Seymour â€Å"Gig Levine passed away at home in Davis, CA, October 31, 2007 at the age of 82 in the presence of his wife and children. Gig was born in New York City of immigrant parents in 1925. He joined the Army in 1943, landed in France on D-Day, and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. After earning a PhD in Psychology from New York University in 1952, he held faculty positions in the Department of Psychiatry at Ohio State University from 1956-1960, the Department of Psychiatry at Stanford University from 1962 until his retirement in 1995, and the Department of Psychiatry at UC Davis from 1999 until his death. Dr. Levine wrote or and co-authored over 400 research papers in the field of developmental psychobiology. He received many honors during his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology in 2000. During the decades of the 1950s-70s he opened several socially important fields of research, including the effect of neonatal experience on adult behavior, stress responsiveness and immune system responsivity. He was also a devoted opera lover and lifelong San Francisco (ex-NY) Giants fan.

Gig is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara; children Robert Levine (Emily), Leslie McGhie (David), Alicia Levine (Brad Goldberg), and four grandchildren. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Friday, November 9th at 2 PM at the Buehler Alumni Center on the UC Davis Campus. It was a great pleasure knowing Dr. Levine in his capacity of IRB member on the UC Davis board. He served with passion and dedication. His contributions to the scientific review of research and the protection of human subjects were greatly valued. As a person, he was very warm, kind and consciencious. It was such a pleasure knowing him. I will miss him dearly. May God bless him and his family.

Gig was a wonderful person who gave so much to the life of this university, and especially to the neuroscience community. His impact on the Center for Neuroscience and the Neuroscience Graduate Program was large. I got to know him after he invited my lab to present at a Neurolunch event, which he led, and talked with him often thereafter when we ran across one another at the Neuroscience retreat and in our own Center for Mind and Brain where he was a regular visitor. He was a kind soul and it is both a pleasure and humbling to consider his many accomplishments and how he gave freely of himself to all of us here. He will be missed.

With great sadness, we lose a trusted friend, a major scientist and a remarkable individual. Au Revoir mon ami. You will live in my memory.

Gig was one of the strongest scientific and academic influences for me and other neuroscience graduate students at the University of Delaware. His scientific rigor mixed with grandfatherly warmth made him an inspiration to us all. He has driven me to professional excellence while keeping in mind the importance of a humane and philosophical approach to my craft. He will be dearly remembered and missed. My condolences and greatest sentiments to his wonderful wife Barbara and children.
