Juan M. Alcantara Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 10, 2007.
Juan M. Alcantara was due back in the U.S. this fall, and he and his fiancee Sayanora Lopez planned to move to North Carolina in January. In his final text message, Alcantara delicately pressed his fiancee to learn how to drive so she would be ready for their new life in the South. "I love u and u better tell me some news about the driver's permit when I get back," he texted. "Love u and bye." Alcantara, 22, of New York City, was killed Aug. 6 by an explosive in Baqubah. He was assigned to Fort Lewis. "He was a nice, quiet child," said his mother, Maria Alcantara. "He used to like to play basketball and football. He was never in trouble. He never did anything wrong." After his service, he planned to go to college and join the NYPD, where his sister, Fredelinda Pena, is now a rookie. "To protect and serve" was in his blood. After his fiancee gave birth June 29 to their daughter, Jaylani, Alcantara told her, "My life was completed, but you completed my life even more when you conceived our baby," she said. "His love was true," Lopez said.

I found out about your death about 2 weeks after it occured. I was immediately disoriented and consumed with disbelief. I seriously couldn't believe it. I had seen you not too long beforehand, when you told me you were going to Iraq... We had hung out and laughed and shared hours just watching TV and catching up. I cried so much because I never lost anyone in my life. My brother is a Marine and I can seriously imagine what your family is going through. Please know that you are not forgotten. Although you and I didn't know each other too well, I know you well enough to say that you were an amazing person. You would laugh a lot and had a great sense of humor. I remember when I first met you; Adriana introduced us; then years later we ended up in the same car, HUGE coincedence lol we were both shocked to see eachother.I remember the last time I saw you. If I had known it was going to be the last time I'll ever see your smiling face, I would have cherished it so much more. Thank You for being such a wonderful person towards me. I truly know that you're an angel. Please look down on everyone who loves and cares for you and smile. You were truly loved, and still are. I know you're in a better place. I never forgot you and I haven't had closure because I never got to say goodbye. This is my time now... Juan, thank you for everything, for being a good friend, for cooking lol, for the many laughs we shared. I'm sorry I didn't appreciate you enough, I didn't know you were going to be taken by God so soon. But I'm sure you're ok and smiling down on everyone. R.I.P. I'm STILL in disbelief that you're no longer with us. Goodbye Juan... I'll never forget you. You are a true hero. My heart and condolences for the Alcantara family. Although you don't know me, I knew Juan pretty well. We had great times together. I love you Juan...See you at the gates of Heaven soon. XOXO... @--;--

I did not know Cpl. Alcantara but upon seeing that he came from Washington Heights, where most of my son's friends live, felt compelled to write something here today. I've read the entries and can tell that he was a great brother, fiancee, friend and no doubt son. May his family and friends find peace in remembering all the good memories they shared with him. May he rest in peace. God bless you all.

From the time that i used to see you around the block, til the day that you passed, you have been a role model for me. You used to act stupid with all of us little kids at the time and always kept us smiling. You we're a great soldier and a great person to look up to. Always used to cheer me up when i was a little kid. Until this day, those memories will be cherished and your daughter will be taken great care of, just for you.

Beforehand I would like to say Thank You So Much to a very close and sincere friend whom I had the honor and privelage to serve with in our tour in Iraq from June 2006 to the very last day of his tragic death along with Cpl. Khan, Sgt. Gummersall, and Sgt. Thompson. It is with a heavy heart that I mourn his loss even today. Such a great friend to have around. Always makign jokes, having every one of his friends laugh, that was Juan. Never held grudges, always found a way to cheer you up. Kept to himself and was very smart and attentive. His character to me was intriguing because he was the light of the party. His personality eximplified what I believe every Dominican has, charisma. Thanks to him I am able to enjoy my freedom. Unfortunately it is really not the way I wanted to return from Iraq or any of the other guys. We all mourned the 11 brothers we lost, Juan being one of them, but the one that hurt me the most considering we even had a "going-away-to-iraq" party. We shared a great evening and went out with family and friends on the night before our departure. To think how fast time has gone by, now I ask God to raise his little girl along side her mother whom I respect for what she has had to endure and the way she has taken the outcome of our brother's demise. May she forever be blessed and may Laylani's life be properous. GOD BLESS YOU querido amigo. Que an paz descanses and when our time knocks at our front door we will meet again. Love of Country! Sgt. Espana 1st Battalion 23rd Infantry, HHC Company Recon Platoon, Squad 1 Scout. Now LAPD officer remembering his fallen brother, never forgotten.

Sinceramente,
Ana Méndez

This is crazy, it's been a year and I still can't believe you're gone. I know you're looking down at us probably cracking the same jokes we used to. Man, we grew up together, on the block 186, now all I have are memories, like when we used to sit in front of building 247 and watch people trip on the uneven sidewalk I still laugh when I think of it. I miss you like crazy, you were, and will always be a great person, full of life and so funny, I really miss you juan : ( .....but I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to meet you and share a great friendship with you, I'll never forget you

In Memory of Juan ~ (Debra Estep)

August 6, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Juan, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

my brother like always smiling

The price he and his family have paid, will never be forgotten.
In the days to come if you find yourself feeling like you can‘t go on , recall the years and days you were blessed by his presence, this is the one thing that cannot be taken away from you are your memories, may you find comfort there and may God’s Peace strengthen you through the difficult days ahead and the emptiness in your hearts!

To the parents of Juan, I would like to extend my heart felt sorrow as I know what you are going through and what you will yet go through in the coming weeks. I too am the mother of another fallen soldier and with God's continued support in my life I try to reach out to other who might need the support of someone who has been where you are. I want to offer you the support you may need to contact me anytime so that you may vent, talk or just seek comfort I am here for you. As a Gold Star Mother I've reached out through God's blessings to many across the country and we have a good support group. May God continue to give you and your family the love, comfort and healing that you need. In memory of my son SPC Harry (Buck) Winkler III KIA Samarra, Iraq November 12, 2006

My heartfelt sympathy to the Alcantara family in the loss of Juan. I did not know Juan, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. My heart was touched by the many wonderful/beautiful things written about you. Juan you are my hero and you will NEVER be forgotten.
I send each of you a hug from the most inner part of my heart.
Love and Peace
