Sue, Thanks for introducing me to your amazing son, Bob. Everyone agrees that he was a great person with a good heart and silly sense of humor! I am sorry to have missed that. His service to the country will always be remembered and respected. Heroes are never forgotten. I know that is not terribly comforting when you are missing all the potential life he had in front of him, but any form of honorable immortality is something. He lives on in all of us - either in memory, or in memorial. Hugs always. Love, Leah & David

Bob,

Here we are September 11, 2011 and I find myself missing you so much. I'm going through pictures of you, reading stories posted on various websites. I'm going to visit you in a little while and I'm sure your mom is there with Paul and maybe some of your friends. I still can't believe it's been almost 3 years since I last saw you for grandma's funeral in September 2008 and saying good bye to you was hard. On March 15, 2009 when I heard the news and still want to wake up from it and hear your voice and get a hug or hear one of your jokes, just one more joke or comic routine of yours. Who would have thought grandpa would out live you by a few months and in June he joined you and grandma. I love and miss all of you so much.

Dear Howard and Sue. I just heard today of the loss of your son Robert. Words cannot express the sadness I feel right now. We haven't been in touch for quite some time. The last time I saw Robert he was wearing pull-ups. Even so, the pain I feel in my heart over his loss is huge. At times like these it is importatnt to remember being blessed with his life for the past 24 years, all the joy he brought to you both, your parents, his aunts and uncles and, from what I just read on-line, his many friends. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

To the Weinger family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Roberts' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Robert, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and please know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Robert and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Weinger family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Robert and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Since the loss of my nephew I have written on every single legacy page of every fallen soldier and included a photo of my nephew. I encourage you to do the same to Aaron's page. I have done this to honor my nephew but to let you know your loved one is not alone and my nephew is with him and they are now in God's gracious hands waiting for us to join them one day. From the bottom of my heart please except my sincere condolences and may the memories of your Hero carry you through each day for he will never be forgotten!

Dear Weinger Family, i remember your son and my son playing soccer in high school. bob played keeper. i was a goalkeeper coach that gave bob some pointers. when bob got the ball he would almost always give the ball to my son. they had some good times playing. I was also at the village board meeting in 2007 that your family was at. out of all the people at the meeting i was the only one that i remember that said, ' thank you sir ' and shaked his hand. I wish i could shake the hands of the parents of the bravest hero i know.

To the parents and family, I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to heal you as He gives comfort to you today and for the rest of your lives.

It was with great sadness that I heard of Bob's death in Afghanistan. Bob was the third generation Weinger that I knew. Your mother then so kindly brought the vehicle registration forms to the Clinic in North Chicago to me. May you be given strength at this difficult time.

Final Roll Call

Did you hear the sad news today?
A brave American Soldier, SGT Robert Weinger has passed away.
Called by the Supreme Commander over all.
Today he has made his final roll call.

Come Brothers-In-Arms; let us reverently bow and pray
For our valiant comrade, who has fallen this day.
We’ll drape his casket with a banner of beautiful hues,
Those glorious American colors: red, white and blue.

That star spangled banner he gallantly fought to defend,
Unyielding and undaunted, he fought to win.
He fought bravely and he fought his very best.
Now the Supreme Commander grants him, “eternal rest.

With dignity and honor, we’ll commit his body to the ground,
The bugler will sound “Taps” and we’ll fire the volley rounds.
The final military honors we’ll render somberly and ever so sadly;
“Old Glory” we’ll solemnly precisely fold and reverently give to his family.

Each Memorial Day we will recall Robert’s name,
And attest that his supreme sacrifice was not in vain;
For this lasting legacy he gave to all generations;
“It’s honorable to respect our flag and to defend our great nation.”

So close ranks fellow warriors, for our ranks are thinning.
We must keep on fighting and keep on winning.
With pride and honor we’ll march and stand tall,
And we’ll proudly - proudly - salute “Old Glory”
‘til we join Robert at our final roll call.

Farewell SGT Robert Weinger - Be At Ease; Rest In Peace

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to SGT Robert Weinger our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Robert. And to Robert it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Robert, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Robert’s family and loved ones.

I am Deeply Saddened to learn of the loss of Sgt. Robert Weinger. The Price this Brave Young Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.

May Robert Rest Safely now, in the Loving Hands of God and may the Healing Grace and Comfort of the Lord be with the Weinger family.
