Flu, not a day goes by that I don't think of you. It's hard to believe it's been 13 years since you were taken from this world, but I can remember our last conversation just like it was yesterday. I love you brother, and I wish I could have done more, and for that I am eternally sorry.

Hello, a banner of Sgt. Hasenflu hangs along Main Street in the small town of Butler, PA. As I was waiting at a traffic light I saw Bill's picture. I googled his name and was lead to this site. I'm saddened to hear of his loss. I was touched by all the condolences left as tribute. I pray that God eases the pain of all he left behind. Bill will be waiting for you in God's own perfect kingdom where eternity awaits us all. God bless you all.

I deployed with Sgt. Hansenflu to Bagram Airfield with the 805th Military Police Company from August 2003 to May 2004. He was one squared away solider. He and I got along great, I had a nickname for him, Sgt. Haagen Dazs! I am sorry he is not with us anymore. He was a hard charger and a damn good man.

No words of mine could ever express the way I feel about "the Flu". Having served along-side him in both Iraq and Afghanistan, I had the true privilege of knowing this great soldier and patriot in a way many others might have missed. In my heart he will always remain the tenacious warrior who proudly stood between his men and any danger that would threaten their existence. Rest in peace brother, you will never be forgotten.

To the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sgt. William Hasenflu, I would like to send my deepest sympathy and condolences. I never had the privilege of meeting this brave man but I am the mother of Pfc. Chad Trimble, he was also killed in Afghanistan on May 28, 2008. He was from Ft. Campbell, 101st Airborne,1/61 CAV. I know first hand the pain and sorrow you've gone through. People have told me things get easier with time. I still have a hard time believing that. The initial shock from the devasting news may have been lifted somewhat but they still will be missed deeply everyday, forever. I can only say our soldiers are America's true heroes and will never be forgotten. "All gave some,
some gave all". God bless your awesome soldier!!

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

William, god bless you soldier and thank you for your service to a grateful nation, forever we will mourn you and those fallen service members both before and after you. On 5/6/08 my nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward was KIA in Iraq while on a routine patrol. My promise to him was that I would never forget him but also those fallen before and after him. When I made that promise to him the day we laid him to his final resting place I did not realize how often I would need to make entries on Legacy and it just breaks my heart knowing that so many other families have and will continue to feel the pain that our family has endured. To the Hasenflu family please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another we will never forget William!

And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor

My first memories of you were in the third grade. I can remember playing on the monkey bars at recess and passing notes back and forth through grade school. You were always so much fun. Then we were in band together up through Senior High. I can remember you and Jason hanging out and walking home with you guys after school. You had blonde curly hair then.
You were a good friend, better than we all knew. A great kid and obviously a wonderful man. Thank you for being a part of my life and for protecting it by your valuable service to this county. I will keep your beautiful wife and daughters as well as your mom and dad in my prayers.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Sgt. William Hasenflu our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for William. And to William it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. William, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to William’s family and loved ones.

To the family and parents of William I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you

I first met Has or Flu as we sometimes called him at reception at Ft. Knox. when I came in three years ago. We trained together throughout the summer and on weekends I had barbecues with him and his family in a school bus he converted into a camper with his own hands. I had the pleasure of meeting his wife, Judy, and his three daughters Ashley, Savanna and Veronnica as well. The girls used to play in my car while the grown-ups talked (they called it the batmobile).
Bill and I reported to 1-61 squadron at Ft. Campbell the same day and we deployed to Iraq at the same time. I used to see him every other day at FOB Rustamiyah.
After we returned, I shared Thanksgiving dinner with him and his family at his home.
I still can't believe I will never see him again. My prayers are for him and his family.

Thank you Billy for doing such wonderful things for our country. Your dad and my husband worked together and we will never be able to thank your family for all you have done to protect our country. Your dad worried all the time about you and your family. Make God watch over you now. God Bless your Family

Our most heartfelt condolences go out to the Hasenflu family. Words cannot heal the pain of losing someone so dear. May god give you and your family the strength to overcome the pain you are experiencing. Our son, Gary was in the platoon with Sgt Hasenflu in Zormat. He has had so much praise and admiration for all of the NCOs in the platoon and felt he was with the best of the best. We hope you are able to take some solace knowing that he has passed on his spirit, knowledge and love of country to many.
Hoorah,
The Shannon family

To one of my very best friends growing up, my brother, and my neighbor. You were such a big part of my life as a child. We had great times together. Playing in the ravine catching critters, thinking we were great on the rings attached to the tree, and yes the big-wheels. We got in soooo much trouble with those big-wheels. How did we ever manage riding those bikes off the neighbors roof and onto the grass without getting hurt?! Those were the good times growing up. I love you and will never forget you in my heart. You have always been a brave person in life. May God take care of you in heaven and take care of your loving wife & three daughters. God Bless You

Bill, Your Dad is my dear friend. When I heard the news, It hit me right in the heart as your Dad really loved you. He was real proud of you and concerned over the last few months about your well being. I could see it every time I was with him. I would like to thank you for giving your all for our Country. We all are very grateful and I will remember you. May God bless you and your wonderful family.
