I am a graduate of Baruch College, class of 1970. Certain economics classes were required for my BBA degree and that is where I encountered Professor Benewitz. He is definitely the most memorable of my professors at Baruch. Professor Benewitz continually demonstrated his brilliance and mastery of the subject matter, which he presented with a contagious passion for the material and concepts, wit and charm. The curriculum for the courses he taught was not easy and his expectations for his students were high. Accordingly, Professor Benewitz was not known as an "easy" grader although he was certainly considered fair; his students received the grades they earned (whether high or low). While some students tried to arrange their schedules for an "easier" economics professor, I decided to minor in economics (majored in accounting) after ECO 101 with Professor Benewitz. I always organized my schedule to register only for his economics courses even though I knew they were going to be more intense. Professor Benewitz thrived on the interplay with his students, especially when they challenged the ideas and concepts being presented. It was the most invigorating educational experience I had at Baruch. I was sorry to learn of his passing in Newsday.

For many years, Arbitrator Benewitz presided over arbitrations where I was the court reporter. He was a unique, passionate and funny man who loved to keep a phatom score card when someone said something brillant to counter his humor. His playnessful made otherwise boring proceedings bearable. Complicated and simple all at the same time. Rest in peace and I hope there is plenty of music playing for you. Anita Tencer Shemin
