I only knew Tico, through my father-in-law, who lives in Carlsbad CA. Every time we would visit, before sunset, we would walk to the beach. Tico and Beverly were always there. Both the sweetest people I've ever meet! Tico always had a smile as we walked up and his kind nature made me feel as if I had always known him. I will miss those times. Tico said "Watch the sun as it disappeared. If you look close you'll see a flash". Thank you Tico.

Although Doug always preferred Tamarack to the Power Plant, I remember the times he did surf there with brother Dennis, Glen, Steve, RD, Tillman and the other "legends." I felt priviledged then and even more so now to say that I shared the water with him. His surfer spirit was as authentic as it can be. I can still see his classic style knee paddling and parallel stance on the board, and that big grin of pure stoked pleasure on his face as rode to the shore.
Aloha Doug, your spirit lives on

I met Tico back in 95, I just started surfing and decided to come down to Tamarack and check it out. I Lived in Moreno Vally at the time, and he made me feel like i was a local and talked to me like we've known eachother for a long time. I can say he was and will be an inspiration to me and anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him. It's been an honor surfing with you and knowing you. God bless you and your family. I only knew him as “Tico” and I only know enough to know that he was a local living legend at Tamarack. My brief encounters with Doug were always pleasant, he had and infectious smile, and I think he carried himself to be an ambassador of surfing in Carlsbad. Please keep us posted on the paddle out.
He will be missed and our prayers go out to his family and close friends.

Sad to hear of Doug's passing. My deepest sympathy to Dennis, Mary and all the family.
It seems like only yesterday sitting and listening to Ted Tuck tell stories of Doug's physical feats.

The human race has many common enemies, such as sickness and old age, which likewise cause much suffering. God promises to vanquish them all, finally passing sentence on mankind’s greatest foe. “As the last enemy, death is to be brought to nothing.”—1 Corinthians 15:26.
With that promise fulfilled, humans will enjoy perfect life, unmarred by sin and death. Meanwhile, we can take comfort in knowing that our dead loved ones are resting, and if they are in God’s memory, they will be resurrected in his due time.

Doug was one of the first people I met when I moved to Carlsbad over twenty years ago. I was very impressed with him as a person out of the gates; he seemed to have a passion for living life to the fullest and could see beauty where others could not. I quickly became part of the Tamarack crew and was embraced by Doug as well as the other surfers at Tamarack. Doug was and will always be a true friend and I very dearly cherished our friendship and I will miss seeing him on the early morning dawn patrol and miss him for the evening sunsets. Doug is a Carlsbad icon and he will be sorely missed by his family and his many, many friends in the local area. Doug keep surfin'........

I first met Doug Tico when I was 6 years old. I bought my first baseball cards out of the back of his Helms Bakery delivery truck in my neighborhood in Oceanside. Some of these baseball cards I sold years later to help pay my tuition to law school, what an investment! I had tacos on Sundays purchased by my father on our way home from church at "Tico's Tacos" (13 for a dollar) and I was inspired to surf from watching Doug and his buddies out at Tamarack while growing up in Carlsbad something I have now been doing for over 45 years and counting. I did not know Doug personally and have not lived in Carlsbad for many years but every time I heard of Doug over the years I was reminded of A LIFE WELL LIVED! God's blessings on you all.

Our hearts go out to all of Doug's family and friends at this time. We had the pleasure of knowing Doug over the years, always such a positive happy man. We have fond memories of seeing him with his surf buddies early morning, and also while watching the sunsets in Carlsbad with his beautiful wife. And we think of the many summer nights at "Jazz in the Park", mellow times listning to some good music. Doug truly enjoyed life to the full, and we celebrate the memories that he has made with the Carlsbad/Oceanside. community. Doug had many friend and many great stories to share. NO BAD DAYS! Aloha Doug. Love, Mark and Suz Slawson, Warren and Sandi Calhoun
