I never did anything like that before but I wasn't nervous at all. It was an honor. To this day when I hear morning colors, I think of David and that day. I hope his family has found peace and his memory remains crystal clear. Thank you for your service, David.
Very Respectfully
IT1(IDW/AW) James M. Davis

I am the medic who held his hand and stayed with him the night he passed. Something about him touched my heart forever. He is greatly missed. I had a memorial bracelet made in his honor and actually gave it to Dierks Bentley at a USO concert he gave on the Fourth of July at Ft Hood, Texas a few years back. He was speechless. Never Forgotten! God Bless his family and fellow "Green Berets".

I was a medic on duty at the hospital in Mosul when he was brought in. I had never met him before, but something about this incident stuck with me, and made me cherish life even more. I held his hand, prayed over him, and stayed with him until he was put on his Hero flight back home. You are not forgotten SSG Textor......

I am the nurse who received SSG Textor in the emergency room in Mosul. That night, I was praying that the medic, physician, and I would be able to perform a miracle. But I can now see by everyone's testimony that the real miracle was just the honor and privilege of having someone like SSG Textor in their life, if even for a brief moment. I know it's more than a year later, but I want his family to know that he hasn't been forgotten.

I served with David and was with him in the truck in Iraq. He was not only one of the greatest soldiers I have known but his heart was huge. David was a true friend and was very commited to his team and his family. People like David are very rare and I am glad to have known. Serving with Dave made an impact on my life. He was always trying to improve himself and always was willing to train others on the team, even if it took a lot of his time. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't think of that day. To the family of David, my heart goes out to you and I will never forget Dave.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

To the family and parents of David I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I would like to forward my deepest condolences to the family of David, his wife and children. I served with David during his tenure in 2-1 SBCT, Fort Wainwright, AK. I remember how excited he was to going to SFAS. He was a great Soldier and always put a smile on his face. He will be missed.
This was taken at the EIB site on Ft. Wainwright just after we all just got back from Ranger School in 2004.

Textor and I were Privates together in the 2-1 Scout Platoon and I’ve known him since 2002. First off, a bonafide American Hero doesn’t even begin to describe Textor: he set the standard in everything he ever did. If you go to the headquarters company building for the 2-1 Infantry battalion there’s a door that Textor painted a Ranger tab on, after the first time he painted it he said it didn’t look good enough and he kept redoing it until it looked exactly how he wanted it to. The pride Textor took in everything he ever did was just nothing short of exemplary. He was always good in the field. In fact I can remember Textor being next to me during the most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done: the road march at the end of the Pre-Ranger course on Ft. Wainwright. Whenever we would stop I would look for someone to exchange the 240B weapon system with and Textor was always there, but then I would get his AG rucksack and it seemed like it was just him and I exchanging the heaviest rucksack for the heaviest weapons system for the last 6 miles. Indeed everyone was shouldering their fair share because by the end there were only 11 of us that finished and the instructors never let a heavy rucksack or weapons system on the truck with the fallouts, but it was Textor who really inspired me to finish holding my head up high because just looking at him I could see the pride he took in representing our Scout Platoon at the Pre-Ranger course. He will truly be missed but he will never be forgotten because the inspiration he gave to people like me made us better. I can honestly say I’m a better person because I knew David Textor. God bless him and his family, you’re in my thoughts and prayers.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SSgt. David W. Textor our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for David. And to David it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. David, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to David’s family and loved ones.

My thoughts go out to Dave's entire family. This is a tragic loss to everyone that knew him. I do remember spending a lot of time at the Textor house over the summer vactions from school. I remember riding bikes back from chuck and mollies with karin and kellie, and dave was on my handle bars and we dumped it big time. He was a tough guy, but definately a family guy.

And carried our sorrows."

May you find comfort and strength, in the beautiful memories of times spent with David and quietly and gently, may healing come, with each new day.
You are in my thoughts and my prayers.
