John O'Leary Obituary

John (Jack) O'Leary Nov. 4, 1931 ~ August 3, 2009 Surrounded by his family, Jack passed away after a long illness at the age of 77. He was born in New York City to Rose and Humphrey O'Leary and grew up on Long Island. He graduated from St. Ann's High School in Manhattan and graduated Manhattan College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and subsequently earned a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He entered Officers' Candidate School for the United States Navy in 1953, was commissioned an Ensign, and served with distinction for twenty years as an officer in the Civil Engineer Corps. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, first as Executive Officer of Military Construction Battalion (MCB)-133 and then as Commanding Officer of MCB-8. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1973 he joined Bechtel Power Corporation as a Project Manager overseeing various large construction projects throughout the United States until his retirement in 1996. He was the beloved husband of Emily O'Leary and loving farther of Denise (Kent Thiry) and the devoted grandfather of Matthew and Christina. A long-time resident of Marin County, he enjoyed many years of Stanford and 49'ers football, Giants baseball, the company of numerous friends, the Pacific Ocean and the beauty of this area. He was a man of profound faith, and will be missed by all. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Larkspur with interment immediately following at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery. The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself … any man’s death diminishes me".
