Joseph Doering Obituary

Joseph John Doering ESCONDIDO -- Joseph John Doering passed away quickly after collapsing at a National Tax Seminar in Las Vegas, Nevada, that he attended each year. He had a massive brain aneurysm and his guardian angel rushed him to the hospital. Joe died at 4:37pm on December 2, 2010. He was of German /Scottish-Irish heritage and born in Detroit, Michigan on February 18, 1928. Before too long, his family moved to Rock Island, Illinois, where he would spend his whole adolescent life. Joe was the middle child of three, and always was hard at work to make money for his family at a very young age. Chemistry, Numbers, Mathematics, and Aviation were his big loves in his work life and these would later consume his whole life. Joe served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. during WW II. He met his wife, Vivian Nellie Velichkoff, at a college chemistry class. Since Joe knew all the answers and Vivian needed help, they worked together. With the permission of her mother, Joe married Vivian in 1950 and together raised six children. Joe had many jobs in the Aviation Field- McDonnell Douglas; General Dynamics; and Teledyne-Ryan in San Diego, California. Before getting his pension, Teledyne-Ryan laid off many employees and Joe was one of them. It was at this time that he started his own tax preparation company, Doering Diversified, LTD (DDL). Joe really enjoyed doing personal income taxes and corporation income taxes. Joe had a vast love for family, music, animals, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Mary's Catholic Church. He loved when his granddaughter, Jennifer, came over to visit. Joe had a couple of favorite nicknames: "Tomahawk Joe" and "The Pathfinder," plus there was not a dessert he could not devour ~ dark chocolate was his favorite. Joe was a kind loving husband, generous father, and a good friend to all. He is survived by his wife of 60 years of marriage, Vivian; and by his children and families, Kathleen Sullivan-Doering and Richard Sullivan of Honolulu, HI; Stephen, Lorraine and Jennifer Doering of Carlsbad, Calif.; George and JoEllen Doering of Los Angeles, Calif.; Susan Doering and Dieter Wulfhorst of Auberry, Calif.; and Michael and Mark Doering of Escondido, Calif. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Doering of Illinois; and sister, Cyrilla Meier of California. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, 225 S. Broadway in Escondido. The Rosary will be at 7 p.m. with music performed by family members prior to the Rosary from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1160 South Broadway in Escondido, with the Committal to follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. A reception in Joe's honor will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Escondido following the Committal. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Joe's name to the "Parish Hall Building Fund" c/o St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1160 South Broadway, Escondido, Calif. 92025. Arrangements are by Alhiser-Comer Mortuary

Dear Mrs. Doering and family
We are shocked to hear of the passing of dear sweet Joe. He was our "tax guy" for 30 years, thought he always would be. He was invested in our family too, even checked on us during the terrible fires in Ramona. He was a blessing and we will miss the time we won't be able to share with him while doing our taxes. Our prayers are with your family during this time.

Dear Vivian and Family,

It is a shock to know what you have had to experience in losing Joe. The family here in Alton/St. Louis feels this loss deeply. Our prayers are with you all. God knows that we will always have each other to the end of the age. Joe's eternal rest comes with the promise that we will meet him when the end of our days arrives. It gives me comfort to know that Jesus was awaiting Joe with a hug, and that we will one day share in that heavenly love.

Dear Vivian, I was so sorry to hear of your loss and to offer my condolences to you and your family. Joe was a mentor of mine at the state CSEA meetings. He took me under his wing, and showed me the ropes. He was truely a wonderful person and his loss will be felt by many. He will be remembered in my prayers.

December 16, 2010

Joe was both a gentleman and a kind man. I was honored to get to know him as a fellow tax professional. As I drove to Escondido for the CSEA meeting Wednesday night I was looking forward to seeing his smiling face, and was shocked to hear of his passing. I will pray for you Vivian that God will give you strength and comfort!

Dearest Vivian: I was so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a true gentleman. It was always a pleasure seeing him at the Law Library's annual Witkin Awards dinner. The first time I met Joe was at the Witkin dinner. We all sat together at the North County Bar table. I remember Joe ate his dessert before his entree and I thought to myself, "There's a man who knows how to enjoy life!" Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I know your faith and your family will help you through this time of grieving. You also have many friends who will be praying for you as well. God bless you & your family.

Dear Doering Family:

We are so very sorry to hear of Joseph's passing. He was a very kind and gentle man and it was always nice and comforting seeing you and he at mass. He will be greatly missed. Your kind and generous gift of scholarship money for our daughter back in 2007 has helped her continue her college education and for that we will always be grateful. Your family is in our prayers.

Love,
The Moreno Family

Dear Vivian & Family
We are stunned by your loss--We had such a good time in September, catching up on our lives, at our reunion in San Diego--It is so easy to forget how we are not in control, that Our Lord is the One in charge. But we are blessed for having known Joe.

Dear Vivian and Family,
I'm so sorry to hear of Joe's passing; face to face with our Creator, how blessed is he? Your family is a part of our family, and I'll always treasure all the memories we share: Mexico, St. Mary's, Irish Dancing, singing in the car driving to San Francisco with George playing the guitar... We have been so blessed by Joe and your family. In our hard days with family passing, you were always there for us. We are here. You are all my in thoughts and prayers. God's Peace be with you. Dear Vivian and Family: I have fond memories of our crazy Irish dancing days, performing all over the place and especially our travels to San Francisco. I remember Joe's funny sense of humor and that he was very kind to all who knew him. God Bless.

December 14, 2010

Dear Vivian & Family;
Everlasting will be the memories we have of visiting with Joe while we were all at the '48 class reunion in September. May the Lord indeed bless the life he lived and all our lives with whom he came in contact. May his memory live on to remind us that on this earth we have no continuing city abnd that we, too prepare for our day of departure. Our greatest hope is that someday we shall all be reunited in an everlasting love. May the Lord of us all bless you with assurance, strength, support, and hope renewed.

Sincerely in His Name;
