Gregory Fleury Obituary

Cpl. Gregory M.W. Fleury, 23, of Anchorage, died Oct. 26, 2009, in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

A funeral will be at noon Friday at First Baptist Church, 1100 W. 10th Ave., with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. A private interment will be held at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Greg was born Oct. 4, 1986, in Sitka, and raised in Anchorage. Greg was part Athabascan, Tlingit, and Choctaw.

Greg was a young man whose life was dedicated to helping his family and friends.

Greg joined the U.S. Marine Corps on June 6, 2005, and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif. During his service he was awarded the following medals: Air Medal, NATO Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal, Global War On Terrorism Medal, Sea Service Ribbon, and the Combat Air Crew Badge.

His grandfather said, "We called him 'Spike' because when we were building our cabin, his job was to hand up the 16-inch spikes for the walls."

The Fleury-Flygare family is thankful to all the people who have wished us well, and honored Greg for his services to his country. Greg loved Alaska and carried the Alaska State Flag with him up to and during his last flight. We will miss him greatly but we will remember him always."

Greg is survived by his mother, Donna Fleury-Brown; dad, Christopher Flygare; siblings, Stephanie, Jenny, Crystal, Constance, Nicholas, Jerrod and Brandon; grandparents, Albert (Linda) Fleury, and Sally Fleury.

He was preceded in death by great-grandmothers, Leona Turner-Fleury and Alma Moses-York.

In memory of Greg, his mother would like to have forget-me-not flowers planted each year as a reminder of those from Alaska who are currently serving in all branches of our military.

Arrangements are with Legacy Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Witzleben Chapel, www.legacyalaska.com.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Fleury Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Gregory M. W. Fleury US Marine Corporal. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. Fleury and Family,
Not a week goes by that I don't think about you and my other brothers. I want you to know I will never let you be forgotten and the sacriface by you and your family. I am giving a speech tomorrow and it will be a eulogy for you. I will be sure that people meet you and your memory for the rest of my life, Greg. Ms. Brown and family, Greg was the hardest and most precise worker I ever met. Often, if we were on the line and he was walking toward me I would turn and go the other way because I already knew he wanted me to fix something that was wrong...I love you Fleury and you WILL never be forgotten! The days are coming to a close marking the year that you've been gone and not a day goes by that my husband doesn't think of you. I was not fortunate to have gotten to meet you in person but I can't tell you how many great things everyone still has to say about you. You have given more than anyone could have asked for to your country, your friends and family, and to your brothers in the corps. Your memory lives on in our household forever Greg. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Greg... you weren't the one who was supposed to die, remember? We worked so hard together to get there, to get in shape, to keep going, to get you that 4th pullup. Gunny riding you, those extra runs with me and Kiwi to get you there. You were the heart, all heart, stubborn stubborn heart of our group. We were all were supposed to come home, hang up our boots, and drink like we used to when we were all just poolies. Remember when we were drinking... you'd be 4 sheets to the wind... and someone would either call you or refer to you as "Fleury", Lord Have Mercy... you HAD to let us know EVERY TIME that "my name is GREEEGORY not fluuuerry" ... I miss you. I'm sorry I wasn't there for your funeral, I'm coming to see you this weekend. I love ya man. I really do.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

To the family of Gregory our sympathy and prayers go to you. Heroes and their families should never be forgotten for without them we would not have the freedom we have. My name is Betty Nielsen the founder of Freedom Quilts a non profit organization that makes quilts to honor our heroes and give them to the parents of our heroes that have died. It would be the greatest honor to design and make a quilt to honor your son. I design each quilt with honor and respect to our fallen soldiers and respect for the family. I take pictures that you send and put them on the quilt along with their hobbies and sports and anything else that you wish on the quilt. The quilt is a gift from us to you it is my way of honoring this wonderful young man and his family. If you would like to contact us to receive a quilt then here is my email [email protected] and my website is www.freedomquilts.net I start this project after 9-11 and now over 8 years I have continue it for our fallen soldiers families. My deepest condolences on your tremendous loss. My son is in the Navy and while the Navy is different than the Army, other military families share your pain. Without brave and unselfish men like Cpl Gregory Fleury, I would not have the freedom I enjoy every day. It's my duty now to thank him and pay respect to him and his family for their ultimate sacrifice. I've never met Gregory but I can tell he was a truly remarkable young man. Be proud of him. God bless you in your time of need and bring you peace.

November 15, 2009

I was deeply moved by the story of Gregory Fleury as heard on NPR. My own son, age 15, is similarly tall, lanky, silly and plays violin. He's too young to serve and probably won't be risking his life the way your son did. Nonetheless, Gregory's story really struck home and my heart goes out to you.

November 13, 2009

I am thousands of miles away from your family, but want to let you know that I share your pain at the loss of your son just the same. Be well.

Follow The Rainbow To Heaven.
=======================================

A Soldier had die out on the
battlefield;

Broken hearts are weeping For
Them,

But take comfort of knowing
that God had sent Them a
rainbow from heaven;

The Souls of the Soldiers
have gone to there home
in heaven,

Our Loved One's has follow
God's lovely rainbow in the
sky;

All the way to the end of the
sky.

That leads all the way to the
other end of the Lord's
house in heaven,

So just keep on praying and
trust that God will send us
that same rainbow in the sky;

Where Our Loved One's are
waiting For You and For Me at
the end of the rainbow in
heaven.

Greg,

I will always remember you as that fifth grade boy on my bus in elementary school. Even though we were in JROTC together in high school, when I think of you, I always see that elementary kid walking home just a few feet from me.

You are such an amazing person, and everyone will remember that. I remember running next to you on your PFT when you were in training for you physical tests for the Marine Corps. And I will never forget how you were the only person who not only had to sing Teapot in the ROTC room on your birthday, but you gave a wonderful rendition of "Row, Row, Row my Boat" while on a rolling chair. You made us all laugh.

You will be missed and your service will never be forgotten. To you family, I send my warmest wishes and prayers and the reminder that Greg touched so many lives and will be remembered.

Another Fallen Hero ~
My heart breaks as I sign another guestbook of such a courageous young man who gave his life so selflessly. May he rest in peace knowing that he is loved and remembered by those who knew him. From one military family to another, we know the pain you feel, we lost our only son 9-3-2004 at the age of 19 and it fells like yesterday. No amount of words can ease the pain of our loss and we know first hand, there are no words of comfort at this time.
Just know that there are families across the USA who is experiencing your loss and pain. Our sons grew up, chose to serve our country and in that moment became a hero, a patriot. Their legacy will remain as such. We will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes.
May God grant you peace, strength and comfort in such a difficult time. On behalf of the Valdez-Perez family, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to your entire family and loved ones.
I am truly thankful and grateful for the true dedication and bravery in protecting and serving our country from you son. You are a True American Hero.
We still fly the Marine flag and have the Marine sticker on our vehicles because we are PROUD of our SON and DAUGHTER, and all the SERVICE MEN and WOMEN out there. We will always be a MARINE. We are proud of you all.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Cpl. Gregory Fleury our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Gregory. And to Gregory it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Gregory, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Cpl. Fleury and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of freedom and liberty. Sadly, America has lost one of its finest heroes, the U.S. has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage, which they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Cpl. Fleury has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends, of Cpl. Fleury, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to carry on. Just as you were always with him when he was deployed overseas, know that he will always be with you wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Cpl. Fleury was a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

"Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid, they have earned our undying gratitude. America will never, ever forget their sacrifices."

Cpl. Fleury the flag of the United States of America has your blood sewn into the fabric; it shall forever wave in your honor.

Freedom requires sacrifice the protected will never know.
