Byrd Drucker Obituary

DRUCKER--Byrd, 78, died peacefully on October 25 surrounded by his loving family in New York City. The beloved husband of Janet for 57 extraordinary and memorable years, he is also survived by his adoring children, Carol, William and his wife Rhonda, and his youngest daughter, Abby, as well as three amazing grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sarah Beth and Matthew. His older brothers, Joseph, Simon, and David Drucker predeceased him. He was especially devoted to his sister-inlaw, Anita Caminiti, who showered him with laughter, kindness and an abundance of Italian cuisine. He met Janet at 15 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where they were both raised, and their lives have been inextricably linked ever since. After enlisting in the U.S. Army at 17, he served as a paratrooper in World War II. A graduate of Boys High School in Brooklyn, with both a B.A. and an M.A. from Brooklyn College, he was a devoted teacher of economics and history for 35 years for the New York City Board of Education. An educational innovator, he developed an alternative school at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, which prepared high-school graduates for immediate entry onto a career track. He was the Executive Director of Camp Louemma, part of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, in Glenwood, New Jersey, for 17 years. During this time, he mentored young people in the social work field and created a wonderful camping experience for thousands of New York City children, in the process forming life-long bonds with many of the campers. In 1976, Byrd, along with his wife, Janet, founded Drucker Antiques, which is now operated by their son, William. Their shared passion for art, antiques and design created a business that has cultivated a worldwide appreciation for Georg Jensen silver. His passion, knowledge and perseverance enabled his wife, Janet, to complete her labor of love, the authoritative monograph on Georg Jensen silver, "Georg Jensen: A Traditional of Splendid Silver," now in its second edition. In their 60s, they embarked on a new adventure, and moved from their longtime home in Canarsie, Brooklyn, into Manhattan, where they truly felt like every day was a holiday. He enjoyed summering in the Adirondacks and East Hampton. A passionate New York Knicks fan, whether they won or lost, he was a gracious sportsman and an avid swimmer. Byrd will always be remembered for his humor, intelligence, curiosity, persistence, courage, kindness, wisdom, and his ability to savor every moment of joy. Family was most important to him, and in his mind, a man's wealth could be measured by his abundance of loving family and friends, and in this regard, he was the richest of men, and will be sorely missed. One of the greatest lessons he imparted to his children and grandchildren was that the only things that could limit them were their own dreams. A memorial service will be held, Sunday, October 28, at 11:45am at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, at Amsterdam Avenue.

Although I only knew Byrd for a short time, so many memories flood my mind as I realize he is not longer with us in the physical world - his heart-felt love songs to his beloved wife Janet, his passionate recorder playing, wheelchair tango dancing, island drum beats, and his favorite tune, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," It was a joy to experience the passion, joy, and humor of Byrd and his loving family over the past couple of years. I will miss him very much. My thoughts and love and music are with you [Janet and family] during this time of great loss.

I will always picutre Byrd smiling as he's shirtless with overalls mucking out the barn. He loved that house and we were always welcome. My sincerest condolences to Janet, Carol, Bill and Rhonda and Abby.

I remember Bernie (Byrd) as the ONE of the prior generation in our family who had gone to college and taught in a local, East New York high school, near where I lived. It was a great disappointment to me when I learned that I would not be in the half of the Berriman Junior High graduating student body that would attend Jefferson High School, where I could actually witness someone in my family teaching. When I went away to college and later settled in Los Angeles, I only saw Byrd sporadically, such as at my sons' Bar Mitzvah, and then later after Byrd became ill. Fortunately, I heard much about his branch of the family from his brother, Dave, who also lived out here, so the connection remained strong. I am truly sorry that I will not have the opportunity to visit with Byrd again the next time I go to New York. My father, who is 95 and lives out here with us, was upset when he heard the sad news. He remembers Byrd from when Byrd was a little kid and will therefore miss him the most of all of us. Maxie, Rebecca, Eli, Charley and I send our condolences to Byrd’s wonderful wife, Janet, and to his children and grandchildren.

I wish to express my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of this one of a kind man, Byrd Drucker. I was a camper at Camp Louemma throughout my childhood in the 60s and later staff. It was a wonderful, unusual place for kids to be and grow and his influence in shaping it was felt everywhere. He did something wonderful for so many kids and I thank him from my heart. I wish his family and friends comfort and strength.

Our family was privileged to welcome Bernie and Janet into the Sussex County,NJ area, as my father's pharmacy supplied the camp with medications and medical supplies. My parents often invited the counselors and staff to come to our home on their days off. In turn, Bernie and Janet invited us up to Louemma to swim and attend their amazing summer musicals. I still remember the night we saw "The King and I" with my family. Good night, sweet Bernie. My family will all miss you. Janet and family, our deepest sympathies. Janet and family, I had the privilege of knowing Byrd through my work and passion, aphasia rehabilitation. Although Byrd may not have spoken like you or I at this time in his life, he was our leader and his communication was clear and abundant within our speech community! I will never forget how he spoke to us in song, among the many experiences we shared together. I can truly say he taught me and the students we worked with, much more than we taught him. He was a remarkably gifted person with an indomitable spirit, blessed with a loving family. I am thankful for the opportunity to have known him and you, and the legacy he leaves for other individuals affected by aphasia.

I met Byrd when I spent a week at their home with my best friend Sheila Efrati. He was vivacious, humorous, warm and very welcoming. I had an extraordinary time and one which I will never forget. I had bought many presents for my grandchildren and couldn't fit them all in my suitcases. Byrd took everything out and would you believe, he rearranged it all to fit. He will be missed.
May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion & Jerusalem.
With love,
Sara

I never had the pleasure of meeting Byrd but I have had years of contact with his daughter, Carol, starting back from when our daughters shared the daisy/brownie/girl scout experience up to present date when our daughters are college graduates and starting to make their own ways into the world. I know he was extraordinary. I know we shared "turf" since I spent my high school years living in Canarsie. I know he was loved and will be sorely missed.
