RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Owen Pickett has died. He was 80.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Pickett's death Wednesday night. Details weren't immediately available.

Pickett, a Democrat from Virginia Beach, represented the 2nd District from 1987 to 2001. He also served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1972 to 1986.

McDonnell called Pickett a patriot and says he had a passion for public service.

Rep. Glenn Nye called Pickett a mentor and role model. Sen. Mark Warner said Pickett, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, was a tireless advocate for the nation's military and its families.

In 1982, after an extended search for startup funds for the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, Del. Pickett organized a visit to the Governor seeking a budget amendment in support of the Aquarium. Sidney Kellam was the spokesperson for the group in attendance, and reminded the Governor -among other comments - that the chair of Senate Finance had committed $1M to the project, had suggested the Abandoned Motor Vehicle Fund as a fundng source, and that in the house of state government run by the Senate Finance chair "the rooms have more than 4 corners". The governor assured the visitors that his staff would continue to look but the prospects were not certain. Delegate Picket thanked the Governor for his time, and suggested that he and the governor meet if a budget surplus was found. A few months later, Del Pickett had found the 5th corner and brought the $1M requested to the project. This is one of many, many efforts by Del. Pickett which - while unsung - have made a tremendous difference in the lives of residents and visitors to our city.....Joe Buchanan

In 1963 I was assigned as commanding officer of a squadron at Oceana and moved to Chesopean Colony and the Pickett family became our next door neighbors. I remember being Owen's treasurer for his first term in the Virginia House of Delegates and the excitement and thrill of being on his winning team! Over the years I considered Owen to be my mentor in many ways; he was always available to give of himself to help others; one of his great attributes. I remember asking Owen if he could assist my niece, who had just graduated from dental school, get into the Naval Dental Corps. There were no openings in the Navy, but there was in the Army! This aspiring lady is now a Colonel and a consultant to the Surgeon General in the Army.

We will all miss Owen and our sincere condolences to Sybil, Karen, Laura, Mary and families and we sadly wish we were in Virginia Beach to personally express our condolences!

To the Pickett Family:

On behalf of the Family of the Late Brindle and Rosetta Brockett, Creeds Section, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Thank you sooooooooo much for delivering to us such a Public Servant. It didn't matter what RACE you were - that was no object to Mr. Pickett. I remember sitting at the old Creeds Fire Station - at that time, many days passing out Literature for his campaigns. As My Father dedicated his life to helping Mr. Pickett. I thank him for helping me receive my Government Job in August 1973,on my Birthday of all days, which I retired in 2003, as I was deemed ineligible for the position I desired after scoring 110 on the Civil Service Exam. My Father told me to contact him and he got things rolling. I thank him for my tickets to President Bill Clinton's Inauguration. When I entered his office,he greeted me and told his Personal Aide Jeanne,to even give me Tickets to the Balls. That was the another highlight of my life.
God truly Blessed him with great character, tenacity and love for all mankind. Truly he was effective, efficient, energetic and endowed in all his endeavors. As he was passing on, God told him, 'WELL Done My Good And Faithful Servant. You've Been Faithful Over A Few Things Now I'll Make you Ruler Over Many. Enter into the Joy Of The Lord. Remember, to be absent from the body is present with the Lord - STILL DOING GREAT DEEDS. May God continue to Bless You and Keep You In His Everloving Care. God Bless You!!!!!!!!!

Owen and I served together in the Virginia House of Delegates during his entire 14 year tenue, working closely together on many issues affecting Tidewater. His intellect, legislative skills, and pleasant, even temprament made him one of our finest. My deepest sympathy is extended to his family.

To the Pickett Family, our sincere sympathy and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Owen was a great man and representative for the 2nd District, both in state and federal office. He had many accomplishments throughout his career, and we will always remember his dedication, and leadership. Most of all, he was a friend, who will very much be missed.

Rest in peace, servant of the people. A grateful constituency misses you and remembers you for all your sacrifice for us. We share in the sorrow of your family. We beseech our current representatives to follow your lead. In my lifetime no other public servant has so personally touched my life. You were a true model of a life lived in the service of others.

Although you will undoubtedly receive hundreds of condolences, I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciated what Owen did for me, my brother and my sister when my father passed away. When lawyers, judges, friends and family were distancing themselves, Owen stepped in and honored his commitment to my father (as executor of his estate), despite the chaos that ensued. Those were very difficult times for us and we appreciated his assistance immensely. During your time of loss, please know that there are people like us who were touched by Owen's grace and who are better people for having had the privilege of Owen's mentorship, guidance, love and friendship.

As a retired Army officer, I always appreciated Rep. Owen Pickett's support of the military. Unlike many political figures, he was unusually accessible and responsive to Congressional inquiries, and represented, in my judgment, the very best of representative leadership. I wish we had more leaders like Owen Pickett!

I used to work in his Office 30+ years ago. I'll never forget the day I got sick at work. As the Boss, I always viewed him as very knowledgable, respectful, and kind, but after he handled the situation I was in that day, I saw a very caring and compassionate person, who became "just a friend". I also had the very special pleasure in observing the dedication and love that he had for his family. Not only have we lost a GREAT Politician, I've lost a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the Pickett Family! God Bless all of you!
