It seems that lately I have more occasion to mention Dr. Willis in conversation. I regret being so preoccupied with career and activism that I didn't stay in touch with this mentor. I met Dr. Willis at Princeton. I had redirected my path from pursuing architecture to study Near Eastern Studies. I did not expect to find him. Our interests in Islam and Black Arts coincided. I took his classes, worked for him and participated in the Alain Locke Society. I fondly remember our many discussions in his Jones Hall office. He was an extraordinary man. Yes, he is missed.

Dear Ann, Avery, Kingsley, Gaurley: Tom and I,Judy, were saddened to hear of John's passing. He was a good friend. We remember fondly of the wonderful block parties and the fun we had. How our daughter baby sat your children. How John would help us when we needed help. How, when we'd pass by on our walks, he always took time for us. Ann, our prayers are with you and the "children". It seems odd to call them children, being fully grown into wonderful adults.
It was an honor to know him.

Sincerely, Tom and Judy
