Phyllis Borea Obituary

BOREA--Phyllis Gilbert, born on November 12, 1924 to Clinton Gilbert, a journalist, and Pauline Clark Gilbert, a U.S. Treasury Department employee. While working in Rome, Italy she married her husband Raimondo in 1952. Both he and their son Roberto were photographers and predeceased her. Phyllis was a skilled writer and artist. One of her greatest accomplishments was her position as associate art director at Gourmet from 1983 to 1994. Phyllis died early on December 4, 2007 at Schervier Nursing Home. Surviving are her daughter Carla Borea Brown, her son-in-law Leroy Brown and her grandson Adam Raimondo Brown. A memorial service will be held at Williams Funeral Home Inc. 5628 Broadway at West 232nd St., Bronx on Monday December 10, 2007 from 7pm-8pm.

Tall, commanding, and with a sometimes rather dour demeanor that belied a quick wit and dry, wry sense of humor, Phyllis was a presence. She was talented; beautiful in her youth (as we saw from the double photo frame at her memorial--one side a young Raimondo; the other, a young and very striking Phyllis; devoted to her children; and highly professional in her work. Everyone who had known her at Gourmet had a kind and fond word to say when they heard of her death. I'm sad for Carla's loss. And I'm glad she has "First Thing in the Morning," written by Phyllis and photographed by Raimondo--a wonderful record of a small girl growing up in New York City and of her parents' love for her.

Phyllis was a smart and talented woman with whom I enjoyed working in the art department of Gourmet magazine. I appreciated her unique sense of humor, and will always hold fond memories of her. She was one of a kind. Another artistic spirit has left us.
