Mrs. Smith: Jerry and I worked together for many years at CTF. He was the only person I know that had a kind word for everyone. Jerry was very respectful to all he came in contact with on a daily basis. He was such an enjoyable person to be around. I have many fond memories of our teamwork and I know that he will be dearly missed by you, your family and all of his work associates. God bless you and I am truly sorry for your loss.

Dear Byrl,
Gwen and I convey great sympathy for your loss - and ours. Jerry was truly a wonderful person - a real gentleman; never a politician, but always a diplomat when it came to his passion for good government. He always had a smile on his face - even in the worst of times. I know that smile must be radiating from Heaven at this very time. May God Bless You and your family, especially during this trying time.

I remember Jerry when we played high school lightweight football together at Monterey High School in 1962. He might have been 6 feet tall then, but couldn't make the weight requirement to play varsity. He was the same person then as now, thoughtful and kind. I would see him throughout the years and he would always talk about those days when we played together. The world lost one of the good guys.

Byrl, It's been more than 20yrs since I've seen you and Jerry and this came as a real shock to me. It never dawned on me who this person was who touched so many lives until I saw your name, then I remembered you as the sister of Wilhelmina and Jerry as the brother in law. I am blessed to have been acquainted and I remember the warm hospitality shown by you and your late husband. I will keep you in my prayers.

What a wonderful, unforgettable, tribute. God Bless You Byrl, and Brianna, and, God Speed, Jerry.

Mrs. Smith,
My family didn't know Jerry very well. My parents also attend St. Francis Church. One day, just a few months ago, my mother and father were in Costco...and so was Jerry. He came and greeted them as if they had know each other for years. His warmth and kindness made them feel wonderful, to think Jerry Smith greeted them as if they were long time close friends. But, Jerry had the knack of making everyone feel cared for and part of the family. You have both served our community so unconditionally, it will be hard not to feel the void that he has left. My family is praying for you during this tough time.

Jerry was the epitome and personification of gracious sincerity, gentle humility and loving warmth. His dark brown eyes, wide smile and encircling embrace will be remembered forever. He was, above all else, a gentleman. And he loved you with all his heart.

Never to be forgotten, Jerry will remain a shining example for generations to come.
I am a better person for having known him and for knowing you.

Our deepest sympathies to the Smith family. We didn't know Jerry Smith personally, but we've lived in Seaside for the past 15 years and were always very fond of Jerry Smith during his term as mayor and his endeavors thereafter. He was a great mayor and we saw him around town all the time, he always had a wave and a smile. We'd see him at our children's school functions, he was always geniunely involved... Always such a bright and friendly person, a wonderful spirit. We've always been fond of him and are sorry to hear of his passing. God bless you.

Mrs. Smith, It was with great sorrow learning of Jerry's passing. I worked many years with Jerry at CTF and I know you and I have met eithern at a crab feed or other community event. Jerry and I worked together on several projects from the landscaping of a city park in Greenfield or organizing the CTF crab feed. Jerry did alot for his community and the people around. Most notable to me was that no matter how far he acheived in his political career or whoever he was talking to at the moment, he would stop, shake your hand and introduce you to the dignitary he was talking to, making you a part of of the conversation. This time of year at CTF when you saw Jerry, you knew he was gonna get some money out of you for a worthy cause. He was one of the most compassionate individuals I have ever known, always raising money and trying to help those less fortunate. Jerry will be greatly missed as a County Supervisor, former co worker and as a friend.

You gave me my first baby shower when I was still a glimmer in mom and dad's eye.

When I would see Jerry he could recite my weight, date, and time, at birth. What a brilliant mind my godfather had.

Aunt Byrl, you held me in your arms when we walked down the aisle for my christining. And, your mother was my very first baby-sitter.

I am sorry my godfather is gone. He was truely another black leader in the making.

It makes me proud to know, I am your first and oldest godchild.

With this note I send you my spirit, love, and courage.

When I saw the photo of Jerry in the Herald recently, receiving those paper cranes, it reminded me of something I once read--Ralph Waldo Emerson's definition of success. "To laugh much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one's self; to leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived--this is to have succeeded." We were lucky to have known him, we will miss him, and my heart goes out to Byrl.

Bryl, Dick and I were extremely upset to hear about Jerry's passing. We know how much he meant to you and yours, and we are feeling your pain. He was a wonderful man and servant to us all in Monterey County.

Please remember to hold all your great memories of him during this sorrowful time.

LOVE WILL BE FOUND IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO SURROUND YOU AND CARE ABOUT YOU. PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE PLACE OF SADNESS WHERE YOU ARE NOW, WILL BE THERE FOR YOU. WE WILL MISS YOU. BUT NOT FORGET YOU.

Jerry Smith was such a sweet man. I was so sorry to hear about his death.

I met him once or twice, briefly, and he always treated me like I was a friend. I'm sorry I'll never get to see him again.

I want to extend my sympathy to Byrl. I'm sure Jerry will be sorely missed.

Hi Byrl. . .here's a voice from your distant past stopping by to tell you how shocked and saddened I was to learn of Jerry's death. Altho it's been many, many years since we've seen each other, I thought of you and Jerry quite often and quite fondly. He was a very special person -- as can be seen in these wonderful tributes -- and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. May God watch over you and grant you peace.
Lots of love, today and every day,

Byrl
We all lost a special person in our lives.
As Gen. Mgr. of the Water Co. I remember Jerry coming to see me when he was running for Mayor. He wanted to know how he could help his community and the Peninsula, he was the only person running for office whoever came to talk to me: I was impressed and we became friends.
Someone once said that the good die young and before there time, this the case with Jerry. He will be missed by all of us.

Dear Mrs Smith
In the loss of your husband, may his work on this earth bring good memory of his Life. He is a very kind and caring gentleman. May the Lord be with you at this time of need. May Jerry Smith rest in peace.
