Marquis,
My Brother I miss you everyday that you are not in my life. I know that it has been quite a while that you have been gone, but I don't see me ever forgetting you. You were there for me when I need a friend and made me realize my life was worth living during the hardest challenge of my life. I pray that God has you by his side realizing that he has one of the Best, Man and Marine he has ever created. I know you will be looking down on all you loved and I cant wait to see you again in a better place. Love you forever brother. Michael Yonko

I spent some time wondering why I couldn't get a hold of you. I just found out today even though I had a clue for some time. You were a great personal friend, fellow Marine, and I miss you. Semper fi, and fair winds and following seas in your rest brother. I'll see you on the other side.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Porter Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

I havent seen Porter aka "The Domenican" as we called him in a while but he was the last person i saw before i left for california and he was there for me through thick and thin the entire time i knew him we both helped eachother out a lot and ive grown so much because of him and i miss him dearly. He was one of my best friends a great mentor and an amazing sgt who never left you hanging he treated me like a brother and ill never forget that. I still remember the last time i talked to him right before he left for iraq we talked like normal we discussed relationships and the marine corps but the thing that hurts is that we planned to hang out when he got back just like old times and now well i guess ill have to wait i miss you bro and cant wait to see you again

Marquis, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and please know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Marquis and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Porter family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Marquis and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

I first met Sgt Porter upon my return to 2/10 in April of 2008. His eagerness to inspire and get to know his fellow Marines was amazing and he was a close friend of mine. I was baffled and in disbelief when I heard of his passing. I remember our time in 2/10 and our time in NYC during Fleet Week 08 as some of my best memories. My condolences to his family. He was a great Marine.

I had the pleasure of meeting Marquis at his 10th high school reunion (and my 25th). He was the only member of his class to come, but that didn't seem to bother him. We made him an honorary member of the BCDS class of '83. I am so sorry to learn (today) of his death, and I know that his family, friends, and anyone he met will miss him.

I haven't seen Marquis since High School but I always loved to hear updates about his time in the Marines through the BCDS alumni updates. I haven't talked to Marquis in while, but I thought about him every time there was a story about the Marines, and I worried about his safety. I remember his warm spirit, and his inconceivable jump shot. I will never forget Marquis, and I know that he had that kind of effect on lots of people. My thoughts and condolences to his family and to the many, many people that will miss him. I know I will miss him.

Sgt Marquis,

I remembered when we were on the BCDS wrestling team together. You were a great team player and always made the grueling practices more enjoyable with your Gung-Ho attitude. I never felt threatened or intimidated by you. But felt a strong sense of camaraderie. Though we both thoroughly hated piggy backing teammates up those awful school stairs. It was eased with the pleasure of being in your company and especially having you as my teammate. May you rest in peace.

The news of this loss was one that I hoped never to hear, and my thoughts are with everyone who loved Marquis.

I first met Marquis in the beginning of seventh grade, and we remained friends throughout both middle and high school. To serve his country as a Marine was his dream for so long, and I remember how strong his drive was to attain his goal. He worked hard for it; his dedication was without parallel. On top of that, he was simply a good guy, and possessed the sort of natural kindness rarely seen in the day to day.

Our senior year in high school, Marquis went to bat for me in a way that was very much a sacrifice on his part - it was an utterly unselfish act of generosity. To him it wasn't a big deal, but 11 years later it stands out very clearly from the rest of my blurry high school memories. It meant a great deal to me then, and it still does.

What I loved about Marquis was how impervious he was to teenage drama, how everyone around him could be absorbed in high school melodramatics while he remained unruffled. Marquis was quite assured in his desired path, and he tread upon it, unhindered and surefooted.

Marquis will be sorely missed. He touched many, many people, and accomplished so much in a short time.

My heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends.

Jason Lederer

January 22, 2009

I usually don't write in forums like these. But I feel I need to this time.

I lost touch with Marquis after high school, but always got updates about him through my friend Jason, who was best friends with Marquis. I heard about him getting married, his daughters being born. I even was lucky enough to see him a few years ago when Marquis was back in town visiting and I was with Jason. After Jason moved to Israel to join the army (something he thought long and hard about and really believed in for all the right reasons), I slowly lost touch with him too. But when someone you care about is putting themselves in harms way, you always think about them... especially in times like these. Marquis was as Jason said, the best kind of people America has to offer. Warm, caring, a huge sense of humor and completely dedicated to trying to do the right thing, whether for his family, himself, or his country. The loss of someone like Marquis is truly all of our loss. He will be missed by many and my thoughts are truly with his family and closest friends during this time of incomprehensible tragedy. I am sitting here in complete disbelief and sadness. I am so sorry.

I also went to Beaver with Marquis. It's been a long time since I was in contact with him but he was a good friend and all around wonderful person. It was heartbreaking to hear this news. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

January 22, 2009

Marquis came from a small high school where everybody knew everybody. I remember taking the train with him twice a day. A long ride sometimes, where we would love to talk about music and movies, and i just remember him laughing a lot.
I remember playing video games with him and friends, before there was War, when all that really concerned us was girls.

Every Spring another class would graduate, and one of my most vivid memories of my time spent at that school was Graduation Day 1998. The pamphlet for the final assembly that year listed the class and next to their names were the various four year colleges that they had been accepted to and would be attending. I remember looking at all the schools, and then seeing Marquis' name and next to it USMC. He always wanted to be a Marine.

I just got off the phone with another alumni of those daily train rides. Memories slowly came back, and days and nights I had completely forgotten about came back in vivid color.

Marquis, you will be missed.

May God hold Marquis in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

I am sitting here at work with tears having heard the news this morning about Marquis. We went to high school and graduated together. For those 4 years that I knew Marquis, he had such a light in him. Digging out the memories of him from those years, I I remember his true passion for someday going into the military. And I remember his quest for learning and always having questions in class. I remember getting on a bus - it must have been our first week or so of high school - and feeling utterly lost. Marquis reached out and offered himself as a friend. I didn't know him especially well throughout those 4 years but I know he was so dedicated and thoughtful, loyal to the end for his friends. I am so so saddened by him not being here on this planet to continue his quest and questioning. My heart and prayers go out to his wife and daughters.
Jason, I am thinking of you as well. Please be safe; Marquis' girls will need you to share your memories of their dad with them.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Sgt. Marquis R. Porter our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Marquis. And to Marquis it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing terrorist forces in Iraq. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Marquis, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,405 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Marquis’s family and loved ones. Semper Fi !

He was my best friend and I can’t believe I will never see him again. I want people to know how good a person Marquis was. When his mother was dying Marquis took care of her, changed her, fed her and then buried her. Not because he had to but because it was the right.
We use to talk and argue about everything, that’s what made us so close. We argued about race, religion, politics, education and war. He was black I am white but he was like a brother to me. He called my mother Momz and phoned her on mother’s day and Jewish holidays just because he cared. And we all cared about him.
Sometimes I stop to think what 4722 people really means. Families that will be broken forever, children like Marquises that will never see their father again. Now I understand how big a number it really is.
I moved to Israel in 2005 because I’m a Zionist. I joined the army because I knew the war on terror was my generations’ war and I was not going to sit on the sidelines. Marquis was so proud of me. He was the soldier the army wishes they had more of. He made other people better, he cared about others and he wanted the world to be a more civilized place.
His first baby was born when he was in Iraq in 2003. They named her Victoria as in Victory. His loss is truly ours because he was the best kind of people America has to offer, people like Marquis are smart and willing and most importantly kind, with the motivation to join and fight for a greater cause.
He was 17 years away from retightening, a long time in army standard but that doesn’t matter now. It doesn’t matter that he wanted to go to college, it doesn’t matter that he wanted to be close to his kids and see them grow up and teach them to read and about the world. He understood the importance of education and he knew the value of knowledge, that’s why he wanted to be a teacher. None of that matters now because Marquis Porter is no longer with us.
He inspired me and he was part of the reason I took up arms. As much as I though about it I knew I did not want to go to Iraq. Marquis did, he followed orders and did what he was suppose to because he knew what it was to be a soldiered. He gave what he had to; I just don’t understand why it had to be his life.
