Well I got here by mistake. Yet I just had to read on and see. I don't know you, yet I must say something for I too I have served and know. Maybe in a different country with a different uniform, and while I might have never seen war up close, I stood ready and have heard so much about men like you. I always wonder for how long would they remember if it was me? Would it make a difference? Everyday I live in freedum, it is because someone has paid the price for me to be free. I don't know you, but thank you. I guess I should stive to be a better man always so that your sacrefice can be repaid in kindness to others. Yet, your family has paid the price too. I keep telling my grandson every rememberance day, that behind every crosses in the cemitary, there is a family too. Sorry

Seven years today for seven sets of family and friends, and only a few days from the tenth anniversary of 9/11; that day that changed all our lives forever. Ten years ago last week or so, I was at Camp Pendleton watching my young 2/1 Marine graduate from boot camp, with pride that he had made it through the tough thirteen weeks. Didn't have a thought of what was to come; that the six hundred new young Marines I watched on parade would be a number soon surpassed in military losses. Some of these seven young men we remember today likely joined after 9/11, willing to make the ultimate wartime sacrifice if they were called, as we now know they were. The years pass, but it still seems like yesterday to me, so I can not imagine what it is like for the families. But we remember and I'm proud to call their names from memory, with a thought as well to the brave Iraqi interpreters who died with them on September 6th, 2004.
Michael Allred, Mick(Nygard-)Bekowsky, David Burridge, Derek Gardner, Quinn Keith, Joseph McCarthy, and Lamont Wilson. We have searched them each out and brought them to life in our hearts. Gratitude, prayers and blessings to each family member and friend.

As I join my former Marine for his university graduation this week, we will both be remembering these brothers from that deployment and their family and friends.
I have shared this story with the teen boys I work with, and encouraged them to seek out a fallen soldier to carry in their hearts as one inspiration for serving others with their own lives.

So long and yet it seems like yesterday. These seven Marines and their loved ones from that dark September 6th have been in my mind all month and particularly over Labor Day weekend. It was a trip back in time to my hometown, complete with fair and patriotic rodeo grand entry with a tribute to those who served. New to me was the sold out concert the night before, and everyone was talking about how the entertainer had sung a patriotic theme and then brought a group of Marines in dress blues up on stage to receive a large toys for tots contribution. The crowd gave the Marines a standing ovation and wouldn’t sit down. It was a good feeling to know that across the country similar celebrations of gratitude were happening. And despite the thrill of dress blues, we all know it’s the hot sweaty dirty guys out in the grit and sand in digital camos and desert boots that we are cheering for.
Then I came home and opened the e-mail forward with the u-tube video showing the signal motion for gratitude to our service men and women; hand over heart down to open hand, so natural and unobtrusive. Bless who ever came up with it.
So we remember these sons and their families and friends with gratitude and honor once again.
May God Bless You All, heart to hand.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Derek, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

A Prayer For Our Soldiers ~~
DEAR FATHER UP IN HEAVEN
WE COME HUMBLY TO YOU TODAY,
THINKING OF OUR SOLDIERS
WHO ARE VERY FAR AWAY........
WE ASK FOR YOUR PROTECTION LORD
PLEASE KEEP THEM SAFE AND WARM,
AND WHEN EVIL LURKS AROUND THEM
KEEP THEM FROM ALL HARM........
BLESS EACH FAMILY AND THEIR CHILDREN
WHO GO THROUGH DRED EACH DAY
WONDERING IF THEY WILL COME HOME
OR ARE THEY GONE TO STAY.......
GOD PLEASE PROTECT OUR SOLDIERS
WHO FIGHT FOR OUR COUNTRYS NAME,
PLEASE DEAR LORD KEEP THEM SAFE
AND BRING THEM HOME AGAIN........
OUR COUNTRY STANDS FOR FREEDOM
WE FIGHT TO KEEP THE CAUSE,
WE MUST ALL STAND TOGETHER
NO MATTER WHAT THE COST......
SO DEAR FATHER UP IN HEAVEN
WONT YOU HEAR OUR PLEA,
BRING PEACE TO EVERY NATION LORD
SO OUR COUNTRY WILL BE FREE........

It is heartbreaking to read of your terrible loss. As the days and years pass by, I do hope that you are receiving comfort from our God who promises that if we "throw our burdens on Him, He will sustain us" (Psalm 55:22). I hope that you all, including Derek's fiancee', can find peace and that the promises of God at Revelation 21:4 is something you hold dear. My deepest sympathies.

Father we entrust our brother Derek to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Derek in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Dereks' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.
...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

I can not sleep, even though it’s been a wonderful evening. Candlelight yard and great friends, great music and all my small world is well, and at peace. Yet, the names go through my mind and faces and smiles and the national news on that fateful Labor Day morning. Michael Allred, Mick Bekowsky, David Burridge, Derek Gardner, Quinn Keith, Joe McCarthy, Lamont Wilson, God Bless your families and friends, and know you all are not alone, we remember, and these lost sons bring meaning and purpose to life well lived, knowing that life is a privilege. And yes, the Iraqi interpreters whose names we have never heard, we remember you.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

It's been 2 years since Derek left this world. I remember him since back in LHHS days when we used to hang out during lunch along with some other friends. He was great friend that would make us laugh, have a good time and was a great football player. I miss him, even though I lost contact with him before he left to join the Marines. When I found about his fate, I regret for not keeping in contact and now that he's no longer with us, my thoughts and prayers go to Derek's family. May the lord give them strength and bless them. We miss you Derek, you are our hero!

To the family of Derek Gardner, The first "anniversary" of Derek's death will be in a few days, and my heart is still heavy with knowledge of the pain you must experiencing all this long, excruciating year. I didn't know your son, but mine was in the platoon that your son was accompanying that day. Derek's death touched all of us whose sons were there. Everyday I think of your son and the others that were killed last Labor Day. All the young men will be in my heart forever. I just wanted you to know I am thinking of you especially this week with love.

April 2, 2005
Derek Gardner, we will remember you and your service and ultimate sacrifice. We will remember all of the seven Marines from that Labor Day of sorrow and the Iraqi interpreter who died with them outside Fallujah. Fate placed you in the company of Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines that day, so you find yourself adopted into the hearts of many 2/1 parents. My son Darrell also served with the "2/1",though in a different company, and I am in an informal e-mail group of 2/1 parents who supported each other for those seven long months. Every one of us remembers the national news that fateful morning and the chill that came over our hearts. We just knew, and then came the phone calls from the Fox company surviving sons and we mentally ticked off who was accounted for and the waiting began. The doorbell passed us by, but several of our sons were on the scene and will bear the memories of their brothers always.
So Derek, we come to know you only by internet searches for your name, where we find your story. We send condolences to your parents, family and friends and hope they know they are wrapped in a virtual circle of thoughts and prayers from afar. The 2/1 represented states across the nation and the seven, a true cross section of America. CNN's Paula Zahn Now show did a feature on the men of Fox company,"Pale Rider Three." Copies are available from the CNN site. Pictures of the seven closed out the show. Derek is joined by Michael Allred, Mick (Nygard-)Bekowsky, David Burridge, Quinn Keith, Joseph McCarthy, and Lamont Wilson. We have searched them each out and brought them to life in our hearts. Please forgive my presumption in telling this story second hand and any misinformation or mispelling. We did not know these sons in life but we can list their names from memory and every Labor Day will call September 6th, 2004. Derek, we will carry you and your brothers in our hearts always. You have made a difference to millions and someday soon Iraqi children will dance in freedom on the sands you walked.
