I loved Carrie like a sister. She was a friend that could never be replaced. We connected on my levels but the one that glued us together was writing...her passion for literature (life) was one that inspired everyone who new her...
I received the news on Memorial Day...
Memorial Day
Early evening
late May is green--
Outside the windows
Swallows script
Their calligraphy on
The textured grass;
Red Bellied Woodpeckers indent
The Weeping Willow;
Mourning Doves cluster
And take the seed
from the ground beneath
The feeder.
My wife is sitting
on the stone wall watching
my daughter peel bark
from a Himalayan birch.
I sit squinting
Into the lowering sun,
crow’s feet staring
at your discoveries.
Your skin will never be
As soft as it is today;
Forests crumbling into
your indelicate toddler palm.
Remember my love
to gulp the blue sky
To feel the trees with your fingers,
and the grass between your toes,
to shout out the colors you see
and all the words you know,
And remember
that the wind that is
blowing your hair is
the breath of every
living thing.
You’re running around
In circles waving
a Yellow plastic bat,
your mother is chasing you.
Nuthatches dart down
The iron base of the feeder, as
A Rose Breasted Grosbeak,
Breaks sunflowers.
In the distance a lone Cardinal
Perches atop a Colorado
Blue Spruce—
And remember
That you're never too old
to run in circles like a
writer chasing her tale,
because it all ends
with a thud…
this pageantry ends
with a thud,
in a patch of grey
Feathers smudged
On a clear
Impenetrable pane.

The loss of Carrie clearly affects so many of us and I grieve sincerely for my brother, Stephen, whom I know she cared deeply for and for her mother and siblings and many friends. I grieve for myself as I enjoyed Carrie's wit and intelligence and our many chats.
She was greatly blessed in this life; I pray she is with our Lord and Savior. I pray the Lord of Grace has mercy on us all--only He can provide the encouragement and hope needed at a time like this.

Dear Kiki and Family,
I am so saddened by the loss of cousin Carrie. What an sweet and loving person. I remember her visits when I was at college in Long Beach, California. Carrie was such a doll to come and brighten my day! I will keep her always in my prayers.

Oh my sweet Carrie, what a dear, dear friend you were to me. You were truly beautiful inside and out. I always enjoyed our visits together, you had so much to give and say. So well read and intelligent. I grieve with your mother and everyone who knew and loved you.

Dearest Kiki, Arnold, and family,
Although I did not have the pleasure of knowing Carrie, I feel a connection to her from the stories you have shared with me about her, Kiki. Besides being a wonderful daughter, she was a very accomplished and talented woman and had a heart of gold. I am so sorry for your loss. My loving thoughts are with you at this time of sadness. Love, Camille & Michelle

Carrie was one of my students at Dowling College in Oakdale, Long Island, NY in the early 1990's. She was an exceptional human being and one of the finest scholars that I taught at the College. Over the years we kept in touch and her visits from Colorado to New York were always highlights. She will be dearly missed.

If there walk angels on this planet, Cousin Carrie was surely one. Carrie's extraordinary gift for touching the souls of others--with her open and loving heart--was superseded only by her smile, a window to so much generosity and warmth. So much goodness in one person, so much friendship was her natural capacity. I was so very lucky to have her for a cousin, but luckier still to have her for a friend. I shall miss her evermore. Oh how I loved you, Carrie; thank you eternally for all that you did for me.
Always,
Cousin Teddy

Carrie was one of the most beautiful people I have ever had the luxury of knowing...beautiful inside and out! I'm going to miss my fellow 'Dem'... and our banter about all sorts of things. I know that you are in heaven where this is no more pain and that is the only comfort I get from you leaving this earth...knowing you are no longer in pain. Oh Carrie, you are sorely missed. I say to Steve and to the rest of Carrie's family, I am SO sorry for your terrible loss. Words can't describe my sadness.
Love and peace to you all. The world lost a truly beautiful & AMAZING woman.

Carrie was not only my cousin, but one of my dearest friends. She was a kind, creative person and she had a great sense of humor. I consider myself lucky to have had Carrie in my life.
These lyrics - from a Rory Gallagher song - sum it up best:
"My heart is heavy, as a sky full of rain...."
I miss you, Cousin!
Much Love Always,
Barbara

What a delight Carrie was -- we worked on the Board of Directors at Canyon Ranch for several years -- Steve - I am so sorry for your loss; you are in my thoughts and prayers.
