Carl Barnes Obituary

AUGUSTA -- An icon of ice cream from central Maine, Carl H. Barnes, 94, of Sewall Street died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at home, with his family at his bedside.

He was born in Farmingdale on Oct. 16, 1913, son of Harland S. Barnes and Phoebe Corkum Barnes.

He lived in Augusta since 1915, when his family established Alta Vista Dairy farm on Hospital Street. He graduated from Cony High School where he was active in athletics and a member of the undefeated state championship football team of 1932.

He was manager and later owner of Barnes and Son Cash Market on Bridge Street in Augusta, where he manufactured his own ice cream until called to serve in World War II. At that time, the ice cream business was moved to 41 Sewall St., where his wife, Betty (McLaughlin) Barnes, whom he married in 1938, continued the business. On returning from the Army, he expanded the ice cream business. Over the next six decades, with his son, Richard, Barnes Family Ice Cream was distributed throughout the state of Maine.

He was a volunteer Augusta fireman for 18 years and a Civil Defense volunteer. He was a life member of Fitzgerald-Cummings Post 2 American Legion and a member of John F. McPherson Chapter 1 Disabled American Veterans. He was a life member of the Kennebec Historical Society, a member of the Maine Society of Mayflower Descendants, and a member of the William Brewster Society and the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club. Sports he enjoyed were sailing, skiing and snowmobiling. He also had a lifelong interest in gardening.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty, in 2001; and his sister, Ruth Barnes Trial.

He is survived by children, Nancy B. Hill, of Charleston, S.C., Richard C. Barnes, of Augusta, and daughter Margaret "Snooky" LaVallee and her husband, Ronald, of West Gardiner and Queen Valley, Ariz. His grandchildren are Jason R. Barnes and his wife, Karen, of Westbrook, Rachel Chandler and her husband, Drew, of Durango, Colo., Kayte Barnes, of Durango, Jake Barnes, of Augusta, Jenna LaVallee, of Portland, and Dr. James LaVallee, of West Gardiner. He had one great-grandchild, Fiona Chandler, and several nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. I worked for Carl about 20 years ago. For the most part it was just Carl (in his 70s) and me (17) making ice cream in his basement. His work ethic and strength always amazed me and I have fond memories of him to this day. I will miss my friend Carl. I wish his family well during this difficult time.

Mr. Barnes has been an Icon in Augusta for so many years. I also lived across the street and Margaret and I walked to Lincoln School each day. One day when they were selling ice cream after lunch I bought a second one for my younger sister Ann so that she could have one after school. After recess I went back to my classroom and placed her ice cream bar in my desk. Well of course it melted and I was so upset... but once Mr. Barnes heard the story, he of course made sure that Ann got an ice cream bar that day.
Ann and I send our sincere sympathy to your family. Having recently lost our Dad we know how difficult this can be.
You have all been so attentive to your Dad's health needs and those special times will help you through the long healing process.
Again... we are so sorry for your loss.

I grew up with Carl's granddaughter, Rachel, and visited his home on several occasions. Carl and Betty always made me feel like part of the family, which meant so much to me since my grandparents lived out of state. My thoughts and prayers are with Carl’s family at this difficult time.

I grew up a couple houses away from the Barnes and enjoyed many a B-bar from Carl's cellar freezer, and not just on Halloween when the long line formed outside the front door. I sold them up the street at Lincoln School's snack bar during my grammar school years in the 1950s, proud to be a distributor. One young customer, Mark Byron, bought so many that I use to call him "Ice Cream" when I saw him approaching the counter, a nickname I believe he enjoys to this day. Little things, but of the kind that stick with you all your life, a testimony to the man, who, for me, has always been the embodiment of the old-time quintessential Mainer of the very best mold.

My husband Lou and I had the honor of a tour and a taste (ginger ice cream - so good!) just a very few years ago. My tasting Barnes Ice Cream started about 1947 when I started school with Nancy at Lincoln. What a treat it was to go to school with a friend whose Dad made ice cream! He was always so nice to us and his humor, which lasted his whole life, was terrific! I know Nancy, Dick and Margaret will really miss their Dad and so will Augusta. Lou and I send our sympathy to you all,

I have very fond childhood memories of riding my bike from my house on North Chestnut Street with the neighborhood gang down to the back door of the Barnes home on Sewall Street. Mr. Barnes would always stop his work to show us how the ice cream was made and what flavors he was making that day. He would sell us ice cream bars and send us on our way with a smile. He will be sadly missed!

I have wonderful memories of my Grandfather and I going to the store and getting the butterscotch dipped ice cream bar.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

Carl was the epitome of a perfect gentleman and a delight to be with. You always felt so happy that you had stopped to see him.I admired him so much and enjoyed my visits with him.It was difficult to see the decline in his health and he has been in my thoughts these last months as I knew the end was near for him. I was with him on his 90th birthday and he paid me the highest compliment by calling me his sunshine. I always tried to tell him funny stories about the family to keep him abreast of what was happening with them all.He took great delight in making me coconut ice cream and I can remember him climbing up on the back of our pickup truck not that long ago to secure a box of his wonderful ice cream that he had made for us.When we'd take it home to share with family we'd talk about how Betty and Carl were still making ice cream together in the basement of their home as they had been doing since after Carl came home from the war. He and Betty made a wonderful team and I know it was hard for him after she died. His family have been incredible in their devotion and care for him so he could remain in his home until the end.I'm sure that has been a very difficult task for them. My sympathy to them at this sad time. The only comfort I can take in his passing is in knowing that Betty and Carl are united again.

A remarkable man that I was so fortunate to have known since I was a very young person. A model example of what a person who takes space on this earth should be all about, dedication to country, hardworking, compassionate, a witty sense of humor and a handshake that could bring you to your knees.
