LeRoi Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2008.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeRoi Moore, the versatile saxophonist whose signature staccato fused jazz and funk overtones onto the eclectic sound of the Dave Matthews Band, has died Tuesday of complications from injuries he suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident, the band said. He was 46.

Moore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was admitted with complications that arose weeks after the June 30 wreck, according to a statement on the band's Web site.

On June 30, Moore crashed his ATV on his farm outside Charlottesville, Va., but was discharged and returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical therapy. Complications forced him back to the hospital on July 17, the band said.

Moore, who wore dark sunglasses at the bands' many live concerts, had classical training but said jazz was his main musical influence, according to a biography on the band's Web site.

Lead singer Dave Matthews credited Moore with arranging many of his songs, which combine Cajun fiddle-playing, African-influenced rhythms and Matthews' playful but haunting voice.

The group broke out of the local music scene with the album "Under the Table and Dreaming." The band won a Grammy Award in 1997 for its hit song "So Much to Say" off its second album "Crash." Other hits include "What Would You Say," "Crash Into Me" and "Satellite."

I know it's a late post for the anniversary of Mr. Moore's tragic passing, but I'm at ED nurse and it's 2021. I remember clearly when I heard about him. I cried for a week off and on. I'm not a crazed DMB fan but in reality if there was a way for me to travel as a roadie, I'd have been in that line. My favorite seats for a concert? Stage left. I loved watching Leroi. My favorite with Carter and Dave close behind.
My heart goes out to Mr. Moore's family. The loss is immeasurable. I have a gut instinct he was an incredible person. Wish I'd known him. At least enough to say, Thank you for all the music you gave everyone. I close my eyes when I hear certain songs and still see and feel his magic.

You once said you would not be missed and everything could just go on with out you, I told you how wrong that was and without you things would never be the same...how terribly right I was and how many of us still think of you daily, still can't believe you are gone. You are always with us and forever will be.

To The Moore Family: I am so sorry he is no longer here with us, but do know that he is still here with us in spirit. I pray that you all will be comforted by these words:

Try to remember that a GOOD man never dies; You will see him many times.
You will feel him in all things that are here out of love, and for love.
The person of a man may leave or be taken away, but the best part of a GOOD man stays. It stays FOREVER!

I was at a Bruce Springsteen concert in Hershey, PA when I learned of Roi's passing from a friend who was checking his email on his blackberry and saw the news item posted. Clarence was belting out his best on "Born to Run." The irony hit me like a ton of bricks. DMB's Groo Grux King keeps reminding me of that bittersweet moment. Long live The King and long live DMB.

After seeing the band at Jones Beach Tuesday July 21st I felt a sorrow not seeing Roi but being able to hear him though he was not visible - shocked to hear the Dreaming Tree being performed is when I realized Roi was still playing with the band but only in my head - looking over where he would normally be standing with Rashon I saw a stand in (Jeff trying to bring the same flavor and passion that Roi would)

He will never be able too - (not his fault)

The moral is and the saying is correct - you don't realize what you have until you don't have it any longer

The DMB will never be the same without the King - we will miss the tasty clean improv you gave us during each live performance - that's what made this band special

As a fan of his work since the beginning; no one really knows what they will miss until it is ripped from them.

For those who knew him, cherish those memories, for those who loved him, love him always.

Although I did not know LeRoi personally, like many long-time fans of the Dave Matthews Band, I am saddened that he is gone. Roi's musical talents have undoubtedly inspired many musicians and music lovers. As a saxophone player, I was especially intrigued by Roi's story and his influence on rock music. His passion for music comes through in every note. His music has touched my soul and I find some comfort in knowing that his recordings live on. My heart goes out to his fiance, family, friends, fans, Dave Matthews and the entire band. I will say a prayer for LeRoi every time I listen to his music.

LeRoi,

You blessed this world with the gift of music. To open the minds, hearts, and souls of the people you play for is nothing short of awe inspiring.

To the Moore family, Dave Matthews, Stephan Lessard, Boyde Tinsley, and Carter Beuford, and the rest of those LeRoi touched, I wish you all the best during these times. I am thankful I saw LeRoi at my first DMB concert in Toronto this year. I will never forget it.

Sincerest wishes,

Leroi, I never knew you. Yet, since the beginning (age 13), your music has touched my life in so many different ways. It has both kept me strong, and has inspired me to live life to the fullest.
