A great loss. John was a Howard Beach original and Icon. You always knew John was around by his happy laugh or his booming voice. You always had a wave from his very old, very new or very loud vehicles. A heart of gold and a gentle soul. Anyone that knew him has suffered a loss.

To the Hornung Family,
John was one of the kindest people I ever met. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and you will never find anyone who could say a bad word about him. His personality lit up the room. He was always willing to go the extra mile for others. His passing has evoked a great sense of loss for everyone whose life he touched even briefly, for that was how he affected people. Our most sincere condolences go to you, his family, thank you for sharing him with us.

I just found out about this great loss, mine and my families’ deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the Hornung family. John will be greatly missed; he was a true friend who never cast judgment or had a bad thing to say about anyone and always put a smile on your face and made you laugh. It didn’t matter how long I was away from HB every time I came back John seemed to find me and we picked up right where we left off, I will miss “Mugger” but will always be comforted by the fond memories of the good times we had.

Dear John,
I will never forget the times we had in the ski house. You always made us laugh until we cried. You and Maria taught me all of the "Irish" cooking tricks in the kitchen, but most of all you taught us all about "SPAM". I wanted to put a can in with you while you were sleeping, but Jamie wouldn't let me.
Just know that we will always cherish the memories and keep you near and dear to our heart..

I've known John for close to 45 years. It wasn't until about 20 years ago that I really got to know him. We rented a ski house up in the Catskills with a group of friends, of which John and his sister Maria were included. John and Maria were the funniest and most sincere people you'd wanna meet. John had a way of "lighting up" a room. His wit and humor would crack us up constantly. Once John was on to something that got a laugh- you had to hold on because you new he was gonna run with it- we had coughing fits from laughing so hard! One time he was outside chopping wood when he stopped, put the ax to his nose, took a whiff, then licked the blade. Now you have to try to picture this- he was dressed in a red checkered flannel shirt- big baggy insulated pants- a big flapping hat- boots and had a big red bushy beard. After the the lick he says- aw shucks- no gold. He was pretending to be Yukon Cornelius, the gold prospector from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. We were on the floor!!!
On the flip-side he had a heart of gold and was always there when you needed someone to talk to. He was the "complete package"-We will all miss him dearly.
I hope they like H-E-A-V-Y M-E-T-A-L in heaven.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hornung family

I'm sitting here at my computer for 15 minutes now and the RIGHT words just won't come to me. I came to the realization that there are no words to properly describe this one of a kind person.
It is the great fortune of each and every one of us that knew him to have experienced a flawless soul.
I have never heard a negative sentence role from this mans lips.
When we were kids in the school yard they called him "Face". Around high school time it changed to "Mugger". I always called him John.
A POSITIVE force in a negative world.
Thank you to the Hornung Family!

What can I say. Words just can't express how sorry I am over the loss of John (MUGGER) Hornung. It's a huge blow to a whole community. He was the Mayor of Howard Beach. I just can't imagine the neighborhood without him. It almost seemed like he was in three places at once, he was everywhere. He enjoyed making his rounds, meeting up with friends and making new ones. Most of us don't even know our next door neighbor, he took the time to get to know a little bit about everyone. One thing that comes to mind right away is all of the work he did for Toys 4 Tots. It was a charity close to his heart. The annual toy run just won't be the same anymore without him leading the way in his red Chevy pickup truck. We all are left with our memories and I am sure there will be stories told for many many years to come. We should all follow Mugger's lead and make our rounds more often, meet up with friends and try to make some new ones, cause life is just too short. Onward and Upward. With love, Kim

Im gonna miss seeing "mugga" either riding by on his bike or truck, or car, or whatever the hell he was driving that day! Every once in a while he'd stop in front of my place and we'd BS about stuff. He was helpful when i was asking him about bikes and he was always passing on some useful info to me whether it was about bikes or certain job opportunities that might be available. There wasnt a bad bone in "mugga's" body and i know i wont be the only one to miss him. He was a Howard Beach boy, thru and thru. Rest in peace Mugga, I'll miss ya.

Mr & Mrs Hornung,
I write you this note with a saddened heart. When I heard
the news about John I was shocked. I am sorry that I cannot be there "in body", but believe me when I tell you that I am there "in spirit". I can count my "good friends" on one hand and John was one of those good friends. I always looked forward to seeing him when I got home off my ship and Howard Beach will not be the same for me without him around. On a positive note, I know that he is now in heaven, kicked back and having a cold beer with my Dad, who treated him as a son of his own. John will be sorely missed, not only by me, but by everyone who knew him. There wasn't a person on earth who met him that didn't like him. He had no enemies, only friends and I am proud to say that I was one of his good friends. My sincere condolences to you and your family.
