Leon Cowen Obituary

COWEN--Leon, 87, died of pneumonia in NYC on October 29, 2007. Father of Elaine and Ron Cowen, brother of Estelle Mark, beloved husband of late wife, artist Maria Szeni, attentive grandfather to Julie Cowen, uncle to Alan and Michael. Leon graduated from City College in 1941 and served in the Pacific during WWII. He was an administrator in the New York State Division of Human Rights until his retirement in the early 1980s. Leon then volunteered for many years at the MCR Dispute Resolution Center, helping settle cases out of court. A longtime member of the New York Society of Ethical Culture, Leon also contributed generously to the United Jewish Appeal. Scrappy and keenly alive, Leon in his eighties took computer classes and exercised at the local YMCA, saw several offBroadway and art shows each week, attended demonstrations against the war and injustices around the world, and campaigned actively against President Bush. Memorial service on December 16, 2pm, Ceremonial Room of the NY Society of Ethical Culture, 2 W. 64 St., 4th floor.

We only met Leon once, when he was already in his 80s and had come to the Washington D.C. area to see Ron and his family. Leon impressed us with his energy, wit, and wealth of fascinating anecdotes.

Leon had been planning to move to the D.C. area to be closer to Ron. We were looking forward getting to know him better after that move, but his life ended before it could take place.

We are saddened by Leon’s death and offer our deepest sympathy in your loss to Ron, Cathy, Julie, Elaine, and to Leon's other family members and friends.

Leon,

The memories I have of you I’ll always keep in my mind and heart. For you showed me that you can accomplish anything no matter the age. You where an inspiration too many of us at the Armory Technology & Learning Center where we met as teacher, student and friend. Your enthusiasm for learning how to use the computer, search the internet, send –email, all because you wanted to keep in touch with your family, characterizes your family values.

Farewell “Old Men River” as you used to say when entering the Center. You will be missed.

God bless your soul.

Uncle Leon’s greatness was his fervent belief in human decency. He held firm to a future where fairness, tolerance, kindness and compassion would be offered and received by all.
